AUSTERLITZ -- A 59-year-old Hillsdale man was found dead in the woods Sunday from an accidental discharge of his 12-gauge shotgun, police said.

A hunter found Randolph Seifert of Route 23, and formerly of Great Barrington, Mass., at 3:30 p.m. lying dead at the base of a tree that had a tree stand in it, said Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison Jr.

Seifert went hunting Saturday in the woods off Route 71 near Route 22. Police initially believed he died of a heart attack. However, further investigation showed Seifert had climbed into the tree stand and placed the shotgun on a hook in the tree through the trigger guard.

Harrison said it appeared that the hook struck the trigger, discharging the 12-gauge shotgun. Seifert was struck in the upper part of his body, Harrison said. The weapon's safety was not engaged.

Harrison said the death appears to be accidental, however the investigation is continuing and an autopsy is scheduled for today at the St. Peter's Hospital.
