The 2013 MHF Turkey Contest is underway, turkey seasons are open in some States; we will not have a signup this year. Instead the contest will be open to all MHF members, must have joined MHF before any State you plan on hunting for the contest opens; this is a simple way of keeping people from joining the site just to enter a nice tom and win.
I will make a separate thread for rules, and another for entries; use this thread for BS, congratulations, etc.
Prizes. In the past people have donated prizes and they were mailed, if the winner wanted them, wasn't always the case. We can still do this, or try something different, possibly for new/younger hunters that could use a few turkey hunting things. I am thinking of putting up a nice call to award to anyone that takes their first turkey with a bow, as an incentive to try it. Any other ideas?

I will be trying for my first bird with a bow!

Blackpowder inline shotgun and archery 8)
I use a blackpowder shotgun too thought i was the only one
-
I was thinking along the lines of a call: a Hooks Hootin' stick; more than one person and we'll have a drawing. I donate a charter to charity every year; can't afford to give them away too often, not getting rich doing it. ;)
If anyone wants to donate something else that would be great, maybe for beginner or youth hunters?
That's cool you guys are using BP shotguns, one chance. 8)

-
78.5 hours to go.poor turkeys have no idea whats about to happen ;D
-
Great job guy's ;D One more week here
-
Can't wait. Checked my spot yesterday 3 big toms strutting. Problem is they're henned up like crazy. Not gonna be easy but it'll be fun I'm sure
-
Should really be picking up with the warm weather, hens will start nesting soon; otherwise, hunt the hens.
-
Hoping so. Yesterday the 3 toms had 5+ hens with em. That flock is significantly smaller than it was a week ago when it was pushing 20 birds
-
Saw two toms strutting after a brush fire on Saturday. Only ones I've seen so far since the snow melted. They had four hens with them.
-
Get this...my cousin calls me tonight around 8 and says you're never gonna believe this. His mom calls him from his room and says there's a turkey next to my car in the driveway. So he goes to check it out, looks out the window and sees a giant Tom full strut beating up his mothers car!! :o He saw his reflection in the car and thought it was another Tom. The car is all scratched up. He went outside and spooked him down in the woods behind his house. He's taking his girlfriend back there in the morning to try and kill him. We'll see.
-
HAHAHAHAHAH Dumb/Smart birds I love it!
-
I know right! Wish he coulda got it on video
-
Entries are due by 9PM tonight for the contest if anyone is interested. ;D
-
It's to bad our attendance here is so low here nowadays. Would have been nice to see more participation. Never even weighed my jake, had a good beard for a jake though.
-
How long was it? I didn't weigh either jake I got in KS, forgot my scale. ???
Yeah, the contest never really took off. I started it up because drobs was unavailable.
-
Just shy of 5", maybe 5 pulled tight. It was 90* out and I was trying to get him cleaned up pretty quick. Forgot about checking the weight until I was working on taking the fan off, didn't bother at that point. Seemed fairly average for around here, probably 15-16lbs. Fan is in the freezer, still have to stake it to cardboard and salt it. Considering using this one to hunt with, but it'll most likely just get pinned up somewhere. I'm smoking another batch of venison tomorrow, so I'm going to try to smoke a breast and see how it comes out.
-
Smoked wild turkey sounds pretty good. 8)
-
That sure sounds like some good stuff Steve :P :P
-
In a brine now with sage, rosemary and thyme. We'll see what happens. Also have a batch of Heathers doe in a very hot jerky brine to hit the smoker as well. I really like the smoked venison brined like jerky, especially with super sharp cheddar ;) .
-
I smoked one breast, not that good, too lean it is pretty dry, and that wa a cold smoke. I took the rest ground them up with applewood bacon, added feta cheese, roaster red peppers, kalamative olives, minced onion and garlic and made greek turkey burgers, that was the ticket ;)
-
I was planning to wrap the breasts in thick cut bacon and then only hot smoking (~200f) until it reaches the 165f internal temp. I'll see what happens, it'll get eaten some how whatever the result is.
-
They all sound good...
-
If you have a injector, you can use that to add moisture and flavor. One of the best things I have made from wild turkey is a turkey salad for wraps. Like a tuna salad....or chicken...with mayo and all the vegies added it is good. Run small chunks thru the food processor....Then celery, red and green peppers or anything you like and add mayo and mix. Put on a wrap with some grated parm cheese.....
Other than that I cut the breast into strips and soak in balsamic vinegar and coat with italian bread crumbs, then deep fry.
-
The turkey salad wrap sounds really good upstate I'm going to have to test that out with the other breast I have left
-
Slow cooked in the crock pot works well for the initial cooking....add some chicken broth and some noodles and two meals out of the breast... ;D
-
The wife usually makes a white turkey chilli. Its really good. she uses one breast for a chilli so we get two out of a bird.
-
I usually just marinate mine in Italian dressing an grill but I'm thinking I need to explain my horizons here from what y'all are mentioning
