Finally (buck #2)
« on: Dec 20, 2021, 10:10:57 PM »
Been a grind for me this season. Seemed like every time I zigged the buck I was after zagged. I hunted this buck during the rut several times but never could run into him. Finally the last week or so he’s shown up a couple times during daylight in the food plots. With the cooler temps today I went in and 45 mins before dark he came out and I hit him high shoulder and dropped him where he stood. Few mins later I had a doe come into range and shot her as well.

Been really happy with the Barnes expanders I’ve been shooting. 6 deer with them the last two years and great blood trails on the ones I’ve had to track.

I might try them out of my shotgun have been shooting the hornady sst and have had good results with them.

Shot a pile of deer with them shotgunning when Federal offered them in there sabots, then the disappeared/discontinued so I went to Remington Accu-tips. Killed a ton with those too and they were just as deadly. Then those dried up around here but Remington started offering the Barnes expander so I jumped on those. Now I’ll ride those until they are gone and hope another manufacturer does something with them.

I haven’t taken any animals with the Hornady sst out of a shotgun but my Ithaca loves them on paper. I have taken a few with SST’s via .308

Been a great week. Yesterday I went into check a camera and noticed a few fresh scrapes coming out of the swamp. Had pictures of this buck Tuesday night right at dark and one Thursday morning at 7. So I sat hoping he might show up again. Ended up seeing 5 bucks including this one. Must have been a doe or doe fawn that came into heat as his glands were jet black and smelled like he had been scrapping a bunch recently.
