hey guys just wanted to hear some thoughts on dogs for upland. mostly woodcock grouse and pheasent currently planning on a new brittany in the next week. also any tips on training and how soon is to soon for there first hunting trip.

I just picked up my new Boykin Spaniel. I'm holding off on making the call about hunting this fall until I see how training is going. You don't want to hunt if the dog doesn't have the technique yet. They tend to develop bad habits that way. Right now my pup goes nuts when she smells feathers, so I need to make sure I can keep her under control before going out in the duck blind or else I may be chasing her around the marsh all day!
She heard her first gunshot by accident on the way home from the breeder. Luckly it only startled her, scared me. Wasn't expecting someone to be shooting right next to a main road, picnic area!

guys i got my dog and she is great. been pointing wings and scent trailing even retrieving all at 4 months old. i only have one problem she likes to chase after and smell deer any tips on breaking that.

Electric collar that you can give her a mild zap when she starts after deer.

you might think i'm nuts but put a deer hinde in a barrel thow in the dog leave the dog in for a few then roll him around the yard

ALWAYS TRAIN WITH A CHECK CORD OF ABOUT 15 -20' TO CORRECT THE DOG . IF YOU DO NOT CORRECT THE DOG QUICKLY THEY WILL NOT ASSSOCIATE THE CORRECTION TO THE COMMAND. ITS HARD TO START TRAINING BUT IT MUST BE DONE CORRECTLY FROM THE START OR YOU WILL HAVE MORE PROBLEMS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. I HAVE A GERMAN SHORTHAIR THAT WILL BE SIX ON OCT. 6TH. I DID NOT START HIM FULLY HUNTING UNTIL THE FOLLOWING SEASON BUT I BROUGHT HIM TO THE FIELDS AT 10 WEEKS. DON'T SHOOT OVER IT UNTIL HE'S AT LEAST 10- 12 WEEKS AND USE A CAP GUN OR A STARTER PISTOL SO THAT YOU DON'T RUIN THE DOG AND MAKE IT GUN SHY.TRY USING A FROZEN WING ON A STICK AND A STRING JUST DON'T LET THE DOG CATCH IT , OR HIDE THE WINGIN THE GRASS OR BRUSH AND LET IT COME UP TO IT AND WHOA THE DOG AND PRAISE IT .

I just joined 20 minutes ago and this is my first post. I have a GSP and this will be his second season. I have a lot of deer that hang around the house and my dog will not allow them in the yard on his watch and that is his job. Out in the field he is all business hunting for birds. I have a collar and did use it once when he was right on the tail of a deer, down in the field. On small zap cured him from chasing deer anywhere but out of the yard. I call the collar "The Good Dog Collar" because whenever he has it on he's a real good dog. Don't over use it, the tone button is what I use and always hit the tone button before you zap. You'll be surprised that you'll only use the tone button after once or twice zapping. I used the control measure button also because I think the boost button should be used only in the last resorts. My 2ct.

Nice looking pup you got there . Sure bet he loves the water ;D

Thank you. Everyone thinks he is a black lab, kinda funny. As far as swimming. We are just starting to get him in the water. Loves the boat though.

Nice looking dog. Is he a cross or pure lab?

He is not a cross nor a lab. He is 100% German shorthaired pointer.
This is him at now at 4 yrs old. He is 90lbs pure muscle and my champion hunter.
