Never needed to trim them, just chew on the tape to soften it. The hard part is getting the bend just right without the call being squeaky. I've tried a bunch of different ones, and the Quaker Boy Nasty Old Hen is only one that I can do everything on: purrs, clucks, cackles, yelps, cutts and can even manage a decent gobble; been getting better with the gobble, the jake I called in out in Ohio answered my gobbles. My turkey mentor, who has won his share of contests, said if you find a call that works good stick with it and buy a bunch.

I tried the plastic framed ones and didn't like them, never broke one. ;D

The forecast doesn't look like you'll get any sun either. It's not supposed to rain fortunately though. Good luck today, hope they're vocal for you.

Thanks Steve. One gobble way off behind me, stopped but only heard an owl hoot, may have been a call. Deer ran by at 6ish, 40yds.

Found one gobbling, too far for the blind. Hiked in, set up, had one or more
close answering. Heard drumming, looked right and saw a real nice tom, came by at 25 yds, couldn't turn.

Damp, drizzly with low clouds again but the scouting paid off. Set up on a bench above a steep drop at first light, a nice "turkey funnel" that I finally got wise to using to my advantage after seeing birds travel here. Didn't hear anything but the one gobble walking in. Figured I'd give it till 8, around 7:30 while surfing on the phone I heard a putt(not alarm), they do that when thet see the deke sometimes. Pulled down the face mask, grabbed the bow and hit record just in time to see 2 jakes about 30 yds out, they had been behind a big maple. Videoed for 8 minutes, here's the best part(click):

Decided to check out some other spots figuring there weren't many hunters out this week with the weather. Called from a good overlook and heard one across the valley in the fog. Too long a hike to be chasing gobbles with the blind, opted for the 3d camo. Got over there and didn't get any responses; wasn't happy with my call getting squeaky, a little bend fixed it. Went further in and heard a bird down the ridge, got closer and he was gobbling on his own; was able to get close with a small knob in the way. Didn't chance putting the decoy out but wish I had, set up behind a large pine so I could draw. He was coming with some light calls; I heard him drum a couple times and got ready. For some reason I looked to my right and there was real nice tom, probably one of the nicest I've seen while hunting. He came in slient from behind me and walked parallel 25 yds below me and around the knob towards the other tom. The deke might have brought him in front of me; I figure he was the first bird I went in after. I waited and called lightly for an hour, then backed out to try it there another time with the blind for a long sit. There is a nice open flat in some pines at the end of the finger ridge, good strutting zone and a nice roosting spot. 8)

I hate photobucket, took forever to download after a couple error messages and then it's missing almost 2 minutes at the end ::)

Sitting in the chair with the cam on my knee puts the cam at the right level for the opening in the blind.

Uploading the end separately rather than doing the whole thing over; one jakes puffs up and shakes of the rain. 8)
