Shaggy Mane question?
« on: Sep 19, 2005, 01:54:39 PM »
We have an over abundance of shaggies around my area.  Question is, HOW can I keep these dang shrewms from "inking" so fast?  They rarely save, but a pretty tasty fried.  So here lies the dilemma!  How can you preserve them for more than 12 hours after picking?   Any good recipes for them other than fried?  Thanks folks in advance.  -Barleydog

Get a dehydrator and dry em, just like morels. To rehydrate them just put them in warm water for about 45 minutes. Just like fresh.                        Ron

Ron,  You have done these before on the dehydrator? :-\   My friend said they made a "heck of a mess" in his!   Did ya slice them, or just put them in whole?  I love dried morels and chantrelles(sp), but these guys are really fragile?  Please assure me they won't go to waste! ;)  Thanks!  Barleydog

Well Barleydog I didnt think there was anything that couldnt be dehydrated but i may be wrong. i would take one and slice it and try it. If it does make a mess it will be a small one LOL. i havent done them personally, but its worth a shot.              Ron

OK,  Shaggy manes will dehydrate!  It's not hard, and no they don't bleed into your dehydrator.  Problem is, there's only so many times I can eat mushrooms with moose or caribou.  Someone please fess up some recipes that involve dried shaggies, i'd be happy! ;D
