This is the Offical North South Sign up thread-----This is also the B/S thread..
If you were in lastyear your all signed up---check the list for your name,
This is also a roll call---please give your DMU where you live,,
Please read the rules---they are simple and clear---------

RULES
North South Rules
All entries Must be registered with Myhuntingforum.com with a name.
All New York state regulations and Laws apply.
All deer must be killed in New York State.
Doe's and button bucks are 1 point
Bucks are scored by the number of points they have.
Spike horns must have one 3" spike other points must be 1" on racks same as NYS law.
Anyone that Tags out with Bow ,Blackpowder and Regular Gunseason will recieve 2 additional points.
Everyone that was in lastyear is allready in this year.
All bow hunters must be signed in by Sept.26
All gun Hunters must be sighed in by Oct.15
A clear Photo for each entrie (kill) must be posted with the hunters Face & the Tag
and the head of the deer---Must be a close up---additional photos my be posted also.
You may enter for the Team North or South no Matter where you live.
Please post your DMU where you live when you sign up.
Officals for the north are Issiah,Upstatehunter and Bucksnort.
Officals for the South are Deposit,Howesfc and Raquettedacker.
If a deer is posted ,but not according to the rules 2 officals must rule on it,
They may ask the hunter for additional photos,Or a tag Scan.
Hunters have 3 days to comply-----
North will checkout the southern hunters kill and the south will do the same for the North kills.
Any discrepency--Drobertsinmaryland with be the final judge---
Winning team will make up the new 2011 Banners for both teams-members should disply them.

Joe, the Tagout rule, that does not include DMP tags correct? ONE either sex Bow Muzzle, ONE antlerless bow/muzzle and ONE Buck during gun and that is TWO points?

Hollywood--ya we had some Ideas about added points but hoping to keep this simple---like a point or 2 for bow hunters and a added point for a buck---but maybie nextyear..
lastyear it was so close--
extera points this year with a tag out with bow ,bp,and regular season ---now that is tough---

actually my dmu is 5H not 5J. I been asked to register for this for 1 1/2 years - so finally here I am. Thanks. I have the itch already. Been scouting my head off. Just got back actually from moving my trail camera. I will get some pics up on here soon.

Your gonna need all the help you can get.....I got a peek at one of the residents where I hunt....Looks very much like the buck I shot in '08.
Just wider and higher, might not be as big mass wise. OH and have we ever discussed bear?? I'm going to get my licence next week. Looking to get out

well got my first one of the season outa the way last night...the truck made out pretty good but the deer wasnt so lucky. i prolly coulda got some meat off of it but it slid into the other lane an someone else ran right over it. it was just a poor little button buck came out of nowhere :'( so you north guys better be on top of your game cuz im taking a toll on the population this year lol!! Good luck!

Helps to give your management unit. STKA started a map showing where everyone was from. Will be cool to see it when everyone signs up.

I got distracted by the trail cam and shooting the bow, I'll get it updated when I have some time to sit down and add them all. Must be getting close to October, all the seasonal people are showing up.

Thats OK Jimi.. If you join the north and shoot one in the south you can still enter it for the north...

I think the north needs to recruite rocky and bauls25. Hunting 6k for the south you guys need to turn to the winning team ;D

With the first season in over 15 years I didn't get a deer last year, and the north still won. I plan on contributing a number of points this season.
As does my son, Next Generation!! He has his new bow, and is shooting it awesome!! I set it up quick last night before we went to throw horseshoes.
Thing is quiet as heck, in less than six shots he was shooting 2" groups at 20yds. Going to try to hook up with a buddy tonight to go sight in his 30 and 40
yard pins at the fish and game club. I want to shoot the 3D's a few times myself. We are getting pumped!!

i may be a newbie but im also extreamly obsessive. ill be in the woods for us northern boys. and if it means i have to set up camp to get some points on the board and not come out untill the jobs done thats what all do. works over rated anyway. lets go north.

North is a lock...thats a good bet for your money bogman...we don't bait up North, we scout and spend time in the woods and it usually pays off...it's alot different than hunting on your game farm where the deer have it easy all year long... :P

Rumor has it pine-needles are very nutritious for deer and a major food source up North!!!!!!Maybe you all should just find a pine tree and sit under it......They do stay green all year-round....... :-\

It's easy to let him get you going huntny30....It's the only thing he's really good at.That and pouring the bag of feed for the deer so he can get the most pics,
see the most deer. Play holier than thou with "his" deer herd, only shooting trophy bucks. I've only seen one decent 8 he has shot. So wheres all the proof
his system works....He has no idea, nor would he be able to find a deer in a full season in the Adirondacks.
Your so right Viv, we work as hard as any hunter in the country to shoot a mature buck. Friend of mine took a back country trip in Montana a few years ago.
He said the ride was tough, the hiking tougher, but they walked to a high point and had over ten mule deer withing stalking distance the first morning. He said to the guide
I thought this was going to be tough....The guide just gave him a funny look. Friend said where we hunt, the mountains are a bit smaller, we might be able to ride a four wheeler into the back country. But we may hunt for days and never see a deer. The guide said why do you hunt there? Because we live there....

The farm I hunt has no bucks, I've seen 3 in 3-4 years. Two were being tagged and the third got shot while I was looking at it through my scope to make sure it was a doe. All three were 1.5yr olds. I only farm hunt to fill DMAP's for the freezer. When I went out to change the batteries in my trail camera today in the suburbs I jumped two bucks that were in the field already at 5:45pm one was one of the bigger ones. Couldn't see what it was but it was out of velvet, still reddish colored antlers.

I was wondering if that would get you going DRob. Course you have intelligence and can read who it was meant for between the lines.
I feel if it is legal and you want to do it then by all means put out the feed. I just take exception to people who say they will do as they please, because the
state shouldn't tell them what to do with "their" deer. It isn't legal here so we can't do it ....period, end of story.
It is where you are hunting, so go man, run for another bag!!

No sir not getting me going. ;D Upstatehunter I bait these sites but I do not hunt right over top of them. Do I hunt trails leading to and from that area you bet. I'm hunting a small parcel of land anything to hold the deer there longer the better(which is why I get upset when distant relatives move in). It is a heavily pressured area so I have to strike while the iron is hot so to speak. It is totally legal to bait in MD. I just don't want anyone on here to get the wrong impression. I know you didn't mean it that way upstatehunter just explaining myself. ;)

The North is in big trouble if what I am seeing is any indication how the season is going to go. Lots of big boys running around our area down south. I also have been seeing some beauties around my property in Buffalo too.

Found the first rubs of the season this morning on a little scouting mission. Got the cameras up in a new spot. Had a 5 point walk by the office at work last night that was all clean.

I saw lots of clean racks last evening traveling back to Syracuse from Buffalo. Lots of deer in the fields last evening as well.
Most of the big boys should be all cleaned up. The smaller bucks seem to hold the velvet longer.

I know Raquette is, I hope a bunch of you are because I will be stealing points from the South later on!! ;D 8) There is alot of easy access State Land with decent deer populations just across the line in Lewis/Oswego counties...just want to help you folks out so it is at least a close competition this year... :P

1 jug of your own sweat
In a large pot combine your unfilled tag, the sweat you've poured out on those long hikes, and the blood lost on those unsuccessful stalks. Bring to a boil. Add salt and pepper to dissipate the "failure" flavor to taste. Serve with memories of failed stalks and missed shots.

All entries Must be registered with Myhuntingforum.com with a name.
All New York state regulations and Laws apply.
All deer must be killed in New York State.
Doe's and button bucks are 1 point
Bucks are scored by the number of points they have.
Spike horns must have one 3" spike other points must be 1" on racks same as NYS law.
Anyone that Tags out with Bow ,Blackpowder and Regular Gunseason will recieve 2 additional points.
Everyone that was in lastyear is allready in this year.
All bow hunters must be signed in by Sept.26
All gun Hunters must be sighed in by Oct.15
A clear Photo for each entrie (kill) must be posted with the hunters Face & the Tag
and the head of the deer---Must be a close up---additional photos my be posted also.
You may enter for the Team North or South no Matter where you live.
Please post your DMU where you live when you sign up.
Officals for the north are Issiah,Upstatehunter and Bucksnort.
Officals for the South are Deposit,Howesfc and Raquettedacker.
If a deer is posted ,but not according to the rules 2 officals must rule on it,
They may ask the hunter for additional photos,Or a tag Scan.
Hunters have 3 days to comply-----
North will checkout the southern hunters kill and the south will do the same for the North kills.
Any discrepency--Drobertsinmaryland with be the final judge---
Winning team will make up the new 2011 Banners for both teams-members should disply them.

Yes CP I have had seasons with no venison, two to be exact....Last year, and 1989 when I wouldn't shoot a doe with my bow.
When I got slapped to my senses by the guys I hunted with I lost that holding out for a trophy idealism and started to once again fill tags.
Someday you'll understand, the state does things for a reason, and shooting a doe or two is a heck of a lot better than losing 10-15 to winter kill
and over population.
Hey Bog, does insurance cover the damage of my buck if I missjudge the landing zone????? ;D

Just thought of something today---why didn't anyone think of this---it's BIG------while i was pounding out a .22 round out of my remington 510 that got jammed because there was some dead bee's and bee crap in the barrel, and this gun was given to me by a real movie star about 40 years ago---yes a real movie star who is still a good friend of mine--

That trophy is as good as Norths. I think its an awesome idea. I live in the capital region but travel to hunt from stueben county up into the dacks so i can transport also. Or should i say will transport with everything team north adds to it.

Ice fishing get together sounds awesome. Im a walker too doesnt bother me. Camping at the leans would be awesome too. Iv never done any winter camping but i would love to. Just got some really bad news though. Got slammed at work with a monster. Was planing on hunting monday tuesday and wed but now i cant get the days off. Pretty bummed.

It's interesting that you say that. I have a buddy that hunt's a farm nearby. The only acess to the back of the fields was around the edge. He couldn't get to the rear of the property without walking the edge and this would spook all the deer in the field in the morning. If he rode his 4 wheeler in to get around the field the deer would stay put and come by his stand on the way back to the bedding area. Moral of the story is the motor vechicle usually won't spook them as much as a man on foot.

Ya I can, but the brace is kinda a pain. I'm just shooting without it. I'll keep shooting a bunch every day after work (like I'm going to do right now) and probably won't shoot over 25-30 yards from the tree since I haven't been shooting much.

Gee I've gotten off the four wheeler, loaded the gun and shot the buck, gotten off the wheeler, put the arrow on and shot the deer.
They don't pay that much attention to them. Unless guys in the area start shooting at them off them(which is illegal).
Someday you'll get one right CP.......

Yeah local agent issued me the same color tags as last year. They called DEC and said I was fine, just may have to explain to the officer.
Seems one major misconception is that you have to have this years license as well as a tag from last year to hunt the first four days.
A lot of guys I'm talking to were going to wait until next week to get this years license, saying the first four days are on last years.
You have to have both...

I saw an eight over on Klossner's, but have yet to see anything good on ours yet... Guess there was a six in neighbor's clover field near truck garage. I've got several stands and blinds all ready to go. Took the 1st thru the 6th off, can't wait. I can't believe that huge one you got a trail cam pic of; that is a true trophy there!! Good luck man!!

I hope to see lots of pics from both sides, if nobody is killing deer then the competition is gonna be boring...I always use these couple days to work all the kinks out from not being out there all year with all the gear...for me if it don't have spots still, or an obvious button buck, it takes an arrow on these four days...tags do not not taste good...Good Luck all! :)

I got a great packbasket up there about 15 years ago that I still use. I also got a lot of the old hunting, trapping licenses that are the buttons.

To be honest with ya CP, every place that the group I hunt with have ever been invited to down south we were asked not to come back. They hunted and hunted and shot few deer. We looked over a map and then went down when they said they wouldn't be there. Didn't want to mess with the guys that hunted there all the time.
Was way to easy to fill every tag in a weekend. We shot four bucks and two doe on Saturday and returned Sunday and filled the remaining 2 buck tags,
and four doe tags. Couple of the bucks were good solid 8 points. The guys that hunted there all the time were ticked off, they had never shot bucks like that there.
Yes we may use a few more days up here in the woods...But we still fill tags and shoot deer. I'd be willing to bet you would spend years without shooting one.

I chose at the last minute last night to hunt my early season spot near Remsen. A long drive from Worcester, but it almost paid off. Saw one doe this morning, mingling around in the orchard. Got some lunch and dried off my clothes at my buddy's house, then went back out. Just before dark I had a really nice looking 7 point come strolling right toward me. Came to full draw with him at 25 yards...and he stopped behind a thick apple tree. Eventually turned and walked back where he came from. I'm unfortunately done until October as well. Was great to be out though!!

Rain held off for just enough time to get a decent afternoon hunt in. I saw 4 different bucks. A small spike, a six point and two beautiful bucks. Not sure how many points, but they both were over 100 inches. If it was muzzleloader, I would have one of them in the truck. My buddy saw two bucks and shot one of them. We had a hard time following the blood trail because it started raining hard, but he got a real good hit on him and we are confident we will find him piled up in the morning.

well finally found a decent spot to use the climber in a old orchard on some state land near remsen got up in the tree around 1600 and settled in after watchin some turkey's for about a hour had a doe and a button buck at 18 yard's but just could not seem to do it if it was a doe and a doe fawn well then maybe at about 1800 heard something to my right looked over and had a 3pt grazing toward's me let him get to about 25 yards then i had enough watchin him and let the arrow fly he jumped the shot alittle and i hit him a little far back i gave him a hour (wrong move) (raining out) had a hard time finding blood so i went and got my buddies beagle cant run a rabbit but sure could track a deer finally found the deer at 2100 got him to the butcher at 2200 he was not to happy to see me so late but it's to warm to wait and i have to be to work at 0600 so im not cutting it myself it was great to be in the wood's minus the rain can't wait to get back out this weekend here is a the only pic's i got of the deer i seen tonite

sorry guy's that is the only pic i have it was soaked and tired to be thinkin about pic's of tag's and stuff i can take a pic of the tag if needed but other than that it is what it is i guess i'm not out to win a challenge with a 3 pointer on last year's tag for me it was nice just to be out and the bonus of filling a left over tag ;) but i did see some good evidence of possibly taking 8-10 point's from the north this weekend ;) and yes issiah you are correct it has a small fork on the deer's left side in my eye's it's a spike but the state call's it a 3 point 1 1/2" tine toward's the top of main twig those are not beam's ;D

OK, as far as I'm concerned, a pic of the filled tag is good. I know how hard it was raining last night at 11-12. Not fit for man nor beast.
I'm also impressed you took the time to use a dog to help find the deer. Shows a good hunter ethic to make every attempt to recover the deer.
So as for this judge, a picture of the filled tag= 3points for the south. I can see the third point in the pic....

Tomorrow looks to be the only day worth hunting on last years tags. I'll be out in the afternoon, I didn't even bother sighting in my Montacs yet. I've got two good Spitfires and a practice/duller one I can use for a follow-up. Two arrows should be enough, I don't expect to be using any anyhow. And there's no way I'm dragging more than one deer out of there anyway. Good luck to anyone going out tomorrow, I expect there will be pics up by the time I make the 2 hour drive home.

CHEEKS...Get your camera over on the ridge tomorrow...that 10 point that your mom had in her yard was just verified by AP3...he is in the ditch watching traffic on the hill looking to probably cross over to your moms side...he slowed right down and saw it in the headlights...he said no doubt 5 on both sides...perfectly symetrical but not huge...hopefully he stays smart and don't get hit...

Thanks guys. Spent a lot of time in the stand and that was the first one I seen. I saw 4 coyotes between a night watch and the following morning.Was trying to hold out for an 8 point I've been seeing. Won't be able to get out for a few days. Another famous Northern zone spike that is going to be good eatin.

well just a few hour's left to the pre-season the crafty south has the lead with a 3 point field goal the mighty north responded with a 2 point conversion seem's like we have a close game going into the regular season starting in about 12 hour's just remember it all come's down to the super bowl in the december smoke pole season!!!!! good luck boy's ;)

Tomorrow is opening day for me. I'm all ready to go in the morning; can't wait. Frickin' Boss has been tryin to call me into work. Haven't had a day off in 6mos, and havent taken more than 3 days in a row off, in like 10 years, I finally get the OK to have a real vacation, and ring, ring, ring. It's stealing from the anticipation and eating me up inside... Regardless, I'll be on stand at 5:30am. Anything without horns, and anything with more than 3 on one side, that offers a clear shot at 25yards or less, is going to have an arrow flying with the intent of hitting it's vitals.

They down size and then when someone who has earned a vacation takes it, try to get them to work during it. My previous employer was like that.
Yet another reason I'm glad I'm not there anymore. I would end up at work at least two days of my 5. Only causes employees to feel resentment
towards them. But all they see is dollars in their pocket.

Thanks Scott, I'm usually not one to rant on the forums, but my wife is tired of hearing it. I've given my employer everything I have; Wish they would mirror the "care". Seems like it's too often: "Every man for himself." The guys that care, get burnt a lot... I've got a bunch of spots all ready to go for the next few days. Going to work them methodically, and see if I can't get one. Still no evidence of any good bucks here yet. Fun & meat will do.

Good luck Issiah, always seems like the more you do, the more they want. When I did a stint at a private ambulance company to make end's meet during the Thin years of the cranberry industry (late 90's) I told the supervisor I would need a week off to harvest the bog, I had always taken extra work,stayed late or came in early if needed. Did my job with a conchies and tried to be a company man. "Well you really don't have any vacation time coming yet so I'm not sure how that's going to work" Is the reply I got. This is a company that half the employees are late every day and the other half have an excuse everyday of why they can't do a call within an hour of their quitting time so they are late getting home. I told the supervisor" I just though I would tell you ahead of time I won't be here next week, Call me out sick,absent, on vacation or abducted I really don't care, There are 6 other company's in competition with you that will hire a seasoned Paramedic in a second" . "Should I come back after next week?" Oh well if you put it like that I'll see you when you get your cranberries picked. We certainly don't want you to leave. Trouble now is the economy has taken our leverage away, a good stable job is a precious thing.

It's probably as much my fault for not telling them how I feel Harrie. You relate well... I wish I made more money (who doesn't), but the job I have now is a dream come true. Driving truck had kept me away from home, a lot more than I wanted, for quite a few years. I finally found a driving job that is 8hr days / 40hrs a week. Time is worth more to me than money... I think, I make it too obvious how much I enjoy the job.

Went out this after noon. Got to my stand and there was a fresh pile of deer turds under it with some tracks. I spent 3 hours there until dark and not one deer seen. Did have a grouse land under me though.

Got outta work early so went to my new stand. Checked the cam first, 430 pictures in 2 weeks including a really nice buck! Sat in the stand for a while at around 545 saw brown movement. It was a button buck at about 20 yds behind branches. Wasn't gonna shoot, as it was walking under me decided I would shoot last minute.... Right over the top of it :-[ I shouldn't have rushed a last minute shot like that or shot at a button/yearling to begin with. It sucks I missed but Im happy I didn't kill it and it was a clean miss. I could make a thousand excuses but basically with a combination of 10 things, I just plain old missed. Had two more come in 10 yards behind me at 615 including a nice mature doe, but she caught my wind and turned the other way before coming into an open lane. Other than the bad decision on the first deer, it was a very good night. Very Very happy to see deer. Out again to redeem myself in the am.

First one dropped it in its tracks. 8) It was struggling for 25 min so I put another one in. Not big, but my first bow kill from a stand. It fed its way down the hill right to 20 yards. Two more were behind me but knew I was there and ran just before I shot this one looked up and i let one fly. Must be This cold weather really got them active. I've seen 7 in the last two days either walking in or from the stand which is a ton for here.

Got in the stand about 330 today. AMAZING AMAZING day for northern zone. Saw 9 deer, 2 coyotes, and had an owl land right by me. That makes 16 deer i've seen in 2 days. I'm starting a journal later to detail it all. Still in awe...

CHecked my trail cam photos. Noticed last week when I sat deer where there 20 minutes before I got there and 10 minutes after I left because it started raining. Saw 3 fri night, 3 sat morning, 9 sat night, NOTHING sunday. Maybe I stunk the place up, but just shows you gotta be in the right place at the right time. My buddy was hunting less than 100 yds from me sat night and only saw half as many as I did. I can't imagine how many I've missed seeing over the last few years because I rested my eyes for a few minutes or wasn't looking in the right direction at that exact moment. Anyways, there out there guys, keep at it!

Anyone interested in a .50 cal inline Savage muzzleloader? My brother won this muzzleloader about 2 years ago. Already has one, he hunted with it approx. 5-6 times. Never killed anything with it. Not even broke in yet. Gun dealers won't give him crap for it. Worth about $600-$700 retail. Let me know if any of you are interested. Thanks. 11 more days and the points will start racking up. Buck activity on the increase here in western NY. A friend sent me this today in an e-mail...
He stated that "the ground was torn up" with scrapes this past weekend. He saw 10 different scrapes on this particular parcel of land and lots of activity at night around them....

gjonesy7. Welcome!!! About time? You have to be in before the 26th of september for bow kills, but you can be in for gun season. Let joe snag know that you want in, and give him what team you want to hunt for. (north or south) and give him the area you live in. You can live in the southern zone and still be on team north or vice versa. So drop a reply on this thread to let snag know that your in. Go North!!!!

My father likes doing treestands in the rain for the same reason. To me it sucks the fun right out of it, if I had a choice I'd do it before a good rain is forecast. Usually I have to do it when I have time.

You can choose either team.. It doesn't matter where you hunt or kill... All the northern team members come down south and take our deer and post them for the northern team...Thats how they won last year.. ;D ;D ;D ;) ;) ;) JK'n... ;D

There were only a few questionable deer last year and most of those were during the regular season, not early seasons.
Don't get where your going with that one CP.
The deer populations are down in the state. Sure there may be pockets of deer. Making those that hunt there feel like there are a lot of deer.
I've ventured out up to 15 miles from the house, and have seen a lot of the same. Yet guys hunting 20 miles away near a town are seeing deer, and missing bucks ;D
And yes they are areas where deer feeding is regular. They also have a lot fewer hunters per mile.

man this guy doesnt quit. it sure gets kinda anoying. i dont care if there are tags in the pic or not. its an online friendly competition. there are no prizes, no one is going to be better off the day after this thing is all over. i dont see what all the hype is about wiith these rules and people getting called out every time a pic is posted. to all those who have posted picks of there kills this year, tag or not, congrats and good shootin. ill give you the benifit of the doubt and take your word for it, your all hunters just like me so i assume you have some of the same morals in life. but this one guy calling everyone out and always stiring the pot is getting oold.

Not trying to start trouble about the tags guys and I don't take offense, just gets frustrating. There is nothing in this world I love more than hunting and I do it in a very honest fashion. So when I have a year seeing more than I ever could have imagined, and have the opportunity to get one, let alone two with a bow, it just plains sucks that an internet forum degrades the extactic excitement I get. Don't worry about counting mine, its4-3 south... Good luck, I'll be focusing on hunting

I think some people need to chill a bit (sounds like some have calmed down already) To me it did not seem if they were attacking for the tag picture just wondering if there was one. To many people jump to to many conclusion. Its all in funs guys, but I also think if you agreed to be a ref then you have to take to good with the bad (there are always those that insitgate). Good job on the hunt Half. If you get a pic with the tag then fine No big deal to me. Same situation with me. The friends I grew up with call me saying they want me to go with them to NYC on a weekend mid november to visit a friend that just moved there. I told them they were out of their mind if they thought I was going to give up a weekend during the rut to be trapped in a city ::)

Must be getting close to deer season "11 Guests, 22 Users". Doesn't seem that long ago there were only half a dozen of us lingering around here. I'm not rushing to get out, I'll check my trail cams Saturday and hunt the afternoon if it looks like the wind will be letting up.

SOS, I bowhunted the SZ a few years over below Granville. Usually by the second week of the season there were scrapes all over, so I was using a mock scrape
with a few drops of Tinks. Not a lot just enough to help the bucks find them. Most all would be taken over quickly, and I did shoot a spike headed to one.
I think a big mistake some make is using way to much scent, early. Last couple years I've used scent wafers that are pre scented. They smell but it is
not the same strength(from what I can smell) as say dunking a scent hanger....
It's 8:30, hope some of you are dragging or loading on the wheeler by now!!!

Had a good morning in the stand today, got in about 615 or so. Got as comfortable as one can be in a tree with 30 MPH wind and waited. Got really cold around 745 and stood up to get my stuff packed up, turned around and put the quiver on my bow, turned back around and WOW where did you come from.

70 yards out this buck is making a scrape as I'm getting ready to get down. It's a cell phone pic but i forgot the good camera in the truck. I know where the deer is can you guys see him? That was the action for the morning but it was good to see a deer. Here is a pic of the scrape on the edge of our food plot.

Got it done fella's - Got a 3 pt or spike depending on the ruling at 0840. Blew the heart almost in half. Pics and story later!! I am becoming more and more confident with each kill. My carrer got off to a shky start as I had missed a lot of deer and a couple nice bucks. I'm pumped!!

man hunted my tail off sat in the stand till bout 8:30, then the wind scared me out of my stand.i still hunted till noon had lunch and still hunted some more saw 1 partridge and 8 turkey and some deer tracks

Well got my test outta the way this mornin and was on stand at 3:30. Busted a doe going in. Around 5:30 had a big doe and two fawns come feeding out into the oaks. They worked their way to 28 yds and i passed them up had a pretty easy shot. Nothing until i went to lower my bow to the ground. Got it half way down and theres about a 50lb doe 15 yds that just popped out of the thick. She saw my bow swaying around and blew outta there. Productive afternoon at least. Tomorrow morning the flat heads might be in danger. Give me a nice one within 20 yds and it should be safe to say point for the SOUTH! Good luck to everyone

Ill try ;D. Almost forgot to add. The 3 does were 100% downwind with about 10-15mph gusts. Theey were weary and picked there noses up a couple times but just flickered there tails and went back to eating. I had my scentlok suit on. So maybe its not 100% scent elimination but these deer did not spook and came into bow range. Maybe it maintains odor just enough to keep you undetected. Im pleased that it seemed to work well.

At about 515 had two does step out at about 50 yards. they fed around for a while and then out of nowere the bigger of the two does started easing twords me. at about 35 yards i let one fly and right over her back it went. this is where it got good. she turned and stared walkng away from and when i reached for my grunt calli dropped out. so i grunted with my mouth and she turned and came right back. at about 30 yards i let the second arrow fly and that one was a good one. this is the first deer i have ever shot with a bow before and the sound that it made at impact was aswsome. by the time i met my father and got on the trail it got pretty dark so were gonna go in and get her in the am. ill have the pics up tomorrow afternoon. one more point for team north coming up.

Not sure but I think we might be jumping the gun on this one. From the sounds of things step2jimi sounds unsure of the shot. I will say it is easier to see wet blood at night with a flash light. If you jump it then you have no choice to back out till morning. Yotes would be a big concern up your way letting it lay over night. Guess there really is no right or wrong answer here.

Depends on how bad the coyotes are where he is hunting. If your real sure of the shot, and have trailed deer with lights before, then go get it.
If your not sure of the shot, the coyotes aren't that bad, it is a lot easier in the daylight to follow a blood trail. Tonight will be down into the 30's again
so it should be fine. Just will be a sleepless night.........From what I've seen on the guys trail cams down towards Albany, there are a lot of coyotes.
I'm thinking if the shot was good, go find it.

Respectfully disagree. If it is dead it is not going anywhere. It will be plenty cold enough tonight. The only harm in leaving it would be the risk of coyotes getting it first. A chance you take.
On the other hand, if it isn't a kill, going after it in the dark could be problematic....pushing a wounded deer further etc. Bottom line, if you are unsure you have to back off. Especially if this is his first deer. Sounds like he might not have much experience bloodtrailing. It is much easier in daylight then botching it up in the dark.

Hard to tell from his post whether he hit it well or not, and whether he even saw the arrow or the blood trail or anything. Depends on the situation I guess we can agree on. But I see no point leaving a dead deer to sit in the woods. If i heard a big thwack, thought i hit it will, and depending on the amount and color of blood on the arrow and ground, I see no point in letting it sit over night for any reason and risking anything. If you're unsure thats another thing. Hard to tell what the situation was by the post. Either way, good luck in the morning jimi, looking forward to some pictures!

Pretty decent opening weekend, aside from not killing anything. Windy as hell Saturday, and pretty cold at times. Opted to hunt a ladder stand in the orchard. NOTHING in the morning. Not even a squirrel. Upon further investigation, I realized there were no apples left in there. Weird....a month ago it was loaded. That evening I returned, and saw does crossing behind me in the swamp, out into the green field. I eased down and made my way to the edge. Ranged them at 185 yards. Decided to ease my way up the field edge. Got to within 65 yards and ran out of cover. Watched them til dark and backed out to the truck.
Yesterday, hunted the same stand and saw a small doe in the morning. Decided to hunt a green clover field in the evening...problem is, no stand there yet. Put up a hang on, climbed up and before I even had my bow up here comes a doe. She mills around and disappears into one of the orchards. 3 minutes later, here comes a group of does. Looked like 5 does, until I glassed behind them and see 2 small bucks. Looked to be a pair of 6 points. They were walking along and all of a sudden started to fight! Very cool, I've never seen deer fight while actually in the stand, so that was neat. They eventually stopped and all made their way down the same trail as the first doe. That was the extent of my weekend. Pretty good, all things considered, so I won't complain. Won't be able to get out again until Thursday. Can't wait!!

Had one of the best opening weekends ever! Decided not to hunt Saturday morning because of the weather, instead headed to camp early and get situated. In the afternoon on the walk in I jumped a doe already in the field. I got in my stand sat down and looked up the field and here comes a doe and two button bucks. I haul my bow up the tree a quickly as possible, get an arrow nocked and get ready. No gloves, no face mask, quiver still on the bow. They walk within 10 feet of my tree and just start feeding in the field below me. I see movement below me in the woods and here comes a doe and a fawn. They come up the run and start feeding to my right about 40 yards. I finally get a chance to at least put one glove on and get my quiver off the bow. as I hang my quiver I look down the field edge and see a shooter buck just standing there looking my way at the other deer, about 80 yards away. He is just feeding away minding his own business. I get out the grunt tube and with the wind I think he could just barely hear me. He would look but had no interest in coming down my way. as I turn to look the other way a 4 pointer is waking right to me at 35 yards. I decide to pass and he feeds within 20 yards of me. I check back with the big boy and he now has two smaller bucks feeding with him. now i have 6 set of eyes within 40 yards of me. I look up towards our other stand and I can see a deer walking to the apple tree in the field. I see that it is a small buck, right behind him is a bigger buck but still a small six or something. Behind him is a real nice buck. 8 point that wraps around and almost touches. I decide that if he comes my way, I am going to take him. They disapear behind the apple tree and I lose track of them. all of a sudden here come a doe and a fawn from behind the apple and coming right at me. behind them is all three bucks. My wind is blowing straight out into the field and at this point none of the deer have even thought about smelling me. The 8 breaks off a little and is now coming up the edge of the field right to me. I clip the release on and get ready, 60 yards, 50 yards, 40 yards, deer blowing, deer running, bye bye 8. The doe and fawn got downwind of me at about 100 yards and I guess my scent was dropping into them out there and they smelled me. Just after they ran, a small spike came out and walked about 30 yards from me, again I passed him up. I check back down where the big one was and now there is a monster buck standing down there along with a whole bunch of other deer. I am not sure now which bucks I have seen or are new buck but I know that there are at least two shooters. I blow the grunt tube but they really arent interested. Two of the smaller bucks are sparring a little bit and ever now and then I could hear their horns clacking.I see a few more does and the night ends with 13 confirmed does and 7 confirmed bucks and at least 5 or more deer that I could not ID. Not a bad first afternoon.

Missed the morning hunt on Sunday because my cell phone died during the night, was disappointed, but I could use the sleep, stayed up with the boys at another camp until almost 1:00 am.
Sunday afternoon, even windier than Saturday, oh well it didn't seem to bother them yesterday so we will see what happends today. I decided on Saturday night that I was going to go in and hang a stand where the big bucks were and make as little commotion as possible, sit there and hope they do the same thing. I get settled in and about an hour goes by with no action. Seemed like a whole different field. LOL All of a sudden I look to my left and about 70 yards away one of the shooters is standing on the field edge. He starts feeding and doesnt move more than 10 yards either way for the next hour. In the meantime he is joined by a small six and a 4 point. The 8 point that I was going to shoot is standing underneath my other stand. I think well that figures, I should have stayed there. Oh well, at least I am seeing deer. I then hear walking in the leaves behind me in the woods. It is a 3 pointer and he comes out on the run 21 yards from me. A couple minutes later I hear more walking in the leaves, same way the 3 pointer just walked. I am trying hard to see what it is in the saplings and I see that this deer is actually going to go behind me. So I hurry up and move the bow around the tree to the back and I see that it is a shooter buck. When I put the stand up, I really didnt want to walk in the woods at all, but there were two branches that I couldnt live with. If they came up the run behind me they had to walk right under my tree. I knew that if I didnt shoot them before they got to me then they were going to see me or smell me. So I cut the two branches and made sure I could shoot them when they were more broadside. Well didnt he step into that lane and stop. I start to draw back and the velcro on my release made the littlest noise, he stopped for a second and I let the pressure off. He took another step and I come to full draw. I take my time and find the sweet spot, pull the release and I see my arrow disappear...

That's just not right, I want a hunting spot like that though...good lord...I could tell a similar story on here too, I would just have to substitute all his deer with Squirrels... :)

I hit her in the shoulder. Saw the arrow fall out as she ran away. Wether it was right or wrong it was my choice to go after her this morning and thats what i wanted to do. I look for an hour last night and didnt want ot push her. I didnt do anything wrong. I went back in this morning got right back on the blood trail and tracked it over a mile. Out of no were the trail stopped and we searched every ince of the woods and couldnt find her. To say that its my responsibility to go after the deer last night is your opinion i dont agree with it. I searched for over 5 hours toda and couldnt find her i think my responsibilities were taken care of as best i could. I think pushing an injured deer in the dark is a bad idea. I may not have shot a deer before with a bow but i have with gun as weel as been in the woods with many others to track deer. In all those experience holding off and letting the deer lay down and die was the best bet. Im terribly upset that i didnt find her but i also know that these things happen and im not about to start beating my self up over. Ill be back in the woods this afternoon at a different location and ill keep tryin. Wish i could get back in that same stand cause its a nice fun sit there but we tore those woods up looking for that deer today so im gonna let it calm down for a couple days before i get back in there. thanks to all of you with kind words.

unfortinetly she knows what droptine means. i talk enough hunting for her to know. and she would tell me i havnt seen any droptines yet cause shes well aware of the fact that i want a drop tine real bad. i will have an "appointment" tomorrow though at right around 2 oclock though that will force me to leave work. well see what happens tomorrow i wont be able to sleep untill that redemption is mine. and dont worry halrack i didnt take offense i know how things can get mistaken when it comes to the online thing. congrats to everyone else that tagged one this weekend at least i cna come home and see pics of your guys deer.

It happens to everyone sooner or later. It makes you feel sick and question whether or not you want to go back in the woods. As it should.
I can tell that you feel pretty bad about it. Don't forget it, but also don't dwell on it. Accept the fact that you did everything you could to recover the deer. You made a decision and stuck with it. I am not going to question you whether it was the right or wrong decision, I wasn't there. But the fact that you made a decision to the best of your knowledge is all that matters.
Personally, I hope you skipped this afternoon hunt and spent it with your girl. It will make it a lot easier to go next time if you didn't burn your bridge tonight.

OK, now back to the story.
So I think I see the arrow disappear behind his front shoulder and when he jumps I am pretty sure I saw the arrow flip out of him. He runs up the hill about 30 -40 yards and then turns and heads back down the hill but now is just slowly walking, pretty stiff looking. Of course, I am panicked that I gut shot him or maybe I didn't see my arrow hit him at all. He stops about 60 yards away for about 10 seconds and then slowly continues down the hill behind some saplings and out of view. At this point I am ready to fall out of the tree. All goes quiet for another 10 seconds and then all hell beaks loose and sticks and what sounds like logs start breaking and smashing but each time I hear it, it seems a little farther away. Another 20-30 seconds of crashing and I start to hear gasping and almost a growling sound and then silence. I turn around to see 4 of the five other bucks standing 20 yards from my tree just staring at me. They didn't really spook, just walked to my left and started feeding again. Must be they could see my bow with no arrow in it! ;D
So I call my buddy and he gets down and heads over to me. I get down and we go to the truck and get the bloodtracker light and a mag light. We go to where he was standing and find my arrow lying right where I thought I saw it fly out of him. Good blood on the whole arrow. We walk over to where I last saw him standing and we immediately find the best blood trail I think I have ever seen. Just a straight continuous line of blood. We follow it about 40 yards and my buddy says I think I see him. Of course I am so excited I could puke. We walk around a tree and there he is. Real nice 2.5 year old 8 pointer. We exchange high fives and I let out a couple of hell yah's. Thanked the good lord for letting me take this awesome animal and to be a part of this awesome sport. Then I looked at my buddy and said now how the hell are we gonna get him out of here? LOL

Great buck Bignine. Congratulations. My father always tells me, shoot it first then worry about getting it out after. But, he hunts with friends that have machines, I hunt alone not quite the same. At least help is usually just a call away. Congrats again.

I haven't seen a deer on stand yet, but I missed my 2D cardboard deer a week or so ago. buried my Montac in the pallet backer. Planning on a short sit before work in the morning, looks like a nice cool calm morning. Good luck to anyone going out.

My son is only 2 years old, and he loves everything that has to do with hunting, fishing, animals, etc. He has his lifetime license for sportsman, bow and muzzle. I hope that he will someday spend time with me in the woods and I can be there for his first deer down.

yea ill confess i missed a small buk w the bow. came in from a direction i didnt range and apparently i still suck at estimating yardage from 20 ft up. thought he was 35ish and yea he was 25 ish. not the 1st and surely not the last. i was thankful i shot clear over his back and didnt wound him. still a tight competition boys!!! hoping to add 1 to the north this evening.

its weird how bad i could feel when i see a road kill but if i seen one on the roof of your car id give ya a thumbs up..i even slow if i see a dumb rabbit in the road but love to run them with my beagle after deer season..i think its the fact that deer or whatever had a life and now its not going to be put to good use, instead its going to rot away..

Sunday Morning I got in the stand just a few minutes after sun up. Jumped a doe on my way in. Got in the stand and in less then 1 minute this little one came in feeding on the clover and turips we have planted.

A small spike chased her around a bit before heading off and bedding down behing my stand. Then momma came in and the two feed in the food plot for close to an hour and had no idea I was there. Going back out tomorrow morning hopefully I'll see grandpa! Nevermind the trailcam on the tree ;D

Yea to see how this deer reacted to the other deer coming into the area with her tail up and on high aleart was something I've never seen before. And then to watch the other Doe be very very careful about coming into the field was cool. Learned a lot about how the deer enter and exit the food plot. Also go to range a deer in a shooting lane i didnt think was in range but turns out after hitting the range finder 3 times on the deer is well withing range. Two days out and already have seen 5 deer, it's more then I've seen in the past two years combined.

Went out and sat for the better part of the day on Wednesday, saw one doe sneak through like she was spooked by something and saw a flock of turkeys. Very slow day but it was warmer then it has been (60+ degrees) and with a full moon and clear skies I imagine most of the movement happening at night right now. Also found 2 more scrapes in the food plot and have a fuzzy picture of a nice buck at 2am so hopefully he puts himself in range soon. Just got my vacation apporoved for Oct. 27th-Nov. 5th and will be hunting hard then. This Friday and the 40 MPH winds is going to keep me on the couch watching hunting instead of hunting lol.

Ya i know. Figured since i primarily hunt in 7a that i should be in the south. I have only lived in richland for a couple of years and soon i will be living on the land i hunt in 7a. It sure is nice having both sides (north and south) to hunt when ever you want though. Well i still have a doe tag i can fill so back to looking for a flat head again until the gunning opener. Not sure i am going to fill the tag though, i haven't killed a doe off this property in a long time due to the lack of seeing deer. Used to be really good years ago but has gone way down since the last 5 years.

Looks like you are doing well also. You setting traps on monday? I'm going to do a small line. First time trapping this time of year so it should be interesting. I usually only trap muskrats and beavers in the spring. I'm starting to get into the trapping thing a little bit, only problem is i like deer hunting more than trapping and i think it would be to hard to try and do both. Well good luck to you Issiah.

I saw a pack of 8 this morning chasing deer. At one point they rang out in some sort of frenzy you could hear them echoing across the fields for miles. It was one of the craziest thigns i have ever seen in the woods.

My days have been limited (2 morning hunts) but I'm going to camp 11/12 - 11/14, where I feel at home in the woods Usually a great weekend, unless the boys kill'em all this weekend. Big party going up. Hopefully they come back with a good scouting report, but I think there may be one or two less bucks after this weekend.

Did an interview with a family yesterday and a friend of theirs killed a 17 point up in Northern Oswego/Southern Jefferson county with a bow before rifle started, they showed me the pic, it was something, especially for around here...really need to step it up, vacation will be no joke this year...once the Southerntier slaughter opens we might be getting a new, not very nice logo next year...

Well i have another one to add to the south. Traded dmp's with facingiants and headed to my uncles property this morning in cazenovia. The morning started out quiet but around 8a.m. i herd a deer blow off in the distance. 20 minutes later i have what i thought was a doe being chased run across a small swampy area directly towards my stand. The deer gave me a shot and i took it. It all happen really fast. The deer went about 30 yrds and fell over. I was like "yes" doe down, then i get down out of my stand to find out i just killed a button buck. :o :(

It's tagged with a trooper hunting tag :p it had a few broken ribs but other than that I think it's in good shape. I couldn't see letting him go to waste!

Joe had one earlier in the year and it wasn't counted in the contest.
The tag they give you is a possesion tag. So you can legally transport it, and possess it.
Work on the state over the winter to get a vehicle added to the legal hunting implement list... :P

Any manage permit expect for a nuisance permit is for antlerless deer only, and they need to be filled during the open season. Spot lighting a herd of deer in a yard with nuisance permits shouldn't count, but I'm pretty sure they can't be used during the regular season.

That's a DMAP, I can use some some of those. They can only transfer 2 per hunter legally and for does only, the ones we get are paper like the bonus DMP's.

I used a DMAP on the doe I shot on our camp land we get four tags for 9 hunters only to be used on our leased hunting property during hunting season...I could have used a 7R tag however, I didn't get one this year, my wife got one and could have signed it over to me but you can use that on State or County land, our DMAPs can only be used on our property...I'm all for what the judges say, venison in my freezer, I know not everyone gets these so it is a call that needs to be made...I'm in the competition for fun and my feeling won't get hurt...I used it legally and I knew it would cause some questions in this competition thats why I posted a close up of the tag...if she doesn't count oh well, I still love hearing everyones success on here and I still like the competition and I'm still trying to add more points for the team...here are the tags again for those not familiar... by the way this is the first time I have personally used one since hunting there...LOL

Everyone has the same chance at getting one of those as they do a DMP. You have to find out who in your area gets them and ask.
I actually stand a better chance at getting a DMAP, than I do a DMP. The tag numbers for zones I could actually get to are fewer than the nuisance permits.
Some things NYS has to figure out.

This friendly competition is getting way too serious. My understanding is a legally tagged deer with tag, deer, and hunter visible. DMAP tags are legal tags. Judges???? Cheeks out!!! 8)

I have already stated I feel they should be allowed for entry. Legal tag, taken with legal hunting methods.
Way I look at it, I tried for three years for a dmp before they started charging. The area I have to be able to get to, with access to hunt has few of them. So should I say to not allow the doe taken on a dmp in an area that has a lot of tags, that I have no chance to go to. No, that's just selfish.
So I guess diplomatically we have a vote of the judges and the leader of the challenge Joe.
I vote yes they are.

The moon would break out of the clouds now and then and the woods would light right up...
Seen this guy several times during bow but the trail he was using was about 60yards away..
So I was watching for him this morning...
The woods where his trail was, was thick, but right down the middle there was a 10 foot gap he had to cross..
I was ready with the gun, he walked in to view and with a loud mouth grunt he stopped and looked...
He only went 30 yards and piled up... The Remington Copper Solids made one entrence hole and 3 exit holes....
Young deer. Dressed out at 135 pounds....
But hes 6 points or better.. ;D ;D

The grand plan is to go out this weekend, jack a few deer at night after laying c'mere deer in the yard, put a yellow colored tag of some kind on it snap a couple "not so clear" pics and then we'll be right back in the thick of it.
Kidding....All jokes aside, CP, you must be starving for venison, do you remember what it tastes like? I know its been a few years waiting for those antlers to grow down there for ya

The north should be happy I took my girlfriend off my entry name. I'll be taking her out this weekend and if she hunts like she fishes, her first deer will be a bigger buck than any of mine so far. Nothing would make me happier 8). I'm not even bringing a gun, just might have to take hers ;D.

Well I didnt get to take any point from the south guys on my trip to stueben county. Saw a lot of does and one spike while hunting. Had a doe tag but couldnt pull the trigger. Too afraid to loose the chance on a racker. Did see something down there that made me sick though. While tracking one of the other guys in our groups deer we came up on two different bucks down and dressed out. Take a look at the gut pile and see some really bright yellow corn that was mixed with some syrupy grainy looking stuff. Not a biologist and dont know how deer digest there food but it looked like a belly full of bait to me.

This isn't always the case though. At the place I've been nuisance hunting, the owners don't even hunt or eat venison. They are 5th generations farmers whose livlihood depends on the organic farm they run. And we show up and see an entire year's crop of winter leeks destroyed by the deer. The deer flock to farms like this and destroy people's hard work, lives, and income. The deer we shoot here usually don't even come home with us, but get dispursed to local needy families. There's always some a-holes that take advantage of situations, but that's definately not always the case. I'm not sure how these guys that you're talking about just get handed DMAP's? I thought DEC had to come out and observe that damage was being done, that's how it has always worked at this farm I'm talking about. I would call the DEC and report they're abuse of the tags if you seem to feel they are doing so.

My brothers stand is 45 yards from there and he hasn't seen a shooter yet...He let a small crotch walk and 1 horn 2 pt.. I know there is two good 8's still around, that's what I thought my 6 was.. Getting sick of deer around here not having brow tines..

I would say that deer is 3.5 to 4.5. More likely older, distance from the corner of the eye to the tip of nose is a good gauge. He looks to be over 7" so that should put him over 3.5. Plus the neck size, and Roman nose all point to an older deer. I would love to see 2.5 year old deer sport that kind of mass here in the Dacks. They just don't until 3.5 or older.

That was Adksavages buck, I just posted the pic that didn't work for him. The teeth are the best way to get an age. Antlers can vary way to much. I'd guess 3.5 by the face.

Lake George if it freezes early ...... if not i have some spots near Albany that would work .... although with all the northern boys here there will be ice up that way sooner than down here .... we were on a pond in Essex County early December last year.. and even caught a fish or two

As for all the other comments... Thanks guys. I was 142 lbs dressed. His teeth were worn some. Not sharp like the two and a half's. When I bring him to get mounted I'll ask him. He's usually great at ageing. I'll let you know. And I would measure the nose, but the buck is being processed. We also dropped off a doe with him, so it may take some time to get him back. Again, I'll let you know. As for where he was taken....5R. I have been hunting down there for southern, for many years now. And I have shot many two and a half's. Most are Six points and very small eights. My guess is a three and a half or older. We will see. :)

Well, unfortunately it's the first year in over 5 years I havent killed a racked buck :-( but it's not over yet! :-) atleast I'll have venison for ice fishing!
