.22-250 for deer
« on: May 31, 2009, 11:55:48 AM »
I bought a 22-250 for coyotes and for deer hunting, I also started to reload because I didn't like what I was finding on the selves.

I'm using 50gr v-max's for the dogs, but any recommendations on a bullet for deer, I'm thinking about 55gr trophy bond bear claw. But anyone who hunts with a 22-250 what are you using?

(I know most of you think that a 22-250 is too small, but I know a few guys who use them and they're  not novice's)

A friend is an NRO' and has culled hundreds of deer over the years for various reasons and says 60 grn partitions work the best all around.

i have a friend that uses a 22-250. I thought he was nuts at first too but has dropped them right in their tracks including a 145" 9 pointer weighing well over 200lbs

The 22-250 should be fairly close to the 223 balisticly. My uncle has dropped deer with the 223 with no problem. For his gun and my girlfriends new 223 we are using 55grain spbt's I don't think you need anything special for deer. But for the coyotes we got varmint granades, haven't hunted with them yet. I would't hesitate to shoot a deer with that 22-250, shoot a gallon jug of water and see what happens.

Winchester has a big game load that is 62 gr.  I read one time that a 22-250 is harder hitting than a 30-06 because all the foot lbs of energy stays in the deer instead of blowing out the back side. Make sense to me. I have personally dropped 200 lbs deer in there track with the 250 but you should still choose your shot. I would never recommend a shoulder shot on any deer with the 22-250.

Just don't plan on coming to Wyoming and using it as your deer/antelope gun.  You might find you will be instructed to

It will probably do the deed just fine with the right bullet and a good shot but it might not have the knock down power on a marginal shot. Bear claws are great bullets but I don,t know how a 55 grainer would hold up to a shoulder shot it,s hard to imagine it not disintegrating at that velocity and hitting hard bone. I,m a firm believer in shootin what you,re comfortable with but I would definitely try to wait for a perfect broadside shot to minimize the chance of hitting large bones in the quarters. Definitely wouldn't,t recommend it for mulies or any larger game. With that said it will probably work fine on whitetails as long as you have good shot placement. It,s not what ya shoot em with it,s where ya shoot em. Good luck this season let us know how it works out for ya.

Oh Boy! another excuse for a new rifle ;D. I don't have any plans to leave Canada to hunt for deer, I know in Alberta you have to use a .23 or larger for deer, but if I'm going to travel then I would have the $$$ to buy another rifle to hunt with, and I wouldn't mind afew more choices of calibers to hunt with. I bought this gun because I wanted to hunt for coyotes besides deer.
