6 weeks work, over in 2 days

So, I've been spending the majority of my time scouting/bowhunting mule deer since August. I had two bucks on my hitlist, about 2 hours driving apart. One I dubbed the Muskrat buck (after the drainage he lived in), the other was the Yellowcake buck (self-explainitory name). The last two days of bow season I never saw the Muskrat buck, so I went out after Yellowcake, even though I never saw him for 5 weeks. Rifle season finally opened Monday. Between glassing Sunday night and hunting Monday morning I saw 20 different bucks, but nothing more than an average 4 pointer. Midday I found this buck bedded in the bottom of a ditch. Can't find deer like this road hunting! A good 4 point, but not what I was after.
Onward I went, and setup on a knob overlooking a bunch of small draws with a pond at the bottom. Saw some more small bucks and a bunch of does. Right at dark a big buck came out of a draw about a half mile away. I only had a few minutes of shooting light left, so I grabbed my gun and started running. Ran hard enough i puked on the way. Got to where I thought I might get a shot and peaked over a hill. There stood a bunch of antelope at 100 yards. They took off and so did the buck. He went right back in the same draw he came out of. Que the nightmares!
The next morning I walked to a different knob in the dark overlooking where he went to hide. As it started to get light I saw a buck feeding 100 yards below me, but it wasn't him. As it got light I looked up to the head of the draw and saw 2 more bucks. It was still too dark to see the horns, but I kept watching through the spotting scope. The buck got an itch by his flank and when he turned his head his antlers almost hit the ground! I couldn't make a stalk, so I had to wait til they bedded. While I was waiting a pickup and two 4 wheelers drove within 100 yards of them and never saw them. Yet again road hunting doesn't get you the big one! After that it was a long stalk, a short belly crawl through the cactus, and a 250 yard shot in his bed. 30 inches wide, 19 inches tall. Had the body of a small cow elk! Taxidermist figured he was 6 1/2 years old. Probably the biggest buck I'll ever get a chance at, and I did it all public land DIY style!
