Title: weird things found/seen while hunting
Post by: adkRoy on Oct 06, 2005, 10:32:45 AM
What are some of the weird things you have found or seen while hunting? I once found an intact toliet bowl with seat a good mile in the woods from the nearest road. Full cans of beer spaced out every 20 yards along a wood road (I figure some poor hunter did it to find his way home). Also one of the weirdest things I saw was a couple of years ago the yahoos that hunt on the land below our farm had a young kid put a deer drive on to them by playing his trumpet(not very well I might add) and walking along the hedge rows. He did manage to scare 5 does up onto our land.

my backtag which i had lost the week earlier.  I searched all through the thick stuff I was crawling through and couldn't find it.  went and bought a replacement and while walking through the open field to the thick stuff i found it lying on the ground.  I think the deer were playing a joke on me.

This doesn't completely apply, but last year on  opening day of duck season I pulled up on the first duck of the day and pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. I sat there all day while my buddies hunted and had fun and tried to fix my gun. Turned out the night before when I took it apart to clean it OUTSIDE IN THE LAWN, I sprayed Rem action cleaner through the trigger assembly and blew a trigger pin out. Well, after the hunt we went home to clean the birds and party so I went to work and got a big magnet from the tool room and started combing the yard, and actually found the pin in the grass. I was pretty pumped.

A year earlier I was hunting deer on opening day. I got a really nice doe, but when I went to tag her my whole backtag was gone. Not good. I was lucky enough to have my cell phone on me, so I called home and explained the situation to my mother who happened to be there. She asked what the tag looked like and when I told her she said "well, Lexi(my dog) was carrying something that looked just like that in the woods this morning on our walk" Good luck finding that right? Well, she took my dog through that patch of woods again telling her to "go get it" and "bring it to grandma" and all that crap. Sure enough, Lexi went off into the woods away from the trail and came back with my tag in her mouth. My mom had to drive it all the way out to the farm I was hunting, but I was pretty happy. I'm sure there are more, but those just popped into my head

Whats a Back Tag?
Title: Re: weird things found/seen while hunting
Post by: Pikeguy on Oct 06, 2005, 12:46:51 PM
LOL. I suppose some states don't require them. A backtag is exactly what it sounds like ;) Here in WI we are required to wear a tag on our back (for deer hunting only) with a number and all our personal information such as height, weight d.o.b. etc. Basically so if you do something stupid, and someone sees you, they can record your # and call you in to the DNR. It has to be visible at all times, so if you have to throw on another coat(or take one off) you're screwed and have to move your tag to that coat. :-\

If you ever loose one you are paranoid about loosing it again.  It just uses a big safety pin to attach and can get snagged on branches and wire and come off without you even knowing.  I find myself always checking to see if I have it on.

Another weird thing I saw. I watched a flock of turkeys come into a cut cornfield last fall and start beating up and fighting the flock of canadian geese that were in there feeding. I never knew turkeys could be so vicious. They drove the flock of geese out of the field.

I once found an old car in the middle of the woods, about a mile from any road.
I have no idea how or when it got there...

i was out in the middle of nowhere hunting and i found this ewok village. it was like a kids fort but had walkways going from hut to hut, stick roofs the whole nine. you knew teenagers built it but it haddent been used in years. it was just weird though it was about 3 miles from any road? along way to travel for kids to party or whatever they were doing there?

im still waiting to find that lost playboy bunny out in the middle of the woods ;D

That ewok village sounds pretty cool, I have to laugh, it just sounds so fake/and real.  It sounds like something I wanted to create in the woods when I was a kid.  Pikeguy where in WI are you from.  I hate back tags too.  they are pointless really.  just another way to get a fine, as if someone will remember a huge number like that anyway.  Anyways, I just hate watching those alien movies, like signs and stuff, just before I go coon hunting or something in the dark, walking in cornfields at night and stuff, it just bugs me, and then you get that your being followed feeling.  I am fine at night, I just don't like watching a movie right before I go out.  I am planning on scaring my coon hunting buddies by recording the alien language on the movie signs, kneeling down and losing them in the corn field and playing it on a tape recorder some night when we are hunting in a corn field.  I can't wait to try it.

I have lost my backtag twice, but here in NY they replace it for free. No big deal.
You have to wear it when hunting any game.
When I'm fishing very popular spots (like elbow to elbow salmon fishing) I'll wear it, too.
It probably prevents some hassles...

I was walking in from turkey hunting saturday and I saw a deer standing about 40 yards out.  I was in full camo but it was looking right at me.  I was in the middle of a pasture so no place to hide to watch it.  I started to just walk off and it walked after me.  I stopped again and it walked in to about 10 yards from me.  If someone saw me from the road it would have been a wierd site.  It had 7 points and was a good deer for around here.  It eventually walked off and made me feel real good about my camo.  It also had a huge clump of burdocks stuck between its eyes.

More weird things found while hunting: Balloons with a index card tied to the bottom with a name and partial address because the ink ran. A wooden out house 2 miles in the deep woods not near a trail or road. No evidence of a camp near by.  A cow's skull on top a boulder in the Adirondacks by a cut in a cliff where steps were carved into the rock which led to a natural amplitheater out in the middle of nowhere.  The coolest thing I found was last year I found the wreckage of a Cessna aircraft that had crashed in the early 70's in the lower Adirondacks. half of the plane was gone, taken by people as "souveniers".

Quite a few years back I was hunting some property I had never been on before (of course I had permission) and came across a plumber's pipe vice with the stand attached cable locked to a tree. I was about 1/2 mile from the nearest road and 2 miles from any buildings. These things weigh in at about 30 lbs! Seemed a pretty strange thing to find in the middle of nowhere not to mentioned locked to a tree. When finished for the day I asked the farmer who owned the property about it. He said that his 13 year old son was carrying it to a friends house to use a couple of weeks earlier and got tired out carrying it so he locked it up and came home. Then he couldn't find it again! I took him to it the next day and he was very grateful to gert it back.

We were hunting stateland a few years ago and came across a bucket that was up right with no lid and was filled with water and leaves. When we dumped it out,  a drowned red squirrel came out. He must of fell in and could not get out and drowned.

I once came upon a cow carcass during the winter and a possum was crawling out the "south end".  Nasty, nasty nasty. The possum was covered with everything "inside" the cow but I'm sure he was full!

This Saturday while hunting I watched a female turkey start chasing a button buck around a clover field. She then joined her flock and the flock started moving towards the button buck. That was too much for him and he high-tailed it out of there.

Ok I wasn't hunting when I saw this this past weekend but I thought it was pretty funny. I was driving home when I saw a buck grazing in a cut over corn field. I stopped to watch him and there was also a flock of snow geese in one corner of the field feeding also. As I was sitting there watching a flock of canadian geese landed in another corner of the field by the road. Then a flock of turkeys came out of the woods in the back of the field by the deer. He turned and went back into the woods. The geese all turned and were watching the turkeys while the turkeys were all watching the geese. Pretty soon all three flocks were eyeing each other. It looked like a street fight getting ready to brew. I expected the birds to pull out weapons and start battling. They were getting very noisy, espicially when the turkeys got too cloose to the other flocks.

today I was out driving around I was going down this gravel road and out of the corner of my eye on the side of the road is thought I had seen a drake mallard tossed on the road so I turn around to see if it really was when I got closer to it I seen that it was a drake mallard so I pulled up to it to take a look and when I got about five feet away from it, it turned it's head and looked up at me. scared the crap out of me because it is -3 degrees it should have been dead or gone south. so I got out of my truck and walked up to it. It tried to get away from me but it was froze to the road. Duck season is closed so I was thinking what should I do. It looked pretty bad it had gotten shot. So I peeled it of the road and brought it into the ditch and took it out of it's misery. But to see a bird on the road two weeks after everything is froze up and it be alive when you walk up to it thats not normal.

About 10 years ago I was bowhunting on thanksgiving (early Oct. in Canada) and I was headed for my spot in an abandoned farmyard where I had a chair stashed in the bushes behind a big double tree.  As I approached I saw antlers sticking out from around the tree and thought I'd found one in bed.  I came to full draw and tiptoed through the grass, heart pumping away and.... it was already dead.   He'd been rubbing the tree with his antlers and got caught between the 2 trunks, apparently given a panic lurch and snapped his neck and died.  I was freaked out in a big way, what with the anticipation of the shot and all.  He wasn't warm anymore, but wasn't stiff yet and the birds in the tree hadn't been at the eyes yet.  I took some pictures next day and rolled him down the hill for the coyotes.  It made the Waterfront Press from Lumsden but I never kept a copy.. I stil have a pic. if I can get access to a scanner sometime I'll post the pic here.

Ok this happened to me this past saturday. I was hunting our farm in a stand near our border. I can see our field and the field on the land below us. I was watching 3 doe in our field when around 6:20 in the evening, prime time for deer activity, I hear a diesel motor coming up the hill towards the field below me. Sure enough a black pick up drives through the tractor opening below me. This scares the three doe in my field up the hill. the pickup truck stops as soon as it gets in the field and 2 guys wearing bluejeans and flannel jackets get out. They leave the truck running and the doors open and for 15 minutes they stand by the truck talking and staring up at our land. Then they get back in the truck and leave. By now it is dark. Talk about killing some good hunting time.  >:( It was very bizarre.

I was hunting a ridge on Saturday (10/21/06) when I hear some noise on the downhill side...coming towards me.  GREAT...I slowly turn into position as the heart starts pumping faster, when I realize I hear voices talking in the SAME direction.  From 50-60 yards away, I hear these two yahoo's "stalking" a big buck...when they get 15 yards away from me...the lead guy looks up (yeah...like a deer is in the trees) and seeing me, nearly jumped 3 ft. backwards.  He quickly turns around and starts heading back the direction they came from...talking loudly the entire way.  It's was about an hour before sunset (perfect time for deer movement) and these two "bow hunters" cleared the area of any wildlife!!  Doubt they're successful hunters...in ANY season!!

Any chance they knew you were up there, and came just to ruin your hunt. Wouldn't put it past anyone. We have a stand border on our property that a guy doesn't like us hunting out of, he has talked to us about it and knows it is legal. Would not be surprised if he would purposely ruin our hunt.  He has cut the line to lift our bows and rifles up to the stand and there are 4 posted no trespassing signs on the tree, nothing you can do but laugh and shoot a five point out of it ;D.

Last year my dad was hunting the same stand when a pick up truck drove into the same field and parked right next to our border. The guy got out of the truck and started putting hunting clothes on. As he was putting his hunting suit on he was looking around and noticed my dad in the same tree stand. He then took his hunting jacket off, put on a carhartt, grabbed a chainsaw out of the back of the truck, and walked over to a dead tree near our property but still on the horsefarm's, and started to cut the tree down. My dad went over to talk to him and the guy was all like, I did n't know anyone hunted here.I'm just cutting fire wood.  Ruined my dad's hunt for the morning and the idiot got the tree stuck on to another one. 1 year later and the tree is still there.

i was returning from a night out with my girl in her car -no gun- she stopped the deer was standing in the middle of the road. i got out opened the trunk pulled out her ball bat. and wacked it twice.. line drive to the head twice. called my pop and bro it was like 5 am they come and got the deer. i had to change clothes before dressing out the deer-actually my girlfriend did that but still.

i thought this deer was recently hit in the road. but upon skinning the deer out it was in a fight with a big buck. that punched it in the lung and left a 4" tine lodged in its rib cage.

Opening day of N.Y. deer season I watched a 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 year old doe [that was small] leading her fawn [a tiny button buck] around through the woods, I had to laugh out loud the little button buck had a tail about 20 inches long and it was full of burdock's.     It looked like a beaver tail or maybe a mud flap.....
Then to top it off there was two pilliated wood peckers in a tree about 65 yards away , I was awestruck at how fast they can dismantle a tree.

Yesterday I was in my stand when at about 11:00 am I here 3 "owls" calling to eachother. I was thinking now what. It was three hunters moving through the woods just over the border of the farm. I think they were putting on a drive and using "owl" calls t keep track of one another. I would have laughed but they kind of ruined my stand hunting.

While muzzleloader hunting this past season out in the western part of Massachusetts, I found a small tin lid cover(like the kind found on a mason jar) with the name "Ed" written in black marker. As I picked it up to put in my pocket to take the "trash" out of the woods, I happened to look at the tree to my left, which had several large mushrooms growing out of the side of it, and on the very top mushroom, there was a mason jar wrapped in purple velvet with a white bow wrapped around the neck. I took it down to peek inside- I found what appeared to be ashes. Well, I assumed that's where the lid belongs.I put the lid back on the jar and placed it back up on the mushroom mantel. Rest in peace Ed. Must have been his favorite hunting spot.

One day I went out hunting and I saw a weasel cross a little clearing in the front of my stand.  I didn't think much of it at the time, but this happened at the exact same time for the next week at the exact same place.  It got to the point that by the second day I was able to predict the exact time he came out, and I was just a few seconds off! :)  Then, I named him Weisenhoer.  I saw him all the way up to the last day that I went out hunting at this spot for the season.

I hope to see Weisenhoer next season! ;D

I find all sorts of things while hunting in the woods ! I hunt in a section of the Adirondacks that hasnt been logged in 75-80 yrs , but when it was there were logging camps all over . I can take you to rusted out cook stoves in the middle of no were . Another good one is a spot we call "Hunters Clearing" , the site of an old hunting camp were along the trail every once in a while you can find the old phone line poles that they used to talk to the main camp , these hand dug , hand cut , mostly hemlok poles go all the way back to the clearing , some 2 1/2 to 3 miles off the road !

While turkey hunting last spring I get a call on my radio from my buddy who is set up about 75 yards from me and he tells me to keep alert that I have a 5 foot turkey heading my way. Well, I knew it was slow and we weren't seeing/hearing anything, but I didn't know he was hallucinating from the lack of action. Sure enough about 5 minutes later I hear this scratching getting closer and I start to think - what the heck is going on. A few minutes later our 5 foot turkey came into view at about 25 yards out. It was a helluva thing seeing an ostrich standing there looking at me. Thought real hard about smokin it, but went to the farm down the road to let the guy know his pen must be open again.

Saturday afternoon I went out bow hunting. It poured from 4:30 -6:00 when it stopped a big buck came out feed in the field I was set up over.  I was excited because he was feeding my way!  All of sudden I hear over a loud speaker "Alright ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the party. Lets get things started with the Limbo!" . I was like wtf?  Apparently our neighbor was having an outdoor party complete with a DJ. That buck didn't like that music and took off away from me.  >:(  . Do you know how weird it is to be hunting while listening to the limbo being played a 1/2 mile away?

I was out deer hunting last week and was in my stand that overlooks a marsh we duck hunt. I watched a muskrat individually chase out woodies  from the cattails one at a time into the open water and would swim after them until they flew off. Apparently they just couldn't get along!

Saturday morning I tried a new stand we put up over looking the corner of a clover field. I got into the stand at 5:15 am. At 5:30 I felt something swish by my head and it was an owl. a couple seconds later a second owl swishes by my head. They both circle around and dive bomb me again!  :o  For 15 minutes I was dive bombed by a pair of owls until it got day light and they left. The whole time they kept whooing at me. I've never had that happen before.

There is a two track about a half of a mile into the woods on some state land where I hunt and there is a metal sign hung on a tree that says "jesus is coming soon". About a year ago I walked with some friends past the sign about another half mile along the two track and found and identical sign hung along the same trail. Then this year, I went even further past the two signs and found a 3rd sign. Im still wondering if I should follow it more and go find jesus!  ;D

Sunday morning I was sitting in my stand and a grey squirrel came about 10 yards away and went up a tree and disappeared. Not all that exciting I know happens all the time. Well 15 or 20 minutes later I saw something about 20 yards out and as I watched I finally noticed 2 grouse had just landed. OK I know no big deal. Well as the first grouse started walking away that squirrel ran down the tree and ran over toward the grouse. The grouse ran about 10 feet and stopped. The squirrel ran after it and stopped about 5 feet from it, the grouse moved another few feet and so did the squirrel, and then the grouse moved again and so did the squirrel. Finally the grouse flew up onto a branch and the squirrel continued off into the distance.
Now I don't know if that squirrel doesn't like grouse or is mixed up in love, but I sure never saw anything like that before.

Thats sound like what I found one day bow hunting last year. I stepped in the woods around 4pm to take a night stand. I had scouted this area about 2 months earlier and decided the weather conditions were perfect for this area. As I walked in this 1/2 trail ,at the end I could see what I thought was a white tail of a deer. Sneaking up to this old cut out surrounded by fur trees, I noticed more white objects. As I tried to cut through the small pines to see what was going on, I happened to look down and almost stepped on a bear trap. Come to find out (16) five gallon buckets sitting in this little area with 8 foot "oregano" plants standing nice in tall. Trust me, I high tailed it out of there as fast as I could. My cousin is a Sargent for the local PD so I told him of the location and he and the state police set up a nice invitational experience for a local contractor trying to make a quick buck. You would of thought someone would have purchased green paint to camo the buckets. Da!

while putting on a drive on his property, my buddy found a dead, frozen grey fox hanging in a tree about 6' off the ground... he musta slipped and his back legs got stuck when walking the leaning tree... im assuming he went unconscious and eventually froze
This is a story someone told me, so who know's if it's true? While hunt'n the U.P. Mi. a yong Doe was walking toward the now full draw hunter. The doe intently looking at him! The doe walked within 2 yards and appeared agitated. After walking away and coming back several times the hunter decided to follow the doe. She led him over 200yds of cut timber to a stump with a fork in it. There was her fawn! Hanging from it's rear leg! So the hunter released the fawn and the pair soon left the area.
Later, Walleye Steve

I was bowhunting once and found a deflated balloon with a note attached. The note was from a 2ND grader in Ohio. His whole class had released balloons with notes asking the finder to respond by telling where it was found.  It took a small amount of my time but it was well worth it.  I told them the exact location where I found it, which was about 150 miles from the release point.  They thanked me for the info and said they were so excited because I was the only one to respond at that point.  Makes you feel good!

Another time, I was out during gun season and had walked into the woods a hundred yards and saw one of those metal milk boxes.  I went over and sat on it for a while, thinking it was someones deer stand.  I got a strange feeling about what might be in it, if anything.  I stood up and flipped the lid.  Wow!  It was full of assorted girlie magazines.  To most 18 year old's, this was a real treasure.  I hauled it back to my car and gave up a couple hours of deer hunting to scan through them.

I never found any magazines. I found several year ago a balloon in the deep woods that had a styrofoam box attached. It was a "radio scone" or weather balloon. It was pretty cool just to find something out of the ordinary junk.

Not while hunting, but while fishing...  I was checking out a widewater section on the Erie Canal on my bicycle.  There was a small dirt road leading into the spot I wanted to check, so I rode in that way.  There was some trees that had been cleared by someone a few years back, as if they were going to build there.  One stump sticking up had a something a little different on it - a white garter belt.  I figure a young couple must have parked there after a prom or wedding, and did the deed.   ;D

Saw a pair of underwear 10 + feet up in a tree 2 + miles back in the woods doing some scouting this year.
One iof my co-workers found a sweet 300 win mag this year during bow season.    Turns out a Conservation Officer had chased a guy through the woods for hunting with a rifle during bow season, the man tossed the gun before the CPO could catch up to him, the CPO never could find where the man had tossed the rifle.

The gun hadnt been in the woods but for a day or two so it was in good condition but he gave it to the CPO to use as evidence if needed.
