Warts, really?  You have seen this before?  I have never seen a deer like this before...I hope that is all it is and not tumors...

The King my buddy caught this morning weighed in at 36 Lbs even, 42 inches and 27 1/2 inch girth...big ole female Chinook...he took it to the taxidermist today...expensive year for fishing...it will be interesting the size of the fish caught in the river, there should be a bunch of 40+ pounders...

Interesting stuff oneshott, never heard of that before...I guess it would be weird walking up on that after shooting it, definitely disfiguring...

Jeff here is the pic of my buddy's fish...when he sent me the pic I thought it was gonna push 40 but he weighed it at the same taxidermist as we weighed the one Cheeks caught on my boat and it was 36 pounds even, 42" long, 27 1/2" girth, the one we got was a male and was 37.2 pounds, 45" and 26" girth...just Huge Kings, really good to see fish getting that big...This hen fish is a HOG!

Well a couple weeks closer to opening day, Spent Friday night with my wife and a couple friends at the Great NY State fair and the Toby Keith concert, what a great show!  Got up this morning and took a ride down to the hunting spot with Cheeks to prep for our new camp, check the trails, and the trail cameras...got a bunch of good pictures, not sure where the Big Bucks went...I finally got a ton of pictures of does with fawns, I love my new Cuddeback Attack IR, the video mode is sweet...we were riding the far west side property line and came across a spot where it looked like something was dragged out of some thick berry bushes, thought it looked weird and then about 20 yards down the trail saw a pretty good sized Bear track...heard they were around but the first good sign we have seen...what a beautiful morning with the fog filling up all the valleys...won't be long and the we'll be quietly sitting with nature waiting to draw our bows...

Pulled all of the cameras and relocated them...put one where I finished the season hunting last year and put another back close to home under some apple trees that are dropping right next to where I shot Turkey Foot last year...Apples around home are dropping like crazy, down south of Syracuse they haven't started yet...

I stopped at Snagger's place and he said the fish were absolutely stacked up. Huge fish too, the ones Dave  and I were holding were 27 apiece, nice fish usually but don't even raise an eyebrow this year. Deposit feel free to ask any questions leading up to the trip. There is really not too many things like it. I hooked one yesterday that jumped over my head about 5 feet from me then stripped of 100 feet of line like it was a casual Saturday swim LOL .

The last set of pics were about 80 yards from there near some apple trees and oaks...There is always a huge scrape right there under that tree so as the season heats up I will get my cam in that spot...we cleared some of the really thick stuff to get into those Oaks, that is where I shot my buck last year...so I shifted a bit early near the apples on the ground...Cheeks camera is at the other end of that trail...Wish I had more cameras... :)

Nice!  Thanks for the offer I can wait... ;D...I will be making that trip sometime, I made the mistake of telling my kids that I would take them to Disney when I retired from the Navy, they are holding me to it everyday...maybe a Christmas gift... :o ;D  Have fun down there Bruce...

That would be one heck of a Christmas gift!

We had a great time. Back in town now and getting ready to fling some arrows and rip some waldo lips.  ;D

Well we couldn't be more ready for opening day...4 stands hanging in scouted out spots...the whole crew is part of the camp, and the new building will go up next week, and just like every year since 2009 coaching youth soccer keeps me busy and not thinking about the woods for a couple nights each week, this hot weather is finally past and fall is in the air again!

Man stopped at Dick's last night after taking the wife to Toby Keith's and the Lightfield slugs were on clearance, stocked up on them, and I also bought a new box of 4-10 to let me daughter shoot...I haven't shot my 4-10 in over 20 years...good combination of noise and no kick to break the young ones in... :)

Just moved two cams from one property to another...found some really good sign, lots of apples and nuts falling, found two fresh rubs and believe it of not we found a fresh scrape...couldn't believe it, the dirt was fresh on top of the leaves and there were fresh track in it, we put a camera on it just to see what is going on there, most of the bucks we had on cam we still in velvet with an exception of a couple that are out...some really fat does around, had two pictures with three nice does all in the view...next time out there will be with bow in hand... :) :) :)

No different piece of property, this is under a hemlock on a side hill covered in briars...out in the middle of nowhere...

Here are a couple pictures, nothing big but some real healthy deer, the second buck has a little piebalding...going on...the third buck has a big chest and body size for his little spikes, I think he may  be Turkey Foots son...

I hung a camera and stand this morning and found a scrape on the way also. It was definitely fresh and the over handing branch was broken in half. Iv never seen a scrape this early but there was no mistaking this one. The prints in it were huge and the cameras but 50 yards away on the same run. Well see on wed when I go in to swap cards.

community scrapes are active all year long and are used by many bucks.  They are great to set up on during the rut and many bucks with by and check them for does and freshen them up.   Sat on one twice last year thats on a funnel first time i saw 5 bucks come and check it out 3 of them freshened it up second time i shot a 10 pointer.

Well the new camp is finally in place, now just some finishing touches over the next couple weeks but it is pretty exciting to have a camp to call my own...There was nothing easy about getting it in place but after about 4 hours of pushing, pulling, winching and maneuvering she is setting in place, now to add some bunks, a woodstove, a sink, a table a couple windows and some lights we will be in business...

We were riding the four wheelers and went down an old trail we made early in the spring...it runs down hill along a really deep gorge...I looked over and they were standing like 10 yards away between me and the gorge, they did not want to go back down in there, it was pretty cool, I actually thought she was gonna charge me...she kept stomping here foot and stepping toward me...she did not want to move, we kept on driving down the trail, turned around and came back up and the one bigger doe bedded down...they never moved...we just kept on and left them alone...I see her Saturday it might have a different outcome...

Crazy Crazy hunt tonight...got off work a little early to hit my stand...brought my four wheeler tonight because my stand is quite a ways back in and mostly uphill and yesterday I was a sweaty mess by the time I got set up.  First hurdle...about halfway to my stand in a wet spot that has been getting worse I buried the wheeler, after trying to get it out for a few minutes my awesome plan had completely backfired, now me and my bow was covered in mud and I was a sweaty mess...so I hiked the rest of the way in.  Decided after yesterdays hunt to move my stand about 30 yards to a different tree, as I finally climbed up to get the stuff I left in the tree out and climbed back down and moved to the new tree.  The tree was set back against some hemlocks for great cover, however, it had a string of poison ivy running up it...I used a stick to pull that off the tree and began climbing...up about 10 feet and I needed to break one of the hemlock branches...bending it with some good force it finally snapped, I took a deep breath as it snapped as a couple brown hemlock needles when right down my throat...there I was gasping for air and hacking and retching in the woods...I couldn't take a deep breath, sounds funny now but it was pretty scary...what a freak thing to happen...I finally climbed down and spend 20-30 minutes trying to clear my airway and coughing and dry heaving...WTH!!!  Finally cleared it for the most part and collected myself, I really was debating whether to hunt of not, I decided to move to another tree about 50 more yards where I saw a deer the night before, no branches to break...finally after about an hour and 1/2 after leaving my truck I was set...about an hour later a pair a grey fox came through and I got some really cool video...then at 6PM a big lone doe worked her way to me...I had the camera rolling and went to full draw as she turned right towards me...it was now or never at that point, her chest looked big through my sight window and I knew I could make that shot, even though I haven't shot a deer with a bow straight on before...I let it fly and red sprayed everywhere...I waited until dark to climb down and there was good blood...about 10 yards past where I lost sight of her she was done...first deer of the year and a crazy hunt that turned out good...

I have one of those cameras, maybe I'll just get the mount. Thanks for the info , and again Nice job!

Thanks...there is a little square bracket that screws on to the bottom of the Camera...and you move a little locking lever to remove it from the swing arm mount...pretty nice...I leave the arm right in the tree if I am going to hunt the same stand, just remove my camera

Nice job HUNT. I love the video. That shot looks wicked long when it's not zoomed in!

Yeah I wished I would have zoomed in more, it happened fast...I paced it off after it was about 25 yards and down hill...hit right where I was aiming, somehow missed the heart but went through lungs mostly her left, my right, exited through rib cage just behind left (my right) shoulder...she only went 70/80 yards...

Ed, Pat shot that 6 point there at the end of gun season last year...

Time to start focusing on some bucks.  One of my hunting spots is loaded with scrapes and I had a cam at the spot that revealed a decent 8 point.  Weather is supposed to start getting a little more seasonable towards the weekend, hopefully will see some increased activity.  Good luck!!!

What a beautiful weekend at camp...we saw a pile of deer, I saw 29 deer on Saturday and today...my stand was a little off from where it needed to be, I moved it this morning for next time.  Most were 50-80 yards away with 2 small bucks, 2 button bucks and one small doe that came within 30 yards that I let walk...I saw 3 monster Toms every sit and they busted me every time, real healthy birds...looking forward to the next trip to camp, she is nice and cozy and we have broken her in well...

So one of the best things that can make a season great is to be part of someones first deer...Our great friend Josh decided a couple years ago he would hunt with us and came out a couple times with his old 30/30, over the next summer he decided he wanted to get into bowhunting, so he set up an old bow and he needed a special sight because he cannot see well out of his right eye, he has a sight where he shoots right handed with his left eye...practiced up and hunted a few times last year with us...this past summer he wanted to get more serious, he joined our club, he bought a four wheeler and got a couple treestands...he has been hunting with us every weekend.  He has passed on a few deer already because he didn't want to shoot a fawn or he didn't want to take a bad shot...this morning he had three bucks come through, and he took the first deer of his life...and it was with his bow...nice six point with a perfect lung shot...the deer went about 60 yards and died right on the four wheeler trail...regardless of how the rest of the season goes, being part of someones first deer has already made it great!  I also think the seed has now been planted with his little son Tanner, he was proud of his Dad!

Back on track, deer #2 hanging...it has been a great season so far, many small bucks have had a pass, haven't only seen a couple decent bucks until yesterdays hunt...I witnessed the Rut in full effect...I took a nice doe Saturday evening in a new stand location so I moved to the spot I finished at late last season...it is fairly open from a treestand and slightly downhill valley and behind me to my right is the 3rd highest point in Onondaga County, it was cold with about 4" of fresh snow overnight and the Temp at 22 degrees I was bundled up pretty good...slow most of the morning...then about 0945 I see two deer running across below me about 120 yards they turn and start weaving up the hill towards me and to my left a bit...I stand up and get my bow ready...(my stand was frozen solid so that was tricky making minimal noise)...I quickly realize that it is a nice buck chasing a doe...then about 50 yards behind them another deer a Bigger Buck...they get about 50 yards downhill to me left as if they are going to make their way past my stand, I shift to get in position for my shooting lanes that way...I have two big trees on either side of me and just forward of the tree I'm in for cover and they are between me and that tree, I hear antlers clash...I look back around the tree and the monster buck starts racking the other big 8...the doe is facing them about 10 yards away from them, they are all around 50 yards...they have a huge stand off, the more dominant buck was cutting off the big 8 with his every move, finally the 8 submitted and the doe wandered off to my left and up...with monster buck in tow...big 8 was following behind, I see the monster buck attempt to mount the doe a couple times, and she would stop and then keep moving up....then I see another deer coming from the same direction, another doe catches up with them and joins the 8 point...now I have a full fledged deer orgy going on...LOL...they keep heading up away from me and walk 15 yards from my 4 wheeler...I could see them all stop and hoped my wheeler would spook them and they would head back down...and the only one that did was the Big 8...he walked back cautiously in his tracks, as he got to the 50 yard mark and I realized he was not gonna take a detour closer to me, I gave a couple bleats, he stopped looked my direction every time but turned and kept walking away...I tried grunting, same results and he was out of sight....I hang my bow back up and sit back down loudly on my frozen viper seat and look to my right and see a deer standing at 60 yards....a little spike...he starts to walk away the other direction so I try to mess with him and bleat a couple times...he fell for it and walked right under me at 20 yards...I snapped a cell phone pic...pretty exciting hunt for sure...still on vacation until the 18th so hopefully I can fill the freezer a little more...

Thanks!

The weather was nice for sure. I could have used sun tan lotion though.  ;D

My mom took a spike horn at high noon yesterday. She made a nice shot as he was chasing a doe pretty good. She shot it with my dad's rifle on the 15th anniversary of his passing. Very fitting...

For the little amount of time I put in the results are more than I could have hoped. All public land deer, and I'm proud of that, a lifetime of scouting and experience, coupled with going where most hunters won't go is the key. One of the few things I can say NY gets right is the public access to fishing and hunting we get to enjoy 8)

So to sum up my 2013 season, we had a blast, I took 4 deer, 2 with a bow and two with a gun, my hunting buddies all did well, Josh got his first deer ever and Pat took two nice mature bucks.  I spent a day hunting with my wife, found a Salmon that took a detour and made it about a mile up into the woods from the Little Salmon River.  We made our new hunting camp and broke it in well...really glad the year is over, I need a break but as always tomorrow I can't wait until next year!

You guys sure know how to do things right, what a great year you had and the camp is awesome. You should have plenty of good years ahead at that camp. Just goes to show you put in the effort, you reap the results. ;D So how's retirement from the Navy?

Chapter One of the Camp will always be the best. It is something to enjoy and share for many years. Over the years put a penny in a jar everytime you say, "remember our first year at camp" and you will be either very RICH or BROKE, but you will always have the camp....hunts2long

Great buck Bog!  And congrats Hunt & co. on a great first season at your new camp! The camera on my phone is dead so pics have been when someone else was around with a camera. I did a lot of watching & learning for the first year at my place- it was a great season, but no great bucks have been taken. We will eat well this winter! My son is coming home 12/15- hope to help him connect in the last couple days of ML. Dad scored on a nice doe last week... for me, the most rewarding hunt ever...

yea man cant complain. 3 family members claimed their first deer this year. and by ash contributing to the freezer filling it took some pressure off me to get it done. not to mention a nice big fat fresh local roadkill i scooped up. anyway.......

this ridiculous amount of snow will not help our crappie spot much  >:(

According to the website, you are correct.

We rented a house on big bay again.  It was a lot of fun biggest we caught was 26" but lots of 22-24".  We had a big storm come through the second day and the fishing was extremely slow after that and a pain to get around as there were 4 ft drifts.  It's was different fishing on a solid 12" of black ice you could see through.  Good luck look forward to the pics and story.

What a great vacation...had to work for fish but we managed to catch them...I caught my personal best Walleye, just under 26", what an awesome fight, it was like setting the hook into a brick...Cheeks caught one just under 28" it was his personal best as well.  Many other fish caught in from 14" to 23"...marked fish daylight till dark but finding a combination to get them to go was tricky...a couple flurries of aggressive fish throughout the day made it worth every minute...all the fish were released to fight another day, except we kept our limit yesterday to bring home...a few pictures from the trip...

So I have been out of the mix for a while due to work commitments out of town...I did manage to get out last Saturday and I took what I learned fishing in Canada to our one and only Chaumont Bay...I wasn't sure what to expect but I stuck to what I learned and let the smaller Perch marks chase the bigger baits...I managed to weed through the Perch and get some Eyes to go...what a great day...I went 2 for 4 on Eyes and got my new PB at 27" and 7 1/2 pounds...I was going to let the big female go but I had got a hook in one of her gills so I decided not to risk putting her back, I am gonna have her put on my wall, I originally had a standard set at 10 pounds + before mounting but she was a beautiful fish and I didn't really want to take her home to eat...what a great day and a great experience as I get better at targeting Eyes...I set up the hunting blind so I could work two rods...good times...

We have the most ice I have seen...it will be interesting to see how long it takes to melt...there was over 36" on Saturday where I was...It took my NILS right down to the handle to punch through...I am starting to think about getting the boat ready though...

Woke up to 39* and a 18mph wind today. wont  be long keeping the snow here. still well over 20" of snow in the woods here. watched a deer walk around the woods skirting our yard and every time it broke through the crust she went almost to her chest in some places. great way to enjoy a cup of coffie in the morning. :)

It hasn't been affecting it over here, I've been in the woods and have jumped the 6 to 8 deer that have been here since fall. The 2 warm ups with rain dropped the snow quite a bit each time.

That is good news, I haven't noticed the normal numbers herded up around here, but that doesn't mean much...there was a ton of food this fall so hopefully it gave them what they needed over this winter...
