Title: 2012 MHF Island Camping Trip
Post by: stka on Jul 20, 2011, 11:11:35 AM
2012 MHF Island Camping Trip to Lake George

I need to get a reasonable head count of how many members are going to make the trip. The number of sites/docks will be set in October. I've already gotten several confirmations, but I will need to know everyone who plans on attending. I plan on reserving the sites for Thursday July 12th through Monday July 15th. I will need to recruit more people to reserve sites, since they are limited to one per person. Wives/girlfriends and kids are welcome. With the amount of interest already I think we'll have to aim to get sites on the larger island. This will also offer some more space so that people with kids or who want to turn in early can have some separation from the main common area.
We will be about three miles from the launch so I also would like to know who plans on bringing a boat and the general size. It will be very helpful to have a few boats transporting people and gear to and from the island. More importantly each site only has a dock for one boat so we need to make sure we have enough docks.
If I could just get a running head count of each member the number in their party and whether or not they are bringing a boat I can get it better organized in advance. I know it's ridiculously far in advance, but it's the only way to ensure I can get it set-up right. If you're not sure who's going to come with you I would round up and just add a "?".

List of attendees counted:

STKA * 19' Cuddy
Bog/MOM * 18'?
Issiah +2 * 18'?
ShipOfFools
Joe Snag ?
Cheeks
Raquettedacker *
Drobs (+1)
eyehi *
Mookie and Mrs.Mookie*

* Confirmed (10/18)
? Uncertain

Everyone that's going to be camping is going to have to PM me first and last name of who's coming so I can preregister and tell you what site # to check in for. I can only list one vehicle per site but I was told we were allowed two, you may have to try to see if they'll let you register the vehicle to the site when you check in. If not I think it's $6 a day to park so it's not that bad anyway.

Directions
Texting your ETA is the best method of communicating since cell service is sketchy on the island.

Day Trippers use this parking spot at the town pier please. There is no overnight parking allowed here though.

Bog & Mom, I have an 18' center console that I can and will bring. If there are too many boat's I can leave it @ home and hitch a ride with some one closer.

That was my plan, to start getting it organized two weeks or so in advance.

Question Steve. If Bog brought his boat for two days on the lake, does he still need to buy the lake usage permit??
I might come out for the day or something, but doubtful for camping.
Title: Re: 2012 MHF Island Camping Trip
Post by: stka on Jul 20, 2011, 10:31:51 PM
Yes, they will still need the lake permit, but they sell some form of daily/weeky permits. No problem coming out for a day trip. We can pick people up at a state access where we met Issiah. It's an easy pick up spot with free parking right on the lake and pretty close. Can't park there over night though.

Does everyone that launches a boat need one of those permits,,even if your boat is registered in NY??

there are some size and HP exemptions....     under 10HP is ok .... there are lots of 15 HP motors with 9.9 stickers  ;)

Seem's cheap enough but NY sure does love it's fee's

Title: Re: 2012 MHF Island Camping Trip

That one isn't the state. It's the Lake George Park Commission saying "if you don't have a house on the lake we don't want you here for a day/weekend". The state says it by not having a public launch on the south basin.

So would a 16ft boat with a 9.9 hp (not 10hp)motor be exempt?
Aww, I guess $11.25 isn't bad anyways.

What island are you guys staying on? I'm speaking from experience when I say you may want to check the docks in advance. Many of the dockspaces are shallow and will not hold larger boats. I'd hate to see everyone reserve spots and get shafted because their dock space isnt appropriate. Smaller fishing boats will be fine, but cabin cruisers etc WILL run into issues.

I'm familiar with several of the docks where we'll be. Our 19' cuddy fits into them OK.

There is a state launch at million dollar beach Steve, next to the beach.  Last I knew it was 10.00 to launch and 10.00 to park in the lot...
Which isn't that bad compared to some places. But still would rather go to places like 4TH where you can launch for free.... ;)

Just not sure if I will be able to leave the wife for a weekend.....I've tried to get away this spring but haven't as yet.  She needs someone around most of the time, as she falls regularly, and to cook for her. She can't stand at the stove or anything for more than 20 minutes...
I do think it would be a blast though....We'll have to see what happens in the next year as far as her health.... :(

Ramrod and Raquette, I'm counting you both as going, just let me know if you find out your not coming for sure. Last weekend the fishing wasn't great, for the few hours we tried. Did keep three Sunday even with the constant east wind.

Of course it's not all about the fishing, especially if it's real hot out. The water temp at the campsite was 78-80*.

It'll probably be your choice if you want to bring the boat. There's places around the sites that you can pull it right up on the shore if you're willing to. That could leave a dock open for another bigger boat. I'll definitely have you reserve a site, when the time comes we'll get it orginized.

I have some pics of the island that I'll post when I get a chance.

It really depends on what we end up with for boats, your 19' would be ideal for helping to get people and gear to and from the island. I'd rather you didn't have to trailer it that far though if it's not necessary. It's a three mile boat ride and it can get choppy on the open lake. The small boats will be able to fish around the islands in the wind, once they're out there.

It's been trailered from Florida to Ontario so that's not a big deal.

I wanted to bump this up top again before it gets much busier on the site. I'm going to need to know who is going and who will be willing to reserve a site. We can only reserve one site per person and I need a decent guess on a total number to know how many sites we need. The rate is about $25 per night, but with up to six people per site the cost shouldn't be very high per person. If you plan on coming and don't see your name on the first post in this thread let me know here or by PM. Anyone willing to make a reservation please let me know and I'll get that list together too. We will need to coordinate the reservations around October 1st.

This is all going down July 2012? I'm hoping to be either working for state corrections or Albany county sheriffs department by then so with either of those jobs I have no clue what my schedule would look like. I would probably make it out for a day though. Definitely too far in advance for me to give a definite answer but I guess it won't matter if I'm not going to need a campsite. Pretty good idea.

I' going to ask everyone to split the site costs evenly so it should be around $30 a head for the weekend. I was also going to have everyone bring their own food and drinks. Anyone who wants to bring stuff to share is obviously very welcome to and appreciated.

I will need anyone interested in reserving a site to get in touch with me. You will need to be able to rent them at 9am (8:50) Wednesday, day after tomorrow. Most sites are already booked, hope we can what we need. Sites are $22 per night and I was going to reserve them from Thursday-Monday. We'll split the cost between everyone who comes so it shouldn't be to bad for each.

I'm booking the second site today. Hopefully Abe is booking the third. There is one more site available (for now) if anyones interested. Three sites will allow us 18 people with six tents not counting day visitors.

Great me too, I made a second account for Heather to book a second site. Hope it works. We'll have the top flat of the island if we get the ones we want. It's a nice big grass/tree flat, plus a lower one on the point with decent swimming access I already booked. We should have docks for four boats since the one I got has two sides. I'm already looking forward to this trip.

Get a metal 5gal bucket that had something nontoxic in it. Thats the hard part...   Get a beer can holder  for cooking chickens....   Lay out a big area of tin foil..Over lay it by making an X than lay more till you have it all filled in.  Place turkey on open full  beer can/holder in middle of foil..  Put bucket over it.. I like to put a big rock on bucket to seal it better...  Place 10 pounds of charcole around bottom of can..  I try to make as even all the way around and stack it...   Lite and wait till coles are done...

I went to my friends after work to hang the time lapse camera. Dropped off a treestand and reseeded the food plot while I was there. By the time I was done it was starting to get dark and I was swarmed by mosquitoes :o. think I even saw a black fly  :-\.

Sure is a great lake to fish....Would have been great to get the group on it to ice fish this year....I'm sure you will do great this summer.

Skeeters and black flies have started Steve...Didn't take long to get water temps to 50 for a hatch some places....Add to that the treatment companies usually start in April most years, so they haven't gotten the chems in the water yet.....could be bad....

The bugs usually aren't bad at all on the islands. Nothing like being in the woods. Worst bugs we get are the black house flies and the occasional horse fly on the boat. Scott you and Tyler have to make an appearance, even if it's just a day trip.

Didn't even occur to me until now, but there's a hotel and a B&B that both have docks too. Rates don't seem real bad either. There are cabins as well but they cost a lot more.

Hotel (next to town beach and launch)

Title: Re: 2012 MHF Island Camping Trip
Post by: stka on Jun 08, 2012, 12:02:10 PM
I need to verify who's planning to attend so I can calculate the price per each. We are allowed a max of 36 people and I believe nine tents. We have 3-4 docks spaces and an areas smaller boats can be pulled up on the shore. Anyone who wants to come out for for either a day trip or to camp will need to plan a time to arrive so someone can come pick them up.
Title: Re: 2012 MHF Island Camping Trip
Post by: stka on Jun 08, 2012, 12:27:08 PM
This is the list I have so far, if there are any additions or cancellations please let me know. That includes if you're bringing someone with you and I see no reason not to with the low number of people planning to attend. There's e a nice swimming area right at the campsites but it is a bit rocky so I would plan on bringing footwear for the water. There is also a day use island that you can walk to from where our docks are. There is also a good mix of open and shade. At the current count the camping cost will be $30 a head for the weekend (Friday-Monday), that doesn't count food, gas, beverages, firewood or additional parking ($6 per night/vehicle after the six we're allowed). If anyone would like to come but doesn't have the gear let us know and I'm sure someone will let you borrow what you need. Please help me get this nailed down as soon as you can to help me get a more solid plan in place. I'm figuring that a few people will bring food to share as I will. This will be a great weekend, I'm really looking forward to it.

We are definite, I just need to nail down the meal plan. Do I plan for 2 and bring a little extra or are we eating as a group and doing a pot luck sort of thing? OR do we do our own meals and plan a Big pot luck thing for 1 night? (Saturday) It doesn't matter to me at all. I have a 2 burner camp chef blind stove I'll be willing to share as well as a 12x12 screen room/rain shelter we can use as community space.

I'm open to any form of food arrangement, we can have fried laker one night unless the bass guys bring back a pile of smallies  ;) or if anyone knows how to catch perch in June  :-\. I can all but guaranty having lakers, but not any other species. It would probably be easiest if everyone plans on having their own food and drinks and just bring a little extra if they like.

I have been cleared to go. Worried about my family though things have been rough lately. Mom wants me to fly but there is no way that is happening(drobs does not do planes). To be honest I am dreading 8 hours in a car by myself and was hoping to bring someone else but that got busted. haha No little red sports car on the trip. I already have to preplan my routes with that so I dont break the front end on it. ::) I was gonna take the Durango but the gas would be a killer. So my mother offered to swap me vehicles which would leave me with a brand new Kia Optima. I will take that plus is has built in GPS. Just hope all the gear fits in it.

That's a good sized boat for the lake, especially for bass fishing ;). You know the area a little now. The launch is about 3 miles north of the island where we were. You early birds can fish the smb or salmon in the morning if tou want. Lakers don't usually get hot for us until 0900 or so. Not that we can't catch them, just not as fast 8).

I'll count your boat as the third it will probably fit well on the second side of our dock. It's a little shallow if I remember right and yours should sit plenty high in the water. We'll figure that out once I get out to check out the dock. I'll bring plenty of bumpers and worse case we'll tie two together, its real sheltered on the two back side docks.

Your boat will be in good company Bog, ours was new in '82 or '84, still catches fish just fine though  8). Like you said the payments are perfect for us, as long as it runs good and floats I'm happy with it  ;).

Space for the tents shouldn't be an issue. I called the site last week and they were fine with three tents per site. Also I think I miscalculated, it's 6 per site so we're allowed 18 on the island. That doesn't include day trippers, just those of us spending the night. If anyone is into snorkleing it's a good area for it right at the sites, mostly rocky bottom and real clear water, always.

Way more smallies in the north basin where we'll be, don't plan on seeing any largemouth. My boat will be trolling lakers most of the time, unless everyone has had enough. But having to cycle people through I doubt that will happen.

I don't think you can get one online. There's a small marina (Dockside Landing Marina) that sells them right on Route 9N after turning off rte 8 in Hague. You can mail order or call to order them from here http://www.lgpc.state.ny.us/formidx.html (http://www.lgpc.state.ny.us/formidx.html)

Parking lot for that marina is tiny and I wouldn't pull in towing a boat, better off to try to pull over on the curb if you can. It's also an on water gas station very close to the island so you can always run over after you launch if you have to.

Do we have the whole island reserved ?

No. We have three of six sites on the island. Two of them are on a large grassy flat on top of the island and the third is a little lower down on the west side but all three are adjacent.

Okay, here's some pics of the island.

NW corner. The lower site is on the right, dock is behind pine in the foreground. The upper two sites are to the left and their dock is the one with the boat docked.

A little more to the left (North). You can see the small gap to the day use island on the edge of the pic.

Day use island on left (no campsites).

Gap

Dock for the two upper sites, a short haul to get the gear up. Note the rock on the right, have to be careful pulling the boats in.

SW side. Lower site on left and you can kind of see the opening on top where the two other sites are.

Same from a bit more East.

SE corner there's a site we don't have in a crevice behind the rock on the right.

ESE dock for that site and a table for the next.

E second site we don't have, third is on the right behind big pines. Other side of gap on edge of pic.

NE Third site we don't have.

Same as above with gap.

Neighboring family wasn't fisherfolk but the son wanted to try, so we took him out for a quick run and got him his biggest fish ever. Putting new comers to the sport on fish is the best part of the sport. Unfortunately it was to short to keep so we gave them a few prefilet ones from earlier to take home  ;).

Money shot, probably fish they got to eat  ;D. Must be the shirt ;).

There are usually two picnic tables per site. There are two outhouses in the center of the island but they are the solar type and the nicest least stinky ones I've ever seen.

I sure do miss that jerky Harrie, last night while pounding beers with teej on the docks lookin for stripahs we had about a 20 min. conversation about how awesome your jerky and Summer Sausage is and how we need to learn how to do it make entire deer out of it. I wish we got more tags up here to do more things with the meat...... You kinda gotta be stingy with it up here. I shared your jerky and some summer sausage with him a couple days after we went out because I am such a gentleman and a scholar ::).

Less than 3 weeks away now. Just about have everything together here. I know we can't bring it from out of state but what's the protocol on Camp fires and wood?
Title: Re: 2012 MHF Island Camping Trip
Post by: stka on Jun 25, 2012, 12:05:05 PM
There are fire places on each site. In NY you can't transport wood more than 50 miles, and you have to self issue a receipt as well  ::). There are some counties where you are not allowed to transport wood out of, and of course my house with all the maple I wanted to use is in one of them (Albany). So unfortunately we will probably have to buy it. As you head east on rte8 there are usually a few houses that sell it roadside and there's also a family that drives around the main campground selling it, I used to have his cell number but can't find it. He said he would meet us at the town launch a mile from the island if we called him, so we didn't have to make the 3-4 mile run back to the campground.

Takes a short time for them to warm to strangers but they are good for the most part.

I got picked when I was 19, I decided to brush it off, guess what? That is a major no no I learned real quick. Sheriff showed up with cuffs in hand after many notices. I litterally lived at the time in my apt. 200 yds. from the courthouse and 300 yds. from the jail. I chose court ;D. I was filling out the paperwork and one of the questions is how many miles will you travel so they can pay mileage so I told the truth and wrote 200 yds. the guy was pissed thinking I was being a DB, I had to point out the window and say that's my house bro. I rode the wheeler over every day 8). I was fortunate enough or unfortunate enough to know people in every case I got picked for and never had to sit through any of it ;D. What did they think that 10 bucks a day was gonna get me anyway? ::)

Just a little over a week left to wait......Thought we may want to not duplicate to triplicate some camp items so I'll start a list.

I have the following to bring.

Wife and Boat.Fishing gear.
2 burner stove, griddle, coffee pot, cooking tools, several pan's, Turkey cooker pot and burner.
Screen tent, 4X4 folding table, several camp chairs.
Usual cooking items, zip locks, paper towels trash bags, foil, dish soap,
I plan to bring a bunch of stuffed quahog's, Steamers, Frito bag tacos and BACON!!!!!!! as community contributions.

Is someone bringing the Oil for the deep fry Steve? And  what about a #20er ?

Hate to post this but I am not going to make it. :( Sorry guys I know I said I was coming but sometimes we cant predict the future. My father has a neurological exam in DC on Friday the 13th. He will also get another cortisone shot in his back. It was supposed to be scheduled for tomorrow but the doctors office pushed it back till next week. Last time I had to pretty much carry him inside and he couldn't walk for 24hrs. This mixed with a busy work schedule my mother cant handle it all herself. Hope you guys understand I truly was looking for to it.

68 meatballs in the oven doing their thing now. Had a problem with the propane and propane accessories though. The 8' hose and tee work fine but the 5' hose was the wrong style. Returned it to get another 8' but they didn't have any with the right fittings any size. Tried two more stores with no luck. Will try another store or two tomorrow.

Shouldn't be any problem with the young group, but we only have the one boat so it'll be tough to get them all out fishing at the same time if they want to go. Do you have another tent or something, it will be very tight if you all try to use the one.

LOL Nothing will surprise me with this crew steve. It's a done deal, I just went and put the downriggers back on and Laker gear back in the Compartment. I can load half my crap in the boat for the ride and won't have to move it twice whe we get there too. It's no big deal at all. I promise. 8) 8)

Shouldn't be any problem with the young group, but we only have the one boat so it'll be tough to get them all out fishing at the same time if they want to go. Do you have another tent or something, it will be very tight if you all try to use the one.

Yes we have a small tent we can bring   see you guys soon

Ouch! What'd ya hit?

Backed into a rock not 5' out of the dock, front of the boat hadn't cleared the dock yet. Abe can tell you this too, but we had gone over the exact same spot many times already. I don't open my eyes under water so it took twenty minutes to get the spare prop on. Bending out the lock washer tabs took me a while with the distorted view.

Great pictures Steve..  To bad about the prop...
Not a big deal, that's why there's always a back up in the boat. Will drop this one off to be fixed tomorrow. I was more worried when the temperature gauge pinned out and the smoke was coming out of the engine cover. That was the tow back to the dock. But once the temp dropped a bit the water pumped fine and no more heat issues. Did have to have Bog tweek the idle after that one though.

Sorry to hear that! It happens.............

Checked the oil and trany fluid before the trip, but spaced out on the coolant in the truck (The one thing I know leaks slowly ::)). Stopped at Fish307 for lake passes and my truck was way over it's happy temp. Gallon of water at stewarts fixed that one fast and easy.

Sorry to hear that! It happens.............
One of the few things I have going for me is that I don't stress out over that type of stuff. It happens and everything can be fixed, just a matter of how much time and money it'll take.

I'll admit I was a little worried after the over heating. Once the temp dropped a little I checked the oil which looked nice and clear, hit the key quick and the engine turned over. Once I knew it wasn't seized I figured I could get her running again, especially with Bog there as well. Very, Very glad he brought his boat. Would have been a long paddle job in our boat  :o. When I finally got to try to start the boat again it wasn't kicking over but the temp dropped like a rock from the water pump turning off the starter, that was a big weight lifted too. Was just flooded so I opened the carb gave Bog the ether and right back to happy boat. The smoking temp did mess up the idle speed somehow so Bog tweaked it while I watched the tachometer and got it from 500 back to the 900rpms it's usually running.

Great pic's Buddy. Amy is working on our's.

We again had a great time in NY. If you guy's would get rid of the Yankee's I could like it lamost as much as Maine......almost. ;)
We had a great time too. Glad we didn't have to spend to long fishing to get a few fish. Left a lot more time to relax around the site. As far as the yankmes go, I think New Hampshire needs a team  ;D.

I think we could have gotten by all weekend with the tools in my pocket...... ;D
We could have, but your leatherman may have taken a beating getting that lock washer off.

You do realize that is the second pic of me being towed in a boat in about five weeks  ::). Also the second rock I hit in as much time. The last rock wasn't the prop though had the boat teetering on it  ;D.
