around 7:30 yesterday morning in NE MA after running the can and grunt calls, a doe and skipper came bounding toward me. i could hear a buck grunting again and again from where they came from. the does stopped less than 20 yards from me and kind of looked around. grunting continued. then the does continued on their way. i braced myself, waiting for the buck. then i see two deer coming. the first one was a nice buck. second one looked like a doe, but then i realized it was a spike just following the big boy. every 2nd or 3rd step, the big boy would let out a quick grunt. i've never seen that before...only in videos!
the leader went right where the does had gone, less than 20 yards from me. i stopped him and let one fly. he took off with the spike hot on his tail. i watch as they headed into the swamp then hook left. then i only see one deer running.
the spike ended up walking right by me afterwards!
got down an hour later. walked over to where i last saw them and saw this:
the RAGE broadhead went right into the top area of the heart.
i took a pic w/ the camera timer (cutting off my head) and gutted it. started dragging and began thinking this might be my heaviest deer yet (previous heaviest was 183). i wasn't thinking it would be 200, but more likely 175 - 185.
i checked it in and my dad came and took it home to cut it up since i'll be traveling for work this week (to montana - wish i could hunt there!!!). he weighed it on his cabelas dial scale and it was just a hair over 200 lbs! very cool!!
that was one of the best hunts i've ever had. hearing the big guy grunting like that over and over was very cool!
here are a few more pics:
here's a pic w/ my dad (6' 2") to better show the size...
