Title: Shed hunting
Post by: Deadeyez on Feb 24, 2017, 04:30:32 PM
Got out yesterday and put a couple miles on my boots. What beautiful weather for February!  My buddy and I didn't find any shed antlers, but we did find some great deer sign. Anyone else been out lookin for sheds?

Had 8 deer in the yard the other day Bobby. They had another easy winter.

Picked up a set of spike shed a 4 and 5 point side this afternoon.  5 point was from last year, few chew marks but not bad.

Good deal! I'm excited for this next deer season. Got a bunch of hunting related stuff done this winter and also got a few loose ends tied up on the boat earlier than normal too. The lack of ice fishing was depressing to say the least. Had to keep busy so I didn't end up in a rubber room! 😜

Is there a certain type of area/cover/landscape a person should be concentrating on to find sheds?

Thanks

Depends where you live. If you live where the deer yard up in the winter you want to go check those areas out. If they don't I do the best in and around fields as well as thick bedding areas.

Figured I would dust this thread off since it’s that time of year. Yesterday I went out to pull a few cameras that were left up for some post season intel and figured I would do a little shed hunting while I was out. Ended up finding one side to an 8 pointer that I have quite a few pictures of. He should be a really nice deer this upcoming season.

Looking like good shed hunting conditions are here again. This rain has knocked the snowpack back down. I’ll be giving it a shot this upcoming week

My nephew has a German Shorthair that is finding quite a few. The only problem is, if you don't get it away from him right away, the dog will bury it. Still some work to do....h2l

Hey guys. Figured I would get this thread going again. Anyone been out lookin for fresh sheds? Work has been pretty busy this winter and between that and ice fishing I haven’t took a walk in the woods yet. We haven’t had the thaws like last year but there has been a time or 2 that the weather has been decent for shed hunting. I’ll keep everyone posted on my success at the end of this winter and early spring. Good luck guys

I took a walk this past Friday to take a look for sheds and do a bit of off season scouting. I didn’t end up finding any sheds but I did get pictures of 7 bucks on trail camera. They all had antlers still except one had dropped both and another had dropped one side. This was in late February. I also picked up a tick 😡 I woke up Saturday morning and noticed it on my lower back around my waistband area.

I just started doing it this year, and have more so just been going for a walk in the woods every weekend with my dad. The snow around me in NH has dropped a bit and yesterday we looked for a few hours in areas we had seen the bucks frequenting. Nothing yet, but it was still nice to get out in the woods.

My cousins dog found a few nice ones years ago, and we are going to try that area next weekend I think.

Switching gears from ice fishing to shed hunting. I’m gonna hit the woods and fields pretty hard. Heading to my bow hunting spot in the southern tier this weekend. Post on how your doing finding sheds on here guys. I know you guys up north might have few more weeks before the snow levels drop enough to get out and about. Good luck!

I've put some miles on in western Maine to no avail so far. Seeing lots of deer though. Starting to get discouraged seeing all the ones some have been getting. I'm a super patient person though and will be out while I can.

About 100% certain it's the other side of last years find. 8th mile separation. Glad it hadn't gotten chewed.

Yeah I hear you there. Not nearly the snow in the southern tier where my buddys farm is that I hunt compared to what is at my house and up your way. I usually focus my efforts down there until the freeze thaw starts up again by my place.

Sheds and chaga from last spring. I had never looked for sheds prior and was surprised to find that they really are out there if you spend some time.

Picked up my first shed of the year last Friday. Freshie still had blood on the pedicle.  Had pics of the buck with only the left side at 8am that morning. My buddy goes back and finds the left side the next day. Lucky for me I’ll get the match since I found the first side.
