New to area
« on: Sep 03, 2007, 06:40:14 AM »
Hi~
Just moved to the saratoga area from washington state and i have been studying up on turkey hunting since i got into town.
I am quickly learning that my biggest problem seems to be finding a place to go and scout since i don't know any farmers up here.   Does anyone on here know anything about Carter's pond or Parcel 45 WMA's?
and in general (not just turkey) what is the hunting pressure situation like here in New York?

thanks,
Nick in Saratoga Spgs.

I went through the same situation a few years ago.  I had some luck knocking on doors not too far from Saratoga.

I hunt deer in the Adirondacks and never have an issue with pressure on public land.  I have no knowledge of other areas of the state during deer season because I have fallen in love with the Adirondacks.  Plenty of turkeys up there too, just have to put in the time scouting.

Nick,
I would try asking different farmers in your area. Lots of gobblers hang out in farm fields. They are gorging themselves on grasshoppers and crickets this time of year.
Tresspassing on my land is bad, Tresspassing on my land with an ATV will get you shot!

Nick there is plenty of low pressure state land within an hour of you. Check the NYSDEC website.

I have never hunted Carter's Pond but I have done well at the Wildlife Management Areas in other places (not always in Saratoga County).  If you are into waterfowl a lot of people hunt fish creek, which is a part of saratoga lake.

If you want spots close to Saratoga I recommend heading out West 15+ miles.  I had good luck out there knocking on doors.  I was only asking to hunt small game, a lot of farmers are happy to give access.  Some of them may want you to come shoot groundhogs over the summer, which can cause some serious damage to their tractors.

I would give some names and numbers, but I stopped hunting out there and lost contact.  I just dressed respectably and knocked on some doors, offering some free labor in exchange for hunting access.  It wasn't too hard to find good land to hunt.  Many farmers didn't care about the free labor, they just wanted to know who was going to be on their land.

I have also done very well in the Southern and Central regions of the Adirondacks, although it did take 1-2 years to find some of the more productive areas on tracts of public land.

I great up in eastern PA and I have found the hunting opportunities to be much better here in NY.
