I like it!

I am going to try to get out one night this week.

Trail cams are fairly quiet. I am not going to hit it too hard until around Halloween.

My cameras have had more buck activity than usual. Usually a bunch of bucks in velvet then they usually stop getting their picture taken after the velvet is off. Not the case this year though. I sat for few hours in the evening on the October 1st southern tier opener. Saw one doe at 20 yards.

Been watching the doe behind the house, 3-9 of them all day long.  Lazy things just lay in the plot n get up to feed every once in awhile, then lay back down.

I hunted the cold front last Thursday evening (October 4th). Sat over a green alfalfa field. I saw 6 bucks and 2 does. 2 of the bucks were shooters but didn’t get close enough. Almost all of the bucks that came into the field checked the does and I was treated to watching a small 5 point sparring with a small 6 point. It was an exciting hunt especially for my second sit of the season.

Awful quiet here!

Hunted yesterday morning with the bow. Saw 1 doe and 2 bucks, 1 was a small half rack, the other was a decent shooter 8 point with no browtimes. Nothing close enough to shoot. No sign of any rut action yet.

Just got back from spending a few days at my buddy’s hunting camp down by Watkins Glen. There were 4 of us down there and only one doe seen from the tree stand between us. Saw quite a few scrapes and rubs down there. Before I left for camp I did a little rifle hunting in the northern tier. Didn’t see much. Just a few does and a spike. I’ll be hitting it hard with the bow the next couple weeks

I sat the evening watch with my bow yesterday afternoon. Had an 8 pointer come in and make a scrape 60 yards away. As he started walking away I tried throwing a call his way but he ignored it. On my way out I stalked up on a small 6 pointer and had him broadside at 15 yards. Didn’t shoot. It was his lucky day. This wind today should get rid of some of these leaves! I’ll be sitting all day tomorrow. Should be a good day to be out

Snuck up on 4 doe and a fawn yesterday, they were all bedded down because of wind and rain. I sat down and waited to see if the buck would show. I was watching through my binos,  and no headgear. After about an hour they all got up and started walking away. I should have sat tight for another 10 minutes after they left because he was bedded down 40 yards down the hill from them. I found this out as I started to follow them. Up and away he went presenting no shot. I did not push on him, I just backed out as I'm on vacation Thanksgiving week and don't want him leaving the area. 8 deer total yesterday. Good 2nd day other than the weather sucked.

Wasn't very motivated to hunt in NY this year, except for bears as I want to get one with my recurve. Started out in mid September for early bear for the first time ever. Ended up seeing 5 bears, mostly sows with cubs up in the oaks, so no shooting for me, plus saw a really nice 8 pointer up feeding on acorns in the afternoon at 50 yds, never saw me. Then archery opened and I saw 4 more bears, had a good sized one feeding in a white oak and snuck up to 15 yds of the tree as it was coming down, then is spotted me. It came down but went around the back of the tree snapping it's jaw. I then spotted her two cubs about 50 yds away and knew why; glad I didn't get a shot before I saw them.

Also want to get a deer stillhunting with my bow, so I didn't spend much time in a tree. During muzzleloader week I had a doe at 20yds but passed, then had a decent 6 pointer up feeding on acorns about 50yds away. He was moving away and I tried to get closer but he finally spot me and took off, it was pretty open there from logging.

Good luck everyone.

I bow hunted this morning. Ended up seeing 3 small bucks and 3 doe. I watched 1 doe for quite while. She eventually got to 20 yards and I shot her. She only went about 40 yards before expiring.

Bow hunted all day yesterday. I had deer around me most of the day. 10 bucks and at least 10 does and fawns. Passed on a spike and came to full draw on a decent 6 pt. Not a great shot so I passed. Some grunting and chasing. The kind of day that I wait all year for.

I hope to get back out Thursday. It’s going to be in the teens that morning, brrrrrrrrr.

Nice work fellas. I am seeing a lot of quality bucks being harvested this year including my father's. Not sure if you areas are managed for trophy bucks but where we are (RI) big bucks are very rare. We do get big big bodied deer but racks are less than impressive. With that said my dads buck this season and my 3 bucks last season have been the biggest we have seen in 30 years. Something is working.

Thanks guys! It’s been a pretty good year for me so far. My wife and I finally bought a house with a little bit of property which we have wanted for a long time. It’s only 10 acres but with the neighboring properties and the creek that runs through it we have seen a ton of deer. 7 or 8 different ones on camera and saw 2 new ones last night that have good potential for next year. It was definitely something special being about to take my biggest deer on my own land

Thanks guys. Stay after them.

Anybody have any recommendations on a good muzzleloader?

Thompson Center, CVA, all great guns. My best advice would be to go to a shop and see what fits you best and feels the most comfortable. They are all capable of poking out to 150 yards plus depending on how comfortable you are. Also, are you stand hunting or ground hunting? If from a stand you may want to consider a 26" barrel for the extra distance as well as a scope. If you are stalking a 24" may be the better choice to save you on weight and mobility.

I will definitely be stand hunting and still hunting. Good info. Thanks.

Just bought a lhr redemption. Havent been made since TC bought them out n changed the name to TC Strike.  Got one for 300$ n 50$ to ship. Things pretty slick.
Match trigger, green mountain barrel, corrosion coating on both inside and out.  Silent safety.  They prolly have a few more if interested. They went for 600$

Wow, what a week!! I started my Vacation last Friday. With all good intentions of being on my stand all day as usual. I was up at 4: 00am and in the shower then the prep. Lunch, thermos of coffee ( the key to sitting all day in the cold is warm liquid) other than that, it's scents and all my clothes.
My pack weighs about 40 +lbs on my back but it's mostly clothes. My stand is approximately 3/4 mile up hill all the way from my house. I wear the bare minimum on the way up. Thermal long johns and pants, Polly top and a tshirt. Never fails with 40+ pounds strapped to your back and at some points 45 degree inclines your gonna sweat. I leave early in the morning to assure I'm in my stand at first light. That's after I get dressed. Layer after layer in order to stay warm for the day. Those snow/ rain days I even packed a rain coat to wear under my camo hunting jacket to stay dry.
There are the days when the weather is so crappy, you know deep down They are bedded down. Those days I'll only sit till 10:00am then hike up the upper side of the ledges and over to another ridge cap.
This treck if worked slow takes me approximately 2hrs. That lands me at that new spot for 12::00 and a good sit for the afternoon. Then I get the short trip home, now being within 1/4 mile from the house. The first Friday Im thinking it was an all day sit at the stand. A doe and yearling came in at 4:00 and I could have sworn a 3rd 10 minutes later, but seemed to vanish( as so many do ) into thin air.
Saturday I saw zip
Monday weather was crap, so it's sit till 10, still hunt 2 hrs then sit afternoon.
First two deer show up at 8am foraging and moving slow. A 3rd deer up higher making noise, but can not see. It ends up snorting at me and bounds.
10:00 rolls around time to move. I did not get 100yards from my stand. A doe that had bedded down stood up snorted and bound. About 1.5 hrs into the track, I run into a doe, as I freeze and watch her I catch the movement of an ear. Another deer that was bedded down in front of her. No antlers on anything yet. The standing doe plays head  dodge and stamp the foot with me trying to get me to move. I stand my ground not twitching a bit. She heads off down the hill leaving the other deer bedded there. I thought that was strange she had walked off and just left that other deer laying there. 4 to 5 minutes goes by and I hear the one who walked off blow/ snort. That must have been the let's go call from Mom, because not just the one but two others got up. Again no bone!!
After they clear out, I make my way to the final sitting spot for the rest of the day. At 2:00 Two more doe came by. I left this spot just prior to the end of the shooting hour just in case and caught 3 more in the skidder trail by the landing.
Tues was more of the same 6 deer seen, no Bone. Wed. Same MO. 6 more.no bone and no chasers?? I'm starting to wonder now. It's to the point as I explained to the wife..they think I'm family. They have gone every place I have. Even to the crotch of the two trees at my 2nd location to sniff where I sat. Now mind you it's no easy task to get in this spot with ledge and steep terrain. But one made the venture just the same. They followed me home on Tues night coming 10 from my back door( this had never happened before) Then Wed. I followed them home as once again they went through my yard just in front of me. I had text my wife and told her to watch for them. By the time I got to the door, my wife was wispering and pointing. They were rite there!! So I'm at the point to where I've seen a lot of deer and no bone!! Is there no more bone left? I can tell by the tracks there is!! Time for the curve ball. First thing this morning I hike to spot #2 First. Plan on doing in reverse. So will move to stand 1 at 10 and walk by it to go home for Thanksgiving dinner.
At 6:30am this morning it was cold. Burrr! Wondering if I'll make it till 10. Thank God for coffee. At 8:00 am ( know this from the church bells in town) 4 doe and a yearling come skipping down and take a path towards where my bow stand is in Oct. I told myself it's the perfect set up. He'll be here in 10. Well it took 15 minutes for yet another doe to prance down the trail. Her pace was up a bit and I thought it's one of two things. 1 she's being chased or 2 she's playing catch up because she had a nice sunny spot and didn't want to get up. So I waited. ... thinking like a buck would,  I'd come into these doe from another vantage point. Bingo!! At 8:45 He came down the ridge from my right, not the left like the doe's had. Thought I missed him at first. No hair, bone or blood. Caught him just behind ribcage with exit  wound about 4" from right front shoulder. Took out 1 lobe of his liver an 1 lung. Only ran 60 yards and piled up. Happy Thanksgiving!

Got out this afternoon for evening watch. Bump 4 does on my way in then didn’t see anything for the next few hours. Then a buck I’ve been trying to cross paths with came through at 4:15. Ended up with a heart shot at 65 yards. He jumped and ran off and crashed 50 yards from where I shot him. Not a drop of blood at the spot where I shot him or on the track to where he lay!  What an awesome hunt and my biggest buck to date. Also had 4 buddies to help me get him out. Had to get him up a good sized ridge to get him out. Can’t thank them enough for there help!

I tried to get my mom out tonight but she decided to pass. So I snuck out to maybe fill my doe tag. Ended up seeing 2 doe and a fawn. A spike and a nice 6 point. The 6 seemed to be limping on his front left leg. He was getting along okay though and feeding like crazy.

I think I have her convinced to get back out there now.  ;)

I hunted Wednesday afternoon and this afternoon. Wednesday I headed out with the bow in hopes of sticking a doe. Had 3 does come in and circle just out of range. Took the shotgun with me this evening and ended up seeing 4 does on my way in to the stand. Then saw a doe and a 6 point. The 6 point was at 10 yards, but I can’t shoot a buck until late bow/muzzleloader starts next week.  He would have been tasty! He chased the doe around a little which was cool to see. She never gave me a shot. Figures I go out to try to get a doe and a buck shows up! No complaints though it was a good hunt.

I can almost smell it Dom!

I have been out the past 2 days with the smoke pole. Seeing some does and small bucks. The weather has been about as perfect as it could be. Cold enough to keep the snow but not bitter cold.

Here are a couple that made it. The time and date is wrong. 1 buck was the last week of NZ and the second was a few days after it closed. I don't think I had pics of either of these bucks until now. They will be beauties next year.
