The search for State Land trout!
« on: Apr 21, 2012, 11:36:22 AM »
I've always liked trout, and I have read up on what's stocked where on the DEC website.

I've hunted around Bennett lake last year, and thought this piece of state land up in the Wilcox area very promising. Last week, I took another stroll up there, and walked all the way around Bennett, and actually found a lot of deer sign, (piles of poopy, tracks in the marshy areas, ect.) Brought some fishing poles, and tried a few casts from the shore, and was snagged a LOT. Lost 4 $3-$5 lures pretty damn quick. Saw a coot diving for some fish. Pretty neat.

I also found that Middle Lake and and Murphy Lake are pretty well stocked from the DEC website, but the catch 22 of state land being that the fishing from the shore is so darn difficult (snags, shallow, etc.) and you can't ride a 4-wheeler in, because it would probably be a long 1-2 day affair hiking in to get as far as Murphy.... and it's too damn tough to get some kinda boat in there. (I've only made it in as far as Middle Lake during hunting season on foot) By the time I had walked all around Bennett, I had found myself EXHAUSTED, and even took a nap near a felled tree near the shoreline by the rocks. I had even found a set of benches and a fireplace on the eastern side of the lake, and it seemed like a cool hangout for whoever set it up.

The tributaries closer to Northville aren't fishable right now, mostly because you're not allowed to until the first Saturday of May, PLUS the water level is so darn low.

It's all about trout for me right now, and I've yet to get anything. Hopefully I'll find a good spot sometime soon. I'll tell ya, it's a lot easier carrying in two fishing poles than a gun after a couple miles!

There are plenty of creeks around fulton county that provide good trout fishing.  Also, I know people that pack in inflatable kayaks/rafts and a battery air pump to some of those remote ponds. You might want to try that.

Those places are tailor-made for a float tube and foot pump.

Just started looking at them today. :) The Seyvlor Fish Hunter is what I'm looking at and I'm about to pull the trigger.

That certainly is a good catch. Some of these smaller lakes are stocked pretty well, from my understanding. I think I'd like an honest shot at these places using the boats. My old man is the fisherman, but is disabled now, and wasn't much a trout fisherman. He knew a lot of good spots for Walleye and stuff.

I figured with this boat (which should be arriving in the mail tomorrow) it will accomodate my fishing and waterfowling activities!
