I would say that most of the hunting is done on public ground. The farther west you get in the state the more there is. I personally don't hunt much on the eastern side of the state so I really cannot answer about how it is but.........I do know there is what Montana calls Block Management Areas which are private lands that are open to the public and the State Fish and Game pays the Land owner $/hunter. If you are planning a trip to Montana maybe post about a certain area?
There are quite a few pics posted here of animals taken unless you want to get more specific. It is pretty common with a some effort to score on a 16-18" wide 4x4.
