Time to think about Lee bullet casting molds.
« on: Aug 20, 2011, 08:22:23 PM »
The .45 cal black powder rifles and bullets are getting harder and harder to find.  Each year I notice less offerings for the caliber than the last.
This is a shame..  The .45 carbine is an excellent choice to introduce young hunters to the sport of muzzleloading.
I like my daughters .45 carbine so much, I was thinking of getting myself a CVA in .45.
However, finding bullets is getting tougher.  It just may be time to get some molds.  I wouldn't think the molds will disappear as there are still a number of .45-70 do-it-youselfers.
Who else enjoys shooting/hunting with a .45 smoke pole?

Ive got a CVA optima pro mag .45 cal muzzle loader. I think it was on sale because it was a .45 cal. It shoots real nice for the little ive shot it. Its kind of heavy with the long barrel and thumbhole but the recoil is pretty light. I have only shot sabots out of it. The ones that i have shot i got a cabelas. Stores may not have any bullets, but cabelas will have something you can order.

I found this Chuck Hawks take on the Powerbelt bullets.
http://www.chuckhawks.com/powerbelt_bullets.htm

I am aware of the negative feedback from hunters.  I load them in my kids muzzleloaders because the .45 is using 75gr(one 50gr and one 50gr snapped in 1/2) of pellets and the .50 is using 80grs (one 50gr and one 30gr).  So, velocities should be down enough to allow proper expansion..  I say, "Should be!"  Haven't had a chance to see real world performance yet.  And I've not been able to find MZ Expanders in any of my local shops.

I have shot TC sabots, Buffulo Sabots, and Hornady xtp sabots out of the .45.  Nothing shoots as well for us on paper as the PowerBelts.
The .45 cal Hornady XTP sabots are actually a .357 bullet in a special sabot, not a .40 cal..  They came with a 58 gr XTP hollow point.  When my daughter was real little, this Hornady XTP with two 30gr bp pellets had non existent recoil.

The kids are now quite capable at shooting bullet/powder combinations that a quite more capable.
