Title: Northern Maine Rug Steak
Post by: BearHunter60 on Sep 13, 2011, 03:02:30 PM
So after only two nights in the stand I pulled it off. To make a long story somewhat shorter, after driving 9 hours up to Maine I decided to shoot my bow and make sure my sights were still on. Unfortunately i decided to use on of my practice arrows that i had the nock break off the week before and I re-glued it on. Well as I went to release the arrow the nock broke off and the arrow dropped down causing me to pretty much dry fire the bow. When I did that my bow string came completely off the cams and parts of my bow went flying through the air. Needless to say I came pretty closed to having a very nice PSE lawn ornament. But after using some tie down straps we managed to suck the limbs in enough to get the string back on. Two days later i was in the stand with my video camera and camera arm on the tree ready to go. About 45 minutes before dark I saw the bear come up from behind the bait so i flipped open the screen on my camera. I took the shot and buried a Spitfire followed by a lighted nock right behind his shoulder. The bear ran off the bait and only went about 30 yards. All was well in good until I looked at my camera and realized i never hit the record button!!! Sooo depressing I didn't get this great moment on camera but still got the recovery on camera and got some pics. I didn't end up weighing it but i was guessing it to be around 160-180lbs. While i was at the camp one of the guys in my group got a bear around the same size as mine and 3 other guys got bear that were from another group. Overall great hunt and felt good to get back into the woods. Now just to sit and wait for deer season without going crazy.

Great job!  What outfit did you hunt with?

I went with Nesowadnehunk Guide service. Great group of people and possibly the best week of food ive ever had. 8 out of the 9 people I was with saw bear and 5 of us shot bear. My dad saw bear almost every night in the stand but was holding out for a real big one. They also had boat rentals that were included in the price to go fly fishing for brookies during the day before hunting.
