Pikeguys first buck in too long
« on: Nov 21, 2005, 10:21:56 AM »
Well, I finally managed to tag a decent buck this year for the first time since 1998. He's not real wide, but his mass & symmetry make up for that I guess. It was some quick shooting as I had to spin around and shoot him from 15 feet on the first shot. He came from my right and directly behind me so it was close quarters. When I spun he saw me and went straight away and I finally got a good shot at 30 yards when he turned up the hill. He did a nosedive straight down into a 12-15 foot deep ravine and buried half his rack in the ground. It was pretty exciting actually. I also got a really nice doe about an hour before that but I guess I never got a good picture of her. My brother shot two basket racks which were his first bucks ever in 7 years, and the only deer he's seen in the last 3 years.

Total for the day for my brother and I

Thanks shrub, I sure did ;) He's about half as big as the one I grazed at daylight though.

There was snow on the hillside that I was hunting untill about 10:30 a.m. on opening day. It melted pretty fast when the temp crept up into the mid 30's. I'm glad I didn't need to track this one without the snow. He only went about 10 yards :)

What does everyone here think about European mounts? How much do they cost in your area?

European skull mounts are great!!!
You can buy a kit and  do it yourself ( it is not that hard) or I could send you some chemicals.
I have done 5 so far this year, I will post some picture soon

Here's a picture of the buck a friend of mine shot this past Saturday. He says it was way smaller than the one it was running with too!

PikeGuy,
Nice buck you got there.  It seems like the smaller buck in the picture has the same genetics as the bigger guy (in terms of overall rack shape, mass etc.)...I wonder if they are father and son?  Again, nice buck!

Thanks. They do look alike, however, they were taken about 20 miles apart. I'm thinkin that might be a little far. ;)
