How many hrs on stand to see a deer?
« on: Oct 21, 2011, 02:38:16 PM »
I know there are multiple factors. But I'm curious as to see how long it takes average people to see a deer while hunting. On TV they see one every time they go on stand.

I have several stands and last year it took me all year to see just one (1) deer. This year I am seeing deer almost every night, true I think they are all called Bambi. lol

Be patient and do lots of scouting. I grew up on a farm and that is where I still hunt, so I plan to put my stands back in the same spot each year unless I find something that tells me different. If you have a trail camera get it out early, I start in April to get ready for Turkey season.

Look for Trails, Old Rubs, ect. anything that might help you pattern their movement. Find a food source, something that will draw them to that area. I have 2 of my stands looking on Apple trees and I have one up in the Beach Nuts and another watching a grow up field next to Oak Trees.

This is what I look for in a trail.

If you put up a stand make sure it blends in. Here is a picture of my Tripod

And down below is a couple Apple trees

depends where you hunt and if you know deer are there in my opinion, i just started hunting close to home which is archery only and i can watch a field thru my windows of my house and see 7 deer a night, i can go in the bush where i muzzle and rifle and go a few days without seeing a deer. the field across the road from my house has winter wheat seeded in it and is starting to sprout, i watch them every night, starting at 5, they are so comfortable on that field that they are laying down, then again, there is no hunting pressure here, not many archery hunters here, where i gun hunt, lots more pressure, the deer are way more aware. a week to me seems like a long time not to see a deer, but i guess it all depends on where you hunt
