Have also seen a few guys with the 3 and bigger magnum loads that couldn't pattern....They flinched so bad at the shot they couldn't hit the back board.... 8) 8)

I'm sure there was a pattern there with the chokes.....And I hear how you mount the gun will affect your shots as well.....wise ole wizard told me that... :P

Pretty sure Remmington made the H&R extra full on my 10ga too, seems to pattern pretty well. I had it getting 5-6 #5's minimum in a neck at 75yds when I tried a bunch of loads the year I got it. I'm good at 40yds with any of the loads I bought then so I bring the lesser ones early in the season. 40 yds is a pretty long shot IMO, best part of turkey hunting is getting them close while sitting fairly exposed.

Think if I try 3 1/2s it will pattern better or worse at 40

More isn't always better but like bog said, you don't know until you try. If you're looking to only shoot as far as 40yds, I'd go with 5's or 6's. The 6's might be loosing some energy at 40, I'd test them in a phone book or something if you go that route.

That gun is capable of the 50 yd shot....just need to find what she likes to do it. Have you tried 3 1/2's at all?

Just picked up a new 870. Patterned it today with a hastings .650 choke with winchester 3.5"  2 1/4 in 6s. 167 hits at 40 yds in a ten inch circle. Got a 145 hits with the same shell and a remington straight rifled super full choke.   Deep cleaned the barrel to the point it shines first with hoppes #9. Hope this helps.
