North Bird Hunting
« on: Oct 04, 2021, 08:57:05 AM »
Well, I put in 2 days  on the 25th & 27, and again a full day on Saturday.  Based upon the birds we were seeing this summer, I figured we would crush them like last year in the beginning.  On the 25th I got 3 (2 with one shot which is always cool), none on the 27th, and Saturday we had 3 fly across the road.  Chased one 100 yards into the woods before I shot him doing his best roadrunner impression.  I was told a long time ago by an older guy, that if there are mushrooms in the woods, the birds don't need the gravel.  Gentleman was around 85 years old so I've gone with that for the past 20 years.  People we ran into, along with the people at the gates, have said the birds have been scarce, but will be everywhere once we get a frost.  Anyone else seeing the same thing?  I never hunt Columbus Day weekend, so a week off before I go back, and then a moose hunt on the 25th.

Very interesting about the shrooms, nothing to speak of here in southern Maine either. Makes sense with all this rain. Gotta love old guys who actually have knowledge and are willing to teach younger generations things besides why did the chicken cross the road jokes.  Need some of that on here!   ::) :P Congrats on getting out.

Congrats on the moose, as said, that should be fantastic eating.  Shot one with a friend a few years ago that dressed at 824.  Found out a few months later is was either 13 or 14 yrs old.....should have turned the whole thing into burger and sausage

First week can be hit or miss, a lot of leaves and high grasses. I’ve noticed the abundance of mushrooms this season, I don’t know if it affects bird behavior in any way. Birds get gravel year round, the roads also attract birds because of the grass/edge they create. I went out yesterday with a buddy who drives at break neck speeds and limited out at noon, must’ve seen 10 total. Any given day could be good or bad for bird IMO
