Wolf for the book!
« on: Sep 20, 2005, 02:15:37 PM »
Dad shot a wolf on sunday!!!! It's going to go BC Book! The taxidermist said that it will dry over 17" and it will definitely make the book. He's going to get a full hide mount with the mouth open. Taxidermist also said he can count on one hand the number of wolves he's done over 100 lbs and dad's went 102. Huge. It's going to be a great mount. The fur was really nice too, no rubs or anything. Taxidermist said the holes won't matter he can fix them.
Dad was moose hunting from the treestand in 7-24 till about 9am then decided to take a walk. He got about 75 yards from the stand and these 4 wolves came loping down the trail right at him :o The first 2 jumped out of the way and the third one stood still long enough for dad to take him. The last wolf in line was all black but by the time dad jacked in another shell he jumped out of the trail too. He said it was about 4 seconds between the time he saw them and the time they were gone. That fast. Dad hit him right under the throat and it came out the shoulder. Got him from about 25 yards!
I've got some pics that will follow soon.

They do get bigger than that PGKris. I don't take my wolves to a taxidermist, I tan my own as do most of my wolf hunting buddies. I didn't take you (dad included) as wolf hunters. They can be alot of fun. Welcome to the other side. I think the ultimate for me is hunting grizzly with a bow. Congrats on a fine wolf ;D

We never really were or are "wolf hunters" exactly. It's kind of an incidental but I can definitely see me trying for one to top dad's ;)

Never thought of measuring my timberwolf skull until I read it here  ;D  (incidental kill while elk hunting) so being an official Buckmasters Scorer here in Manitoba, got my measuring tools out and got 18 inches...his length is 7 feet 2 inches from nosetip to end of tail. After skinning, his carcass looked like that of a MB whitetail.
I guestimate he weighed close to 140 lbs EASY.
Not too many around here. It was the first one I had seen in over 20 years of hunting.
Makes for a unique topic of conversation around here. (from non-hunting and hunting friends alike)

Do you guys need tags to harvest wolves in your hunting areas? Or are they considered a predator like coyotes? Here in Montana theres a big wolf battle going on, but they are actually talking about starting a season on them. Post some more photos ;D

In Manitoba you can shoot a wolf if you have a big game licence, but you don't have to tag it.

No tags, just a hunting license. But you can only shoot 3 per year (Good luck seeing that many)

Long time no MHF. Pics:

That's a debate I'll side with the greenies on. Let them re-establish. You killed em off, you let em come back. To hell with the ranchers. IMO. No fighting here!
