Mountain Lion track???
« on: Mar 29, 2012, 04:27:32 PM »
So a buddy of mine and I have a camp in the southern ADK's. We were going in to put some cams out to see how the deer are doing after the easy winter and some early scouting. now we were about 6 miles away from the nearest house or blacktop road going back in to were we hunt. Now its a dirt road that was a little soft in spots but not really muddy. We came across some tracks i didnt really recognize and took a quick pic. I wanted to do some research on the tracks before i started trying to figure out what it was. Now i know its not a bear, its close to a wolf but it isnt. I know DEC says there are no mountain lions in NY but i think its BS. So here it is, just wanted to share it and see what people thought. Hopefully some one from cougar country takes a look and give me there thoughts.

Definitely not a Mt Lion...   There tracks are round and claws would not be showing.....  Looks like a very large canine track...

You are on to something there ; Fish & Wildlife going to come out POINT BLANK and LIE about stuff like that.
They don't want people knowing the truth about that kind of stuff . Just like here in NEK of VT. like 4 yrs. ago
farmer shoot a confermed   "WOLF"  after his cows . The fish & Wildlife denied they knew they, Were here they
   always talked about releasing them

As raquettedacker said the nails wouldnt show on a cat! And the pad is too wide! Check out your housecats paw! A mountain lion or bobcat is the same! Paw will be almost perfectely round and the track wouldnt be as deep cause they try to step very light and danty! CATFOOTED! ;)

Absolutely canine of some sort

I emailed the pic to my brother and called him. It has him stymied too. His first thought was not one that that had occurred to me, a lynx. I didn't know until he informed me that a lynx's track can be as big or bigger than a mountain lion. He's going to pass it along for other more analysis  ;D. The only thing that has me second guessing that it's a cat is the lack of a third lobe at the heel. Still going with cat though.
