pretty sure he has brows and his ends are forking, tall 8 in the new spot, young buck though/
Apparently someone got the memo that rut started...

I know there are a few dandys in these areas as per pictures from last year, hope to get a pic or two of them soon, it was nice to see that tall 8 in my new spot also, still have 4 cams to put out yet
-
Nice pics Jon. 8)
-
Some great pictures jlaclair. I am hoping to check one of mine tomorrow.
-
thanks, nothing huge yet, except that last doe :o she looks like she could eat that 8...I think that other buck is a small 6, I also have a large spike picture I believe...the spot with that small 6 I got a picture of a 4pt, a couple 8s, a 6 or two, 2 different 9 points and some large bodied huge antlered buck I couldnt tell how many points, but the 4 point I got a picture of in that spot last year was bigger than that 6 so I dont know where he came from...Im sure someone shot the 4 point, this is all state land, be nice to check out the 180 acres of private I got permission on, big 10 shot there last year, and I know of a large 6 so ill have to get a cam there.
I also have a runway in that same area as that tall 8 that I am going to put another camera on...one more spot I want to ask permission about that I know has a buck that will be in the 140's as well...hopefully ill have some luck at least gaining access.
-
Good stuff!
-
Nice ;D
-
Nice.... ;D
-
just saw a monster deer in the backyard, didnt see any headgear though, not much light. I grabbed the spotlight and it was gonezo...too bad there is a house behind mine
-
Nice pic's Jon; Getting itchy like me ;) ;D ;D
-
Good pics, keep checking there has to be a big 1 out there! ???
-
He going to come around and show himself very soon ;) ;D ;D
-
Just saw a rack across the river from a spot Im interested in hunting, I know of a large 10 in there, it wasnt him, not sure if this deer I saw moments ago could even get across the river to the spot I was interested in, there is a very steep bank and rushing water (which I am sure doesnt matter as much) but I have been dabbling with the idea of wading across the river and hunting in no mans land, maybe even taking a tent and stay 2 days or something, not sure...he def has some antlers though, decent looking ones..
-
well, went up to my camp today as a last minute decision, the black berries are doing great, saw some deer sign...4 trees fell on my camp but only the woodshed was damaged luckily, I guess there are several trees across parts of roads, it will be interesting to see what that microburst did to our hunting areas/trails...Ill have to take a cam up and set it on a runway next week for fun.
I also did a little scouting at another property I have to hunt, saw tons and tons of sign, I guess she has been seeing a few different bucks around, will be nice to see what happens when the field get cut, should be a great year.
Ill post pictures of camp later.
-
I Enjoy those little ventures myself from time to time ;D ;D
-
well here are the pics from my trip to camp, will hopefully have some trail cam pics to post later...

Wow Jon, that's really to bad about the tree coming down.. But the rest of the pictures are sweet.....
-
ya it was 4 trees total I think, one big poplar and 3 cherry, they just missed the camp, landing on the garage/shed
-
not much of a card pull, my one spot I got a couple big does coming through and I think that one small 4 again, the other spot even less pictures but that 8 point came back through and that big doe also a yote...

set another cam out on a nice runway, hopefully get some pics from there in the next couple weeks...still have 3 cams to put out
-
Nice pics Jon. I guess on the brightside of things you will have plenty of firewood at camp. The little one looks ready to ride. ;D ;D 8)
-
ya haha thats what I said when we got up there, I guess there were several large cherries across the road in another spot, my dad and a few people went up this weekend and cut them out of the way, made enough wood for a couple seasons, debating on whether or not to put a trail cam up to my camp, I wouldnt be able to check it but maybe 2-3 times this year....not sure if itd be worth it. dont make it up there like I use to...
...and ya he is ready to ride, but we arent ready to let him haha, might try and have him sit in a hut this hunting season and get a deer during muzzleloader, if he can keep quiet the last 30min of light I think we will have a shot
-
Great pictures Jon......
-
What a beautifull camp you have ;D ;D ;D ;D I am in serious camp envy ;)
-
Nice pic's Jon ; Keep me in mind hehehe ;) ;)
-
ya I love it up there ;D been in the family for 86 years now, nothing like 10,000 acres of private land that you share with some friends and family...I might be convinced to have people join me 8)
-
Nice camp. Too bad about the tree coming down. Sure are some deer moving through.
-
ya the deer are in a completely different area, Id like to put a cam up there because I know that there are some real monster bucks up there but I dont get enough time to check it or go up much any more :(
-
awesome pics and camp too...check face book out and see what I have from montana so far.....once photo bucket speeds up I will share with all
-
Nice pics j....that camp looks cozy glad the trees missed it..
-
I was just looking at those Montana pics, I had to stop because I started to think that I should figure a way to hunt there hahah
Ya We are very happy it missed the main part of the camp, I will have to get pictures of my small camps inside as well next time
-
To bad with the tree makes more work ; Very enjoy able time up there I bet ;D ;D
-
Nice pics...
-
Your camp is awesome!!!!
-
thanks, the original camp was an old horse barn from the late 1800's-early early 1900's. The loggers wood keep the horses there and I think maybe stay there themselves on occasion and skid logs out and float them down the river, the people we lease from said it was no longer safe for us to camp in it, it was much larger (not as tall) but pretty crumby haha, so we tore it down and rebuilt. There was one night when this apple was spinning on the shelf and everyone was watching, trying to figure out what was going on, finally we moved the apple and saw a small black furry hand come through reaching for it...silly coons...back then you would swear the loggers were still around with the harmonic sounds of hunters snoring...
-
so, driving home from a friends today and saw an 8 point that I saw last year around this time in the same spot, he looked a little heavier and wider but thats about it, the weird part was....I am pretty sure he was out of velvet...took a poopy cell pic so you cant really see, I need to get a good camera and keep it with me, very handsome deer though, wouldnt put him even at 120" though i dont think, its on private land so I will prob never know, prob a 3 year old deer, but out of velvet already?
-
Becky can get you a camera when she gets you your life time licence....... ;D ;D ;D
-
Nice pics, you guys have a great setting there. Are there many camps in the area or do you have it all to yourselves?
-
there are only a couple camps, generally each camp sticks to its own territory, its 15.5sq miles of woods surrounded by woods, but we all lease it so you can shoot a deer where ever, tons of bear up there to, we have been having an issue with them especially, the state releases several nuisance bears a year up there and they eat all the fawn so the population of deer has gone down, now everyone is ready to shoot bear...there are many nice bucks up there though
-
Nice pictures. A man could get lost on 10000 acres.....hunts2long
-
Great pics
-
Seems a bit early to be out of velvet but I guess there is that rare occasion.

thats what I was thinking, but this looked like hard white sharp bone...
-
took my son with me today, and he did great, we walked a lot and he was quiet as could be,I think we will be able to sit in the "hut" this year for 1/2 hour or so and hopefully tag one with the muzzleloader together. we checked a few cams and put up a new stand, not a very good card pull which I was surprised by, one spot I got a bunch of does and that same small 6 point, and the other spots just does, I dont know if the bear box is interfering with the cuddeback or what, I am sure I had more than a couple deer walk in front of it in the past week...no 8 point this week either. I moved one cam a tiny bit and will prob move the other on a different runway. I know there are some larger bucks there, so hopefully I can get the right spot for the camera. The stand location is pretty nice, need to bring a new strap in for it, but it should be a great spot, large ridge in front with a swamp behind, lots of deer sign and rubs from last year
-
Sounds like a good time. Just saw the pics on FB with your little guy. Gotta be cool showing him everything.

its amazing man, he is a champ too, cant wait til he can start carrying a firearm
-
So I have spotted some nice bucks in this field, I got permission to hunt neighboring property which these deer roam on, I am in the process of getting permission on more land next to the spot I already got. I was driving home from work and spotted this guy pretty easy, called up the wife and said grab the little guy and the video camera meet me outside, there is a nice buck....I grabbed them turned around and headed back, sure enough! there he was! Enjoy

-
Nice little video clip!!
-
Nice video jon ; love to see the arrow covered in Red ;) ;) :) :)
-
Thats pretty cool! Great vid.
-
Nice footage j.....good luck with him ;D
-
thanks guys, usually they move out of that area a bit in the fall and hang out on this other bit of property, but its all surrounded by road, there is one in there that will score over 140" I am sure but I havent seen him since the spring...I got permission on over a 100 acres just down from there but am working on getting access to a spot 500 yrds or so from where the video was shot, if he walks within range I am going to take him, then hopefully the bigger one comes in haha the bigger one last year (either May or early June) was outside his ears already and had 8 countable points with huge mass and 3 months to grow, I saw him this spring right after he dropped his antlers and his pedicals were the size of my palm and he was easily over 200lbs dressed with a big old horse head
-
Why did the deer cross the road???
To get to the C'Mere deer of course.... :P
-
Sounds like you miss your long lost friend Scott ;D
-
Good vid footage there buddy.
-
Nice video, he's waiting for your arrow! ;D
-
Nice video jlaclair. You even got some buck fever. ;D ;D
-
I was pumped to see him, I have permission right near there, now to get permission a little closer haha then it becomes a game of chase, just need to be one step ahead of him

May just take you up on that

Alright, got a decent card pull, nothing huge, but did get some interesting pics, looks like a couple new small bucks in the mix.
I also noticed last week that a stump had been getting chewed up near one of the runs my camera is on, I moved the cam...
was cool to see triplets, there were a couple other bears I got pics of but all smaller ones...that stump must have something good in it, or with the drought they are seeking different food sources, either way pretty neat.
here are the other pics which some are horrible but there are a couple new bucks in the area it seems.

thanks guys, I sure wish one of those big guys from last year would show up, but thats them big woods for ya, almost impossible to pattern...those couple smaller ones seem to be patterned but Id rather pass, hopefully I gain permission at this other spot and can get some pics of that 8 I got a video of or his dad! Maybe I can get a bear here in a couple weeks too!

Very nice.....I'm headed for my stagg club camp Saturday and thinking about putting a camera out
-
ya just got off the phone with the old man, he didnt put the cam out, he will hopefully this weekend, hope he remembers my instructions haha, they did see a small bear up there as well, but we are infested with nuisance bears up there...hopefully he sets the cam up right on the right trail and we can get a pic of a nice buck

Nice Jon. Love the bear pic
-
I'm w/everyone else on the bear pic. Since I got that bear last yr. & the 1 in back yard the other night. I'm partial to bears now. I like hunting will continue to hunt deer but bear has become my new obsession. I don't think I could shoot a sow that has cubs w/her. That looks to be a nice deer as well in the pics. Good luck! ;D
-
well, just got all my gear that I ordered, the boots are amazing cant wait to use them, camera arm is great, backpack is awesome, several other things, just need to give the camo a good sports wash and grab some scent killer and organize everything how I'd like and Im ready to go...unfortunately I still need to hang some stands but other than that ready to go!
-
Good love new gear. What camera arm did you get?
-

Pulled some cards today, not much to see, got a few nice sized doe and a little 6 point who's G3s seem to curve it which is pretty cool, another bear, and unfortunately another animial...but thats state land for you...have to scout my private land spots tomorrow

I'm kind of hoping he is just going to the swamp to check for his special plants...
-
Great pictures!!! Looks like you should have an eventful hunting season.
-
Nice pics j......maybe he is scouting for a tree stand location ???
-

lol If it is you should get his autograph. :D
-
well, spotted two nice bucks on the way home about 1/8 mile- 1/4 mile from some property I have permission to hunt, actually butting the property and thats pretty close, just need to get in and scout and set up a stand. I am thinking that one was the 8 I got a video of, the other looked similar either and 8 or a 10, both were good sized 120"-135" one slightly larger than the other, I ran and got the camera and tried to get video but it was too dark... how you guys think I should go about hunting it? just get close to the property line (which isnt marked) and find a heavy used runway set up off it and put a cam out?
-
For the big bucks I have much better luck finding the main run and then looking for the secondary runs off of it. Those are the ones the big boys will use until the rut...... 8) Slower action but it PAYS HUGE DIVIDENDS!
-
word, I will do that, try to find a highway and look for a byway, be cool to have it pay off on new land
-
Right on!
-
Keep a eye open for the hot food sources in your area j .....if these bucks are using crop fields I would find where they like to enter the field then follow the trail toward the bedding area to find a staging area....go in mid day and set your camera up
-
Well I got to sit in the stand for the first time of the year, went after some bear. I called it early because of some work I needed to do at home and was getting a little chilled. I didnt see anything but probably would have if I stayed, maybe a deer or two or a bear. I am pretty sure I could hear a bear cub in the distance bawling but they never made it down before I took off. On my way out I heard a deer blowing like crazy, my wind was good and it was a ways away so I dont know what was going on. It was nice to test out some of my new gear, I will be back at it tomorrow at my camp, camera in hand. then tuesday headed up for the epic salmon fishing.
-
Must have been nice to be on stand. Targeting bear in NY has to be tough. Finding the acorns or berries they're hitting now is probably the way to find them.

yah, i look for hard/soft mass that they are hitting regularly along with logs and pines that they are chewing up either for the pitch or insects, that with knowing an area near where they den up is good. My camp seems to have more bear than deer now, so hopefully I will tag one tonight
-
Headed up to camp for an evening bear hunt fingers crossed, lots of bear sign in this area so should have a chance, going to try a bear bomb: cake icing. then I plan on dealing with the weather for a few hours of salmon fishing tomorrow. report tomorrow night
-
good luck, go salmon fishing first then use it for bait haha
-
wish I could bait haha, i wouldnt mind hitting the brook trout spawn up there though...maybe ill take a rod...
-
doesnt sound like a bad idea, good luck sounds like you got a nice couple days planned
-
For the big bucks I have much better luck finding the main run and then looking for the secondary runs off of it. Those are the ones the big boys will use until the rut...... 8) Slower action but it PAYS HUGE DIVIDENDS!
2X I always set up on the smaller run that is normally down wind.
-
Saw two really nice bears, more on story tomorrow.. good night fishing in am

alright so here is the skinny:
9/17/12 Bear Camp @ Camp
I made the run this morning (9/17) up to my camp 2.5hrs away, they have been dropping nuisance bears at my camp heavily for the past 5 years, last year they dropped over 12 bears. A neighboring club shot 13 different bears last year and didnt scratch the surface. Unfortunately they have been destroying our deer population and at this point it seems there are more bear than deer...We are out to reduce the bear population. I arrived at the camp property and started looking for animal sign like always, at one point I looked down the bank to the river and saw a 6 or 8 point who started running along the bank then ran across the river stopping on the opposite bank...too bad it wasnt deer season, he then took off. I pulled into my camp with what seemed like plenty of time to get to the stand, I geared up and off I went. my firearm of choice my new bow. I had set a stand in an area known to have a bear den or two, near it were several blackberry patches which were loaded this year, and cherry trees also loaded. In this conifer thicket there was an old logging trail, several blown down trees which the bears often use to make dens. There is usually bears in this area, so I looked for some sign before setting up the stand a week or two ago. I found where they had been milling and pawing at some logs in a small clearing. I picked up a bear bomb (first time trying one) and headed in. I was walking in around 3pm thinking this would be plenty early, I wasnt ready for what was to happen.
As I neared my stand, I was looking towards the clearing and noticed a set of eyes, a large head and a broad pair of shoulders about 17yrds in front of my stand staring at me. I couldnt believe it...A bear, a large bear. I froze and got my bow ready, made the rookie mistake of not being prepared. There was a hump in the way and as the bear got on all 4s I could see the top of his back as he was walking off. I am sure if I snuck forward quickly and popped up he would be broadside, but then he took off into the brush. I could here trees breaking as he went, then silence. I guessed the bear to be around 200+ lbs, but now having thought it could have been more, I am sure it was possible to be a pope and young bear. I sat quietly for a minute before getting in the stand. I went and set the bear bomb off and climbed up.
I was sitting for what seemed to be forever, every now and then I thought I heard a bear circling me. I was sitting still patiently waiting with camera at my side, when between 5:30pm-5:45pm I looked into the pines to see something walking, a very large bear was walking my direction. My heart pounded like never before as I turned the camera on and reached for my bow. It is unbelievable how quiet and animal of that size can be. This bear easily a pope and young bear, not sure if it was the same bear as the first, this one seemed larger. It seemed to take forever and unfortunately for the position of the bear and thickness of the pines I couldnt get it on film. It came within 20yards of me, sitting down at my left. I was falling apart as it got closer, coyotes started to howl like wolfs at this point. This bear was much taller than I (I am 6' tall) and I am sure I couldnt get my lanky arms around it...I put it at easily over 300lbs with a large head...I was sure it was about to walk around and come up the trail to me...and then silence....I could hear it circling every now and then and 7:15 rolled around and the bear had disappeared as quickly and quietly as it had came...
I could have easily shot both of these bear with a rifle, but I am determined to get one with the bow, and film it to boot...This was probably one of the most nerve racking and exciting hunts I have ever been on.
-
Great story Jon... Better luck next time....

Getting way to much attention the State don't want that ; To bad they put him down

You mean they couldn't tranquilize the animal then lift it out w/a chopper. I know it would have cost money but to save the animal the cost would be worth it. IMO

That was a thought, but it was already injured I guess and deteriorating in condition...Who knows if they could have got a chopper close enough, or if tranquing it would have hurt it more...its too bad

Lots of updating to do...Been working like a mad man, so I finally get a chance to update, and do a little hunting!
9/29 early archery
After unfortunately losing a couple days off that I had requested, I got a chance to do a little hunting. I headed to a property where I have 150acres to hunt back near where I grew up. I had talked to the property owner this summer and she had been seeing some does and a couple bucks, so things were looking good, I had managed to get a treestand up in an awesome location. There is a large L shaped field surround by hardwood with a section of pine separating another small field which connects to the main field. deer typically come out of the bedding area which is a marsh just down hill from this staging area, this is where my new stand is. I left work Friday night and made the 2hr trek to my moms house, and woke up early on Sat, but not early enough, I was getting to my stand and the sun was not really up yet, but there was slight visibility and as I neared my stand I busted a deer, I figured at this point I would just stay on the ground, I still hunted some small trails and glassed the field edges. I noticed up the hill near the house there was a large bodied deer, I put a sneak on through the woods and up behind. I spotted the deer as I came closer, but having only seen the one deer I thought I was in good shape, I got within 60 yards to realize there were 4 other deer looking at me through some brush...busted, I managed to sneak within 50 yards but was not going to attempt a shot.
I left for a new hunting location that a relatively new friend and fellow huntingforum member allowed me to join and crash at his house. We decided to do a super traditional hunt, having seen black and white photos of the past of deer hanging over the side of a canoe had us excited. We paddled a canoe out to a remote location with recurves in hand and gillie suits on our backs. There were several oaks and hickory all over the area, and there was def deer that traveled through. We separated and found brush piles to hide in...well one of us found brush, the other found poison ivy...(hope you are ok buddy haha) unfortunately we managed to see nothing, I saw squirrels and chipmunks but that was about it. Still a hunting experience I will never forget, Thank you RamRod for helping me live a dream.
Chicken Mushrooms, was probably 40+lbs here I should have grabbed some

9/30 Salmon Fishing
Decided to take a day since I was in The neck of the woods and go salmon fishing...Man O Man what a year for salmon as many of you have heard and seen already..I landed a few, which was awesome because although I have hooked 1000s here something always happens where I never land one haha, I didnt get pictured of my biggest but she went 32+lbs, I netted 20+ fish for guys and hooks into 60+ myself, was a great day under the bridge, its unbelievable how many salmon are in there. I had the next two days of so I headed to the finger lakes for the Archery Opener!

10/1-10/2
Since I had the days off and was only an hour or so from my friends house near Ithaca, I made the trip. I got there the night of 9/30 to his Mother's house where I was greeted with Chili (in hindsight was not the best idea before hunting) and it felt great to be there. We went to a new stand Sunday night so I could have the option of hunting there the next day, was off of a swampy area known to have some large bucks, found rubs there bigger than my thigh last year. There was plenty of deer sign and I had plenty of tags! I decided to hunt behind the house however the next morning. There had been a large 6 point hanging around that was actually spotted the year before, at this point he is guessed to be a 3.5 y/o over 100" 6 point... I wanted him because he mocked me last year.
I woke up early and geared up with the gillie and the recurve and got into the crotch of a large tree just off of a trail that I have shot a couple deer from. There were rubs all over the place so I felt confident. I had sat in this spot a couple years ago and had 16 deer walk past me by 7:15 am. Around 7:00 I looked in the neighbors back field only 60yrds from me and wouldnt you know it...there he was. Handsome, Tall white rack, amazing 6 point, with a small buck. I was pretty excited to say the least. I was sure he was going to walk into the woods hit the trail and come right passed me...I waited...and waited...and nothing happened..I ended up seeing a doe at 45yrds but she was walking at a quick pace and I didnt want feel comfortable with the shot. I checked the area he went down to and as far as I can tell he either crossed the road down into the swamp or bedded down and came out after I was done hunting. I did a little still hunt/ scouting of the area mid day and bumped one deer, then saw another hunter so decided to head back.
The evening of 10/1 I hunted the new stand my friend showed me, I was pretty anxious to shoot a deer and got to the stand early...I am only recently a stand hunter having grown up doing drives and constantly moving in every day life so it is hard for me to sit for any large amount of time. I decided not to bring the video camera due to the weather and I wish I had, I also had my new Mathews. a couple hours went by when I looked ahead of me to see 2 bucks coming right at me, the first was a gnarly looking 4 point, he had a narrow rack with good mass, his left side had a few small bumps and his rright had a 3' brow and a crab claw, the other buck was a wider chocolate horned 6 point with short tines. I did not really want to shoot either but they came right to me. The 4 point stopped at the trail I came in on, at 15yrds looked both ways then walked directly under me and brushed against the tree I was in. The 6 came to my left and stopped behind an apple tree and somehow pegged me out, he stared at me for a while while the 4 point walked behind me and came back out on my right at 15yrds broadside...I decided to shoot at the 6. he started to move, stopping every now and then to feed, I ranged him at 19yrds through some brush, and saw a clearing ahead of him....I stupidly did not range the clearing and assumed it to be around 30 yrds, but the distance up the tree and the fact he was walking up and incline had me fooled. He stopped broadside in the opening all on his own, the second easiest shot I have ever had with me bow. I held for 30 and rushed my shot...clean over his shoulders....he didnt even flinch until the arrow was buried in the ground...He trotted to 35yrds but I couldnt get another arrow fast enough by the time he trotted off and walked away...I ranged the clearing he was in at the shot...23yrds...I feel like an idiot...shortly after I had a doe come in and walk through several openings from 15-30 yrds but I was so jacked up about the miss that I didnt stop her. He came out again at 50yrds broadside and stopped I got a good range on her, felt confident, put the pin on the sweet spot and let the mathews burn, a small branch got in the way making a noise and making her duck and another arrow sailed over a set of shoulders...she jumped then walked off, having no idea there was even an arrow flying her way...it would have been perfect had that branch not been in the way...didnt even deflect the arrow at all...Turned out the weather cleared and I wish I brought my camera hahah oh well thats hunting....
10/2 I ended up hunting behind the house again hoping for the big 6...I sat in the crotch of the tree but wish I used my climber, just not super confident in it yet. I decided to use the Mathews this day because I would be leaving later and didnt want to miss an opportunity. I moved a little after sitting in the crotch and having seen nothing, I got a little farther into a draw where I figured the deer would be coming out of. I turned around only to see a doe and fawn about 30 yrds from the tree I was originally in, but thats ok I had no interest in shooting one that had a baby along. Those would be the only deer I saw that morning. I had lunch and packed up for my journey home.
On the way back I saw tons of deer, They are moving really well it seems this year and the numbers are great. I stopped at one more spot and glassed the field, I have taken a few deer here in the past and its usually a great spot, not having any corn planted near it this year I figured I was in good shape. I noticed a yearling doe laying in the middle of the clover and thought what the heck, lets stalk this thing. I managed to get within 40yrds before it stood up then another 5-10 before it bounded away...made for some fun anyway...ended up seeing another couple on the way back to the car but it was too dark and I needed to get back to my family...I wouldnt hunt again til the night of 10/8/12, which with any luck and cooperation from my little boy, should be a fun time.
In a giant tree no stand with the recurve

You've been busy!
-
ya was a busy 4 days, not much to show for it but was a great adventure, now I will hopefully get a good hunt in with my son on his first trip out ever, we will see how that goes, he is just a little guy...next weeks muzzleloading should be a little easier with him, they wont have to be as close haha
-
That was a fun read man , thank you for taking the time to tell us all about it ;D
-
great story\,and though you didn't harvest a deer sounds like a great hunt good luck BP season
-
What a time you had that crouch must make for a sore hind end ; Boy you got to keep an eye on those rubs ::) ;D
-
I stood the whole time in the crotch of the tree so it wasnt too bad
10/8
Checked a trail cam at one of my spots, its 200 acres of oaks in the adirondacks, the goal today was to set up a ground blind and hunt out of it with my 3 year old son and my bow...a daunting task. We got the blind set up this morning and brushed in, my trail cam had acted weird and seemed to take a picture every minute for the past week or so...surprised its still alive, I set it to video mode so hopefully that works properly but i doubt it, might have to send it back :( we got to the spot around 5:30pm i figured that be the best for a toddlers first hunt, we had candy bars, video game, and video camera in hand...made a little hunting video, but unfortunately nothing showed, it was still a memorable hunt. Sometimes I am amazed at how great my son is, other times he is still a 3 year old haha
-
Good stuff...
-
It's great that the little 1 can stay quiet for so long. Good that you take him, he'll be a great hunter 1 day. ;D

If I could hunt them with a rock I would haha, I know it happens just stinks that I let it happen, especially with the new bow ugh...Im debating on what stand to hunt tomorrow, the first one isnt the easiest to get to in the dark but I have several day time pictures of deer there, only 1 yearling 6 point though...the other spot is easy to get to but not much on the daytime photos, I am sure however that it might have changed...Ill probably hunt the easier one in the morning and the other Ill mark some reflective tacks tomorrow and hunt it weds morning, maybe Ill draw some blood finally
-

well, I havent updated in a long time, been working and being a family man, trying to squeeze hunting in there. I hunted the fingerlakes once since my last update, had a unicorn crotch horn grunting all over the hill, might actually have video to post of that at some point. That evening saw one of the biggest bucks I have ever seen. We were walking out and a stopped and looked at a mock scrape that I had made on the way in to find a track larger than my hand. Suddenly a doe came flying out of no where and the buck was on her tail. His body was the size of a mule deer, over 300lb live weight...On top of his head looked like an arm for a main beam but we couldnt see his tines in the dark timber, All we knew was he was huge, Booner status....
The ran around us and I dropped my climber and pack off my back, knocked an arrow and got ready, they stopped suddenly infront of us at 70 yards...The buck was no where to be seen...I grunted, nothing, I snort wheezed and the doe snapped her head at us...I said "where is he?!?!" Suddenly the do twitched and began running full speed again and the buck came flying out from behind a little hill at 40 yards...He was coming right at us and we couldn't see him...then they were gone....
Since then my friend saw another large buck over 160" in the same area, and has passed on a couple 120"-130" bucks in hopes of shooting one of the giants...
I had a 6 point come in at 50 yards and got him to turn with a grunt, but turn back around with another :-\
I have spent a little time at camp, seeing tons of bucks sign, and a buck or two...but not shots...our camp has seen 13 different bucks, 2 are spikes and the others are racks...and there are some we havent seen yet but have seen the sign...There were also 6 completely different bucks shot in our area but another group, 5 were smaller 4points - 6 points which I wish they would have passed considering some of the deer they have on camera and know the inventory 100"-180" bucks.... but some of us are greedy...
I managed to get a couple trail cams up to camp this year for the first time, got a picture of a spike we have seen, and moved the cam to another spot where I got a picture of a stud...
I managed to get a good friend up to camp, he has never hunted or been to a camp before. I got him into archery this year, and he loved camp. He is really excited to get his license and come up to hunt next year, he might have found us some bowhunting property in his home state of New Jersey so I am pretty excited to go down and video his first bow kill!!! He will be pumped I am sure....We swung by a property on the way back from camp and ended up seeing 7 deer at last light only got a good look at 3 flat tops and didnt see the others till it was too dark...the does would have been easy to shoot but the property owner with her doe tags was unavailable so I elected to pass....
Here are a few pictures...

Nice man ! Sure hope you get one of the bigguns ;D ;D
sucks, my season is pretty much done up there unless I get lucky...I hope my dad or pop tags one of them, I would not enjoy seeing another member not in our camp shoot one of them. We work hard to get them and havent connected...
-
he really loved it, he mention on facebook that he has a new appreciation for hunters and realized it is a science and an art, and not guaranteed...
You guys think that big one is 3 or 4...I wouldnt put him passed 4 at all, if he makes it through he will be unbelieveable next year... and if everyone would hold of on the 1-2 year olds we would have many more like him even though there seems to be a decent amount like him some a little smaller and some bigger... wish I could just hunt hard there. Do to such a low doe population they are hard to get on with them moving constantly
-
Forgot some parts of the story :o :o :o
My Grandfather was sitting in "DPW" At "the flow" and see a flicker of something, glassed it to see something very strange that he figured was a bear...so he kept looking and saw 2 of them...They stood up...A bull and Cow moose then walked 75 yards in front of him and stood in the river.... ;D I love it up there...
Another day while I wasnt there, they were doing a drive and one of the watchers saw 2 giants jump clear over the dirt road right on eachothers tails one right behind the other, at 150 yards he said they were giants with tall heavy white racks...looked like brothers, my assumption was they were fighting and the second one was running the first off...he never even had a chance to shoot.
-
Great update Jon... ;D Sounds like you have been busy..
-
Ya, wish I could connect with some deer though
-
Nice report, thanks for sharing. Nice pics too.
-
You will one day when you have more time.....Life is a balance when the kids are small....gets easier when they get older.........or you could just be like I was and take a week and go..... 8) 8) 8)

sounds like a hell of a hunting time for you and your friend. Great that you got him started in the sport as well as willing to show him the ropes. not many around that are willing to have what I call a tagalong (first year or two hunter) Just a great way to spend time and experiences.

I would have a tag a long pretty much every day, some days would be harder but if I could I would....especially my son, he will be an amazing hunter if he stays on the track he is, no doubt he will be better than I
-
Sounds like you have your priorities straight. Good things come to those that wait. Your due. It will happen.

Well, Guess I will update, my southern hunting was a bust this year, saw some nice deer just couldn't connect. The last time I went I only deer, took a crack shot at one and missed, my friend connected with one and we ended up losing it after about a mile track she dried up so we are hoping it was a "dead zone" hit with no vitals. Headed up to camp the last weekend of rifle in Northern Zone as a last minute decision, it was just Dad, Maddog, and myself hunting out of camp and the conditions were pretty nice. I saw 3 deer the last weekend, a Spike, a Rack, and a smaller buck. It was a great weekend to get up there and spend with dad.
I had not shot at the rack as I only saw his head in the pines at about 200+yards and then he was off, figured it was the one my grandfather saw in that area but who knows, the smaller buck I saw on the way out of camp and dad drove right passed it as it was staring at us driving by, I couldnt get him to stop to get out and try to stalk him but such is life.
My rifle season ended sort of bitter sweet, I got a buck and it was at camp in the ADKs so I was very happy, only guy to get one at our camp this year. We saw 16 different bucks I believe, mostly really big ones the bitter part comes from me shooting a 1 year old spike, although I am very happy to have the meet to feed my family as I am running out, I normally would have elected to pass. I have a few pictures of the Spike on trail camera and dad had seen him in velvet and hard horned right before the season started, he was then only seen 2 times at night. We hunted the area he had been living in but had not seen him all season...until the last weekend, all he had to do was make it through 1 1/2 days and he was home free for the year...that was until I saw him.
We were doing the "Tunketts Handle" drive, It is a series of Ridges and valleys that breaks into a couple wet areas and hardwoods, The last ridge drops down steep to the river with a road between the river and ridge. Every year we see nice bucks here, I shot a nice 2 y/o 8 there a few years back and right before I got him had seen a bigger chocolate horned 3 y/o. This year I saw a 2 or 3 y/o 10 in sept there and got that picture of the giant 4 y/o and that spike.
With only having 3 of us I decided that the best plan was to have maddog go up inside a valley and have dad between the river and the ridge as they tend to run down it and cross. I was going to walk in between and on the ridge with the wind at my back. We dropped Dogger off and dad took me down the road to where I was going to start then he went back towards dogger and parked, got out and went on watch.
I started my drive seeing plenty of tracks going everywhere, I had a good feeling jsut like everyone else. I completed the "push" but saw nothing, met up with Dogger and walked out and headed towards dad, figuring there were no deer in the area we just had a conversation on our walk to dad. We met up with dad told him about the tracks and headed back down towards the truck. Dad looks down at the river and says "I'm telling you, those buggers just go down in the 'tags' and lay their all day."
As soon as that got out of his mouth, I looked down by the river and there was a deer standing in the "tags" looking up the ridge at us. I said "There is one right there! There's a deer!" I pulled up the Model 70 .280 and couldnt see antlers well through the tag alders, but was sure it was a buck. I kept looking as the deer stood like a statue. I zoomed my scope in (meanwhile dad is watching me and Dogger is ready as backup) Then I saw the base of his antlers and the tip of one about 9" above on the left side dad saw me grab my sling, having told him about an issue I had with the sling catching on my bolt, and he knew I was going to shoot. Off came the safety as I settled the crosshairs on the deers chest. A loud crack echoed down the river as the deer went 3' straight down! I hooted in excitement as Dad and Dogger both said at the same time "Nice shot Jonnie!" I ran over and gave my dad the biggest hug, the Dogger. It had been a long journey this season and I finally got my buck on the last weekend. I said to dad, "this might be the happiest I have ever been to shoot a spike," he said he was happy for me and once again it was great to be there when I got one. My dad has been with me when I have shot several deer, each time is great and all I think about is the next time I hope I see him shoot one. Then the work began, I had to walk around a small inlet to get to what was like an island that the deer bedded on, I got over to him and had to drag him across ice while balancing on a log then up a 70' incline hill haha well worth it! This are is on a bucket list of spot I want to shoot deer, was not quite across the river so it doesn't count :(
So although I didn't get more than two deer this year, I am very happy with the ones I did get. My family has food, I filled some tags, and I learned/had fun along the way. My dad and I always say, the last weekend is one of the best times to be up to camp, of course he and I are usually the only ones there so that doesn't hurt ;D
Wish dad got a pic of the whole body, it was a good size yearling

Can't wait to get my son out more, seasons will surely get better from here out as long as he is in my life.
By the way...thanks for calling me frenchie hahaha

When boiling it don't leave it in to long... Boil it for a while take it out clean it... Let it cool and do it again... Watch the teeth, they will fall out... You can strain the water with a window screen to catch them... After it drys just super glue them back in and than whiten....

I made those 3 logs and probably used MAybe 3 T or so and that was a few lbs. you can take steak and pound it out and coat it well on the top side you can see it when you do it on steak and other meats, just dust it on well to cover the one side and rub it in, shake off excess then roll it up like a cigar tightly and then do the plastic, you can turn flank steak or skirt steak into fillet
-
3T? Teaspons or Table spoons?
-
Sweet bud!
-
3T? Teaspons or Table spoons?
Tablespoons, I just kind of eyed it, with this I figured a little extra would be good, with regular whole unground meats a nice coating will be sufficient
-
Cool video....interested to see part 2 :D
-
well I say he needs to just cook the stuff and give it all to me......I will hire you....looks good.....and I hate cooking so when do you serve

Yep waiting for the sequel... ;D
