Title: claimer treestand
Post by: bigb2004 on Oct 18, 2010, 03:19:13 PM
I'm looking in to getting a claiming treestand. I tryed an API that was first stand I claimed with, it felt good and safe but not a lot of room. Just looking to see what everyone else was using. I'm a bigger guy, 6'4" 305lb.

I perfer ladder stands, but I picked up a used Summit climber, I like it but wouldn't want to use it every time out.

I've got a few ladders stands on private land but always have some state land I hunt and can't get a ladder in and other land that people don't want ladders stands but okay using claimers.

Last climber I used was eight years ago, took 18' shortcut to the ground :(,  one week in ICU two weeks in regular hospital bed.If you buy one wear your harness at all times, especially going up and down and make sure all pins, cables and attachment points are secure! Now  I primarily hunt from ladder stands or ground blinds and have made my only two bow kills using these methods however am seriously considering getting back on the horse that bucked me so to speak since climbers offer so much more versatility and opportunity. let us know what you decide and how you make out.

I personally dont like them, yes there is a time and a place where they are invaluble but most of the time they are just a pain, having said that I do own one and do use it when the oppurtunity is rght and I LOVE the fact that on the summits the have those foot stirrup thigs so you dont hafta use straps on your toes and bungees on your heels and all that junk. Summits are rugged as heck too for a big guy like you. Im 5'8 175 lbs. so the whole durability thing is not so much an issue.

Sorry to hear that doorguy. How did you fall? If You don't mine me asking. And what kind of claimer were you using?

Aquaassassin. I'm not looking to use it all the time, Just When Its useful. Those straps were one thinking I didn't like about the API. But I liked how the spikes want in the tree. Dose the bigger ones on summits dig in as good?

my API definatley dug better then my summit climber, but overall I like the summits a lot better, the API did have a nice shrink wrapped chain to as opposed to the summit with the rubber. The API I sold had very sharp huge teeth on it and my summit is far from that but holds great, doesnt pretty much kill the tree like the API too.

I know with the chain on the API you can fit any tree with very little problem to keep level. How dose the summit with the cable fit the trees?

cable works fine just cant get it quite as fine tuned the spacing is further apart than on the api chain

If you get one MAKE SURE to attach the top and bottom with a rope or something similar. They might even come with something now, but mine didn't and the bottom slid 25 feet down the tree on me once. Fortunately it was one of the 6 times someone has ever been deer hunting with me. Make sure you check the weight restriction too. I think mine was only up to 300 lbs and being 305, that could be a concern.

I am a summit man myself. I own the open shot and viper model with no complaints. I had purchased a API grand slam climber new in the box but never used it. Long story makes me angry just thinking about it.

They don't interfere with the bow at all?

Neither one of the Summits do and I have a 12 inch B-stinger stabilizer on my bow. Of those two you would think the Viper would be a problem and surprisingly its not. Not to sure about the API never had a chance to descend from the ground in it. ::)

Little inside bad blood droberts?  Thanks for the info. Does anyone have anything bad to say about any of the summits?

Like I said earlier, I have the viper and I also have the bushmaster (which is the early version of the openshot). They are both excellent stands. I have had the bushmaster for 12 years and it is still going strong. I also thought for a while that the front bar on the viper would be a problem with the bow. It absolutley is not. Cheeks out!!! 8)

Thanks cheeks. I'm thinking more going with summit just from what I'm hearing from people and the additional accessories you cannot buy and it seems like you can find replacement parts easily.

6-4 360lbs have a Summit Goliath, it's a great stand and there is no issue for durability for me I've had it for 3 years and it still holds my fat a**.

I have plenty of room, seat is most comfortable seat I've ever hunted out of. Have actually fallen asleep at 25 feet. I also have a hunters saftey vest, don't know if they still sell the 3x/4x but you have to special order it from hunters saftey systems over the phone. I feel very safe with this combo. I could also do a jig on the platform and don't feel cramped inside the shooting rail. I guess the titan is even bigger but I'm happy with what I have.

I love the comfort of a the tree lounge. http://www.treelounge.com/ (http://www.treelounge.com/)  I think hands down they are great.  I have tried several others and some have good points and bad points.  I personally prefer a ladder stand and have several.  It does not matter what stand you use, caution is the key.  I was taking down a ladder stand a few years ago and had a bad experience.  I had unstrapped the top and was proceeding down the ladder, when the stand sprung away from the tree and we both went backwards.  We had a bad wind storm and the tree stand was bound into the tree.  I never realize it until it was to late.  There I laid on the forest floor with 2 crushed Vertebrae.  I had no cell phone service and I never told my wife what I was doing that day.  I sucked it up and walked over one mile to my truck. Walking across the plowed field was the worse.  Then I drove my self to the hospital.  No deer that year for me.  The next year I climbed back in the tree stand and shot 1 buck and 3 does opening day and another buck a week later.  And yes I had tags for all of them.

summit goliath.  worth every penny.  there are lighter and more compact stands out there, but if you have an idea of where you are going and plan on sitting for a while, buy the goliath.  I can go on forever about this stand, but the comfort allows me to sit longer and see more deer.  i also have a lone wolf climber that is lighter and more compact which I use to find new areas that I am not as familiar with.  lone wolf is nice....nice and expensive and doesn't hold a candle to summit.

Well my new stand came yesterday, 3 days early. Unfortunately I had to work late and didn't get home till late and didn't even take time to open the box. Will say its a big box. Hoping to get home normal time tonight an maybe claim a tree or two. Can't wait to get hunting this weekend.

why not? Ladders are as easy as it gets.

I put a buddy stand up alone, that was fun. Had to throw a rope over a limb and use that to hoist a block and tackle to get the stand up and then maneuver it by hand. Comparatively speaking, ladders are pretty easy to do alone, have used a rope to get them up, no block and tackle needed.

I have had some close calls putting up ladder stands by myself.   They are not totally secure until you cinch the top strap tight.  Those preliminary straps and the little bar that goes to the tree part way up are useless when the leverage of a 270lb pusgut is applied to the top steps.  Fortunately I have never got hurt but since my last close call I have made it a point to always have someone help out when installing or moving ladder stands.  There is no cell phone service out on my land so if I ever fell I could lay there for days until someone found me.  Also regarding climbers, I just gave away my summit viper.  I never felt safe ascending or descending with it.  I am in my mid-fifties and rather large and I just don't have the agility necessary to use a climber.  My favorite stands now are of my own design.  I have several of them on my property and on our lease.  They are ladder stands made out of pressure treated lumber with a 32" square platform, a nice bench seat and hip high guardrail that is great for leaning against for a bow shot or makes a great gun rest for rifle.  These definitely take at least 2 men to put up and take down safely but they are really nice to hunt out of.

I use a older climber that lets you face the tree sitting. It has served me very well. The climber has all my weight on the end away from the tree base. So I do not worry about stepping to close to the tree trunk. That's when you loose stand grip. Also it allows me to use the tree I'm in to be used between the animal and myself. Great for drawing my bow when the deer is behind it or using the tree for a steady rest for the rifle shots. I believe Summit also makes a newer version of the one I own. ;)

I've took one stand down myself.  Not doing that again. I have got to clam anything with this yet. Hoping to get out after work. The old lady was pissed I got it. Only because she was getting me one for my birthday the 6th of December.  O well I told her she could go buy me the muzzleloader I've been wanting.
