Title: JJ's Spypoints
Post by: CAPTJJ on Aug 15, 2012, 10:40:28 AM
Haven't used a trail cam in years, decided to try one, last one used film. :o

The Spypoint Tiny-W2 has a second module that can be placed up to 250 feet away from the camera, the module has an SD  card like the cam and makes a copy of every picture/video. This has a couple benefits, the big one being that you don't have to scent up a spot just to check the pics, you can check them from a distance; one thing I suspect with older bucks is that many are educated by hunters using trail cams and not worrying about scent. It also helps if someone decides to steal the cam, you should have their pic. ;) Also has IR flash. Will double as boat security, may get another if it works good.

Very cool. I like the fact that it has a separate module for the SD card. Especially if some maggot tries to walk off with the camera.

Finally got it out in a good spot way up the ridge a couple days ago, hope to have some pictures this week. Now is the time to try and pattern a buck with cams, pics of bucks in velvet are nice but don't help to fill a tag so much.

This camera is set up for a Python cable lock, thought I could find one locally but no luck; have one coming from Amazon, then I can put it in some better places without worrying about someone stealing it.

They are nice I use them with my homebrews. They better have some serious bolt cutters. ;)

Pulled the cam this afternoon, pics came out pretty good.

First pic and deer was a spikey, only buck I got.

Nice pics JJ, I like the quality of that spypoint cam, I can't afford1 @ that price. I bought a new Wildgame on Sunday & I'm going to post a slide show on my thread as soon as I'm done here. Doesn't compare to yours.

Need to move the cam and check for pictures tomorrow.

Also ordered another Spypoint, this time I got the Tiny-D, same camera but without the wireless black box; waiting on another Cobra lock before I put it out.

Best prices on these are from Bowhunter's Superstore, like most things, and they ship them out right away.

Not satellite, just stores it in a remote location. They make one that sends the pics out by cell phone, looks the same. If someone sees this in the woods they might think that's how it works. Maybe I'll put a fake antenna on the new one to fool people so they don't touch it. ;)

Camera is confirming my suspicions, not much mast in the woods and the deer are roaming eating whatever they find; very tough to pattern them and I get a picture here or there, nothing regular.

The tree I took my first archery buck(was first bow deer, also) and bear from is on the right.

Left one camera out when I went to Ohio; was going to put out out there but didn't see the need to spend the time. Got some doe pics and a couple small bucks; no pics of the bigger buck making rubs but I haver a cam on them now. ;) Different spot than where I got my 6 pointer, one group has been hunting it a lot I hear, others sneak in I'm sure also; might be worth hunting late season.

Put out the other cam on the scraps from my first buck. Almost 1000 pics in a couple days: lots of crows, a raven or two, one red tailed hawk, some red fox, NOT ONE single coyote???? I know they are around??? The foxes were very cautious as expected, came at night first, then during the day; they never really seemed to grab any bones/scraps, but did dig up a big area next to the pile. I am trying again with the scraps from my last deer.

It was time to check the cams this afternoon. Had a couple deer on the one by the rubs, one might be a small buck; left the cam since it is cooling down this weekend and they may move more.

The camera on the second pile of deer scraps had 1600+ pics on it; lots of crows, the foxes and redtail made regular appearances, and a couple coyote pics but they didn't stay long.

First animal was a yote but the foxes showed up soon after.

Pulled the cam after a couple nights set on video, still getting the foxes; no hawk though, only a squirrel during the day. I think video may be the way to go, especially for night time: didn't get the flash washout and not blurry like a lot of the IR pics are.

Grabbed a camera yesterday while out riding in the snow; second one is higher up the mountain and I will need to snowshoe up to get it. Have been trying to get pics of the buck that made some big rubs, haven't gotten any on the lower cam, second one is near a big cluster of rubs so I think it is near his bed/core. I'll put this cam back on a heavily used trail in the snow next, easy to find where they are travelling now.

Deer definitely notice the camera when the IR flash goes off, had the cam hidden under the branches of a small hemlock.

One decent buck that I didn't know about, should be a good 3 year old next year; he turned right around.

This doe noticed the cam but it didn't seem to bother her as she fed for a few minutes.

Good looking pics. Bucks are definitely more likely to have negative responses to cameras. Don't know why but some bucks I will only see on a camera once and then they avoid it, others get used to them. Having the camera high facing down did seem to help some for me with the bucks.

Can't believe the snow has gone down so much, I was able to drive my ATV all the way up to the one camera that was still out.

Got a few pics back in late Dec, but not much since it snowed; there were plenty of tracks around. ::)

First buck(not sure if the is the 7 from later or the 6 from the other cam):

Big doe:

Nice 7 pointer I didn't know about; I can't believe he is responsible for all the big rubs, but maybe :-\ :

Gonna take advantage of the weather and get both cameras out tomorrow. Both are still showing full charge on the batteries; cold doesn't seem to bother them, got some pictures(no animals though) at -14F according to the built in thermometer.

Wen to check my cams today, could only get to the lower one with the soft snow; even then had to walk the last part, couldn't get all the way up the hill. Should be able to get to the other one later in the week or early next week, then put them out for turkeys later in the month.

Had the camera set on video, forgot about that; thinking about it probably should have been on photo mode beacause I thought it was on a trail at this spot. Wsn't sure why I had so much activity all on one day: 84 30 second videos from 7:43 am to 1:41 pm.

One good note about the cam, still have full batteries showing, same set since new last summer. 8)

Great videos CaptJJ. You are making a very good case for putting the Spypoints very high on the list for the next camera. Have you noticed them making any noise when taking a picture? The deer don't seem to mind them any.
Title: Re: JJ's Spypoints
Post by: CAPTJJ on Mar 05, 2013, 08:00:55 PM
It seemed like the close doe would look at the camera once in a while. They didn't make any noise when I checked, I heard some do when the IR turns on(something about different lenses); it does make a red glow for the IR flash. These were all daytime, of course, so it didn;t matter.

Lots of chewing trheir cud, even while sleeping by the looks of it:

Watch the neck on the front one, she chews then swallows, then you can see her regurgitate and start chewing again:

It seemed like the close doe would look at the camera once in a while. They didn't make any noise when I checked, I heard some do when the IR turns on(something about different lenses); it does make a red glow for the IR flash. These were all daytime, of course, so it didn;t matter.

Thanks, they seem like real good cams. I really like the model with the remote storage, that was a great idea. My big moultries have an IR filter that is flipped infront of the lens at night and the deer hear it from a mile away I have one permanantly in place now to stop the noise since most buck movement isn't in bright sun light. IR flash only seems to scare bucks in my experience, does notice it but bucks bolt and usually avoid the camera indefinately. I try to only use the moultries to pattern the does or in areas far from my good stands. Having them up by the stand helps a little but having cameras where I hunt always seems to hurt more than help.

Grabbed the other camera today, still a good amount of snow, got most of the way up on the ATV.

What is that red glow? Let me get a closer look:

Shed buck, probably the 7 in the other pics, camera was only moved 10 yds:

Jumper:

Another shedder:

The last two deer pics I got look like the same buck, and he only sticks around for one pic each time:

Nice pic's!  Almost looks like that big "doe" was a buck that had lost its antlers already...  ???

Starting to think that more myself, you must be talking about this one. I wasn't sure when I posted and hoped someone would comment, thanks:

Looks like the same buck again, same spot:

I now think the other shed buck(last two pics) was the 7, the big guy I have been looking for must have dropped before Xmas. ;)

The deer on 1/17/13 is a big doe. ;D
