I sure am getting the itch for bow season...I would add the 2010 card like ice shanty, all antler points visible in photo and a tag must be on the deer
only things I can think of right now, have fun at the Glenn...GO NORTH!!!!!!

I agree with Huntny. Maybe make bucks and does worth more points if taken with a bow to compensate for the extra challange? Add one point to the score if taken with a bow or something like that. Just a thought. Cheeks out!!! 8)

Better pictures is my request. Most pictures you couldn't see the points on the antlers

I like the 2010 card idea and multiple pictures of the antlers.. And only the hunter and deer in the pictures... None with hunting partners...

Right--one thing looks like we all agree,,Good photo of the hunter ,Tag and deer-close up,,---
C.P.---i'm scouting out your area----LOL---i'll be killing brain cell at the race all weekwnd,,anyone in the neighborhood stop in--inside the track--site F-552.next to the Labatts trailer,,
how about one thread of BS and stories,,,the other of Photos and point tally only  !!!!!!!
Also a few  Judges on protested deer---and their desision will be final---I won't be a judge---and some who is nuteral like drobertsin marryland to be the tie braker if needed??
keep the ideas coming--

I like the two separate threads for it. This one will serve well for the BS...Not that we do that much...LOL
I agree with the picture being taken with the tag. Hope I get to use one of mine this year....

I like the better pic idea. Not a huge fan of the card thing though. I carry enough stuff in the woods that i have to remember let alone a card but thats just me.

Yea I never get into internet competitions that require a card either,I don't have a printer!!!!Last year alot of deer shown with no tags,so couldnt even tell if it was killed the same year.............

How about weapon, hunter, and tagged animal all together in the pic? That way you could probably do away with the card. Most people don't take a pic with the weapon on display. I just think it makes the picture much more memorable but that's just me.

Also a few  Judges on protested deer---and their desision will be final---I won't be a judge---and some who is nuteral like drobertsin marryland to be the tie braker if needed?

I would be honored to do it if need be.

i'm pretty new to the hunting bit but i have had an easier time taking deer during bow season. in my experience they are still very predictable, come out during the day, and aren't running scared because all their buddies are getting blasted. it all comes down to scouting and finding the BEST spot, where YOU can make the shot. anyways, following that logic i'd rather see the points allotted evenly without giving preference to those taken with a bow. unless it is taken with a bow during gun season. that is quite a feat imo, maybe someday i'll be that good...

Is there anyway someone could make a map of NY and have a number on the map where everyone is from??at least close to where their from????
like # 10 is joe and it shows he is in the center of fulton county??
Title: Re: Pre North / South Challenge B.S only Thread
Post by: Deposit on Aug 05, 2010, 08:39:15 PM
couldn't we use the DMP numbers? And how about the point system? Last year does where only worth 1 point right? What if it was something like any deer is worth 5 or 10 points, bucks get additional points for the antler points. So if you took a 10 point buck it would be worth 20 points total. Then if the other side ends up taking 2 does they would match the buck. It just seems like with last years point system the side with the most bucks could race to far ahead. Not all of us get a shot at a buck during the season. Just my opinion to try and keep things competitive.

Deposit--That sounds OK--I'll try to get it all ready by Sept.1 --if we can't get a map we could do the DMP # after your name, just to give an Idea where you are-

The Chopper county!!!!!Cant wait to see if Paul Sr fails against his son this season.......... ;D

Doesnt the tryouts start in 2 weeks for newbie entrants Drob?????? ;)

If you fail the bow course your prolly still eligible, but if you do get used to it cause all north hunters are getting big helping of failure this year!!!!!! 8)

Does should still be 1 point still IMO!!!!

Not all of us get a shot at a buck during the season. Just my opinion to try and keep things competitive.

Especially less for the ones that only shoot standing still deer!!!!But the adding the bucks points worked great last year and was very competitive all the way to the Norths Miraculous late season come back...... :o

Why should a doe be any less than a buck? (besides the antler points) They can be just as tough to hunt (if not tougher when there are a lot of them...ever hear of the old whiley doe?) It takes just as much nerve and effort to hunt and take a good doe IMO. (ya and not just pop off shots at a running deer butt shots and blowings its legs off as well as just wound it. ya lets not take the time for a good shot for a quick kill...sorry had to say it...again)

Here it goes...I have last years bow tag which WILL BE FILLED one of the first 3 days of northern bow.. ;D ;D To put the south on the board quick with some points..  Then Im going to thin out some of these little 5 and 6 pointers around here...  The last 2 years I hunted just one deer. LOL, OK maybe I'll have to go to the southern zone this year for bow season. Always did have an easy time shooting one in the game farm....LOL
Then come back north and shoot another "monster"....With no one responding to my resumes or giving me the "over qualified" excuse. I'll have some extra time to be in the woods this fall by the looks. Good thing I stocked up on broadheads last fall.... 8)

wow! i can't believe its almost time for the challenge to begin again and i must say that i'm stoked.kind of sux i don't have a tag for early bow,and my brother now has the same days off as i do so the whole sharing a bow thing prolly won't work out this season,i guess i'll have to get it done during the gun season is all.as for the challenge rules i do think that it would be a good idea to be a little more strict with  making sure the tag is in the pic,i really don't remember having a problem counting any of the "buck points" last year but multiple pics of the rack prolly wouldn't hurt,i also think that maybe getting more points for does wouldn't be a bad idea too.either way i just hope that this years challenge is as much fun as it was last year and i'm sure it will be i moved a few stands into some new territory that looks to be pretty promising.good luck all...GO NORTH
oh yeah i'm in area 5H warren county, i hunt in johnsburg and stony creek

    Hey, those are fighting words.. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
LOL, I had a lease with another guy on a farm in Granville for a few years. I've never seen so many deer at one time as I did there. One evening I
Found a good runway and from 2:30- around 4:30 when I started my walk out I saw over 25 different deer go by me on the way to the fields.
Even after shooting a mature doe, they just kept filing by. But there I go again killing the buck factory....

It works on my land, never a bad day of not seeing deer!!!!Tons of em here, because not a doe shot on my land in at least 5 years....Now if i could just get my neighbors to do the same there would be a buck for everyone yearly easily!!!!!!But some hunters are greedy I guess, cause its brown its down on bordering property.............. :-\

MY Buck Factory!!!!! ;)

No offense to ya but not gonna be able to compete with your herd of deer in your trail cam pics because we dont have half a truck load of corn out for them to eat. Trust me if i put up a feeder in front of my cam  i would have a herd of em in the pics too  :-\

Getting back to the topic of the challenge. Huntny and I were talking and we came to the conclusion that making does worth more points wouldn't be fair to the north. We don't have the doe permits like the south. Not trying to be a whiner, just trying to keep the playing field somewhat level. Cheeks out!!! 8)

That shouldn't be a factor cause the North can cross the Mason Dixon Line to Hunt Does in the South!

I gave up being a dang northerner about 8 years ago. Two stolen stands on a private lease of land, supposed bird hunters shooting at deer with their
shotguns in a field I was sitting in a tree stand watching....Calling DEC got us asked not to come back to the lease we had payed for. Just to many people contending for to little huntable land.

When they wanna "EXEMPT" my property taxes I will even allow them to shoot all my doe to "HELP" feed the poor in these rough times!!!!!!!!Untill then they can kiss my mule........ 8)

I took it the way you meant it ;D. Like my comment of hunting in a game farm. With the difficulties of finding huntable land and dealing with a lot of
people, my hat is off to those that are successful in the southern zone. It amazes me the amount of people that do so much to get access to small pieces of property.
Soon enough here where I am will be the same way. With the extreme tax raises in the last few years many local families have lost the properties that have been in the family for years. The sale is almost always to a out of stater that posts it and doesn't allow hunting. Couple that with the state's idiocy of Forever Wild lands
I'm afraid my son won't have anywhere to hunt by the time he is 30. So yeah, given the opportunity to go to a southern zone property, I'm a dang northerner.
We all are in the same boat, southern zone hunters come here to find that big Adirondack buck, and we go south to shoot doe with permits. It's all good....

Upstatehunter I hear ya ,I live right next to Karr Valley State Forest 9P and it gets hunted real hard.
I use to be able to hunt my Father inlaws dairy farm 300 acres it went under and got split up into small hunting camps.
When the guns start going off the deer all head to the posted land.
I've got  two nice wall hangers over the years so anything under 8 points I let walk but thats me.
But I'm a meat hunter so I go to my buddies posted land in 8X which is over populated and harvast mature does.
Come icefishing  time I beter have some home made deer jerky to share with my buddies or they might get pissed. >:(

you hit on the head there upstate, and the worst thing about those out of staters is they post there land but they feel free to use the neighbors land as they please.some property sold next to my mothers house sure enough its now posted, but the guys were out riding there 4 wheelers on my moms property right under my buddies tree stand opening day of black powder last year, then when my buddy told them that there was other hunters on that land and they were on some one elses property they just shrugged there shoulders and took off.then they drove right up into the pasture where my mothers horses were right under the fence and up to the road...no respect i say! and its bullshlocken.
if thing keep going the way they are pretty soon the only people that will be able to afford to live here in the adks are the rich out of staters.

i could go on all night, sorry for my rant!

They doubled my property tax 2 years ago!!!!How they say they're not the thieves is beyond me.......I can see inflation but doubling the price!!!!!!! ???

Then they tell me I cant feed a deer!!!!!!!Maybe I will just buy a cow/pig every year to fill freezer and give up hunting.........If feeding them is still legal..... :-\

Not feeding the deer is two fold CP. Not just CWS, it also has to do with over population. Sure some areas aren't over populated...NOW
But if they allow people to feed deer year round and then people adopt the don't shoot a doe idea we have a problem.
Like on Long Island where thousands of dollars of vehicle accidents and estate grounds, and state parks were and are getting lost.
You say you were in PA., They had a severe problem with over population. Costing thousands of dollars in insurance dollars.
I'm all for conservation, which sometimes means deer will die from starvation. We start playing God and saying we know better and we see problems
like disease and property losses.
As far as your taxes, Mostly stems from area properties being sold at over inflated prices, and re valued at a 20-30% increase. Thank your politicians
for driving farms and industry out of NY. And the influx of NJ 'ers. If you only knew what they pay in taxes. So what your paying, to them, is peanuts.
So if it means your here and struggle to pay your taxes of a NJ person buys it at auction and just loves how cheap the taxes are compared to home...
Who do you think they want here....

Bow, Muzzleloader, firearm, 2 DMP...I only count five...well then I get QDM DMP for up North and a property DMP for down South...absolutely rediculous, I know, but as we all know, our state hates deer...Just hope the wifey gets lucky this year, I should enter her into the N/S Challenge, if I don't get her in I know she'll have beginers luck and whack a monster...I know three deer will get me through the year with parties, family dinners, smoked roasts and jerky for early spring Crappie fishing/ice fishing...no need to fill the rest uless I am giving it to someone who can't get their own...gotta save one for Sept 27th-30th for last years tag...that is high pressure hunting...

If people are cheating in this "just for fun" friendly interstate challenge, then there are real issues, I was only a tie breaker last year but I followed the competition and I don't believe people cheated, but Tags should be on the deer before they are removed from the woods anyway...still not gonna affect the outcome...most people are on here because they love this and most people are on here because they are pretty good at it...gonna be a fun year and I can't wait till I'm nestled in my viper...lookin and listenin...I'm tryin to recruit one of my other hunting buddies to get on here, he will represent the South and should give you some points...

whe we have a roolcall just put you DMU next to your name so we everyone has a rough idea where you are in the state---

I've got the last of my back straps soaking in brine right now but I also found two roast and some stew meat.
Do they still have that stupid law about getting a permit to keep deer meat after August?
If so I'm guilty and God forbid if they find a ten year old canning jar of venison! ::)

Maine has a Mexico too.

Why don't you guy's do a potluck type of thing and have a meet and greet in the spring every year. We do that here for all the guy's that go to 2 different deer camp's. It's on a much smaller scale but we get together the 1st sunday in march at The Cap's garage every year. If you can make it you go and bring a dish and your beverage. we have a "cup" that's get passed to the camp that has the largest deer for the season.  It's a great time and no cost. You just need a place to have it. Just don't do it on the first sunday in march so I can crash the party. LOL

Good idea Bogman!! I would give up a day of ice fishing to go. We should have time enough between now and March to come up with a day and place
that works for everyone.
I'm on the eastern part of 5H.

My Sister in Law made some of those in her garden. I luv hot peppers but didn't realize just how hot some of them get, I bit right into one of those babys and thought my tongue was getting blistered, the juice somehow got in my eyes, I thought I was gonna have to go to the Emergency Room; those peppers are absurd,, not for human consumption...

I'm in WMU 6K

Got a stand up today where my camera was getting my buck pictures. Also got the girlfriends 223 zeroed in at 50yds so it'll be on paper when I get it on the bench to dial in the right load. Put about 100 rounds through the 22 between getting it dialed in and the two of us doing some plinking. Had one little buck on each camera, might have been the same deer. Only have one camera out for this week and I left it on video for the first time. The second Moultrie is going back, the display is out... again >:(

Well I'm swimming in tags this year, at least I can make a good sized sandwich out of them if I have another 1 doe year, maybe I can mix them into the hamburg  ;D. I've got 5 in hand plus 1-2 DMAP's available and my girlfriend should get a DMP our third WMU. Almost more tags than I saw deer last season, definitely more than the 3-4 small bucks I saw. Truth is I'd be quite happy with a matched pair. Id be ecstatic to get skunked and have my girlfriend take her first.

thanx. cant say as i have a fav weapon. i live for the challenge n thrill. i was raised a rifle hunter then frontstuffers came into the scene so i took that up, which lead to interest in bowhunting. so now im a well rounded hunter w a variety of freezer
filling utensils and a bitter gf that dreads the thought of septembers arrival. every year i set personal goals (or challenges)
and this years is to tag a buk w my newly inherited great grandfathers winchester 30-30 born in 1906. man if that gun
could talk. lol

thanx for the warm welcome but I'm really ready for sum cooler temps. i received my 1st 30-30 marlin at 15 n have drawn a few foamy blood trails w it and usually dust it off a few times through out the season. more so in the past 3 yrs thanx to hornadys leverevolution ammunition. good stuff! there is just something tugging at the insides to line up the beads on ol mr backstrap w a 3rd generation rifle that's over 100 yrs old and has more stories in its steel than all of us could shake a switch @.
i have actually gotten the ol lady out on the trap field this summer quite a few times and she has done surprisingly well, and made comments about going hunting w me...so... we'll c. she was not raised in an outdoor lifestyle but she def eats her share of venison. I'm going to try n figure out this banner thing I'm not all that technologically talented.

I have, been a while, my uncle owns land just down Sage Creek road on the back side of Taylors Farm...I hunt more off County Route 16, not so much anymore, maybe after work or for a quick sit for a couple days, mostly head north to Osceola or South to Newfield...

I've got no problem harvesting a spike I'm proud of what I harvest regardless of the number of points. The old deer aren't good eating anyway.

Woops looks like I forgot this part....  Sorry...

You can open a free account with  www.photobucket.com, www.myfishingpictures.com, or www.hunt101.com

The following instructions are for photobucket account members:

To post pictures to the site...

1. Follow the Instructions on Photobucket upload your pictures to your Photobucket account.
2. Resize any pictures you'd like to post to a maximum of 400x600 pixels. Larger pictures distort the forum page and take longer to load. This can be done easily in Photobucket using the "Edit" options.
3. Open your photobucket album and find the photo you want to add. Place your cursor over the picture and a drop down menu will appear.Click on "Direct Link" and the link will be automatically copied to your "clipboard".
4. Paste the copied link to your post on MyFishfinder.com.

To add an Avatar picture to your account...

1st - Upload your picture to Photobucket from your computer.
2nd - Resize your picture to no more than 120 x 120 using Photobucket's "Edit" options.
3rd - Right click on the "Direct Link" for that picture .
4th - Open your Iceshanty "profile", then click on "forum profile information" and paste the address to the "I have my own picture" box and check that box. .
5th - Then click on the "change profile" button on the bottom right of that page.
Your avatar should now be displayed in all your posts. You can change your avatar at any time.

For other photo storage sites that don't install the "img" codes onto your photo addresses, you'll have to add them manually.

The "Add BBC tags:" tool bar is at the top of every message dialog below the "Subject" dialog box and the "Message icon". In row above the smilies, click on the 2nd icon from the left...the "Insert Image" icon(it looks like a small picture).

The command [ img][/img] will appear in your text message.
Paste the address of your picture between the commands like this;
[ img]paste your image location here [ /img]
Be sure not to add any spaces or other characters.

Preview your post to be sure your picture is there and then choose post.

I like the referee post. Looks like the challenge is already heating up.Hope everyones having a good summer. Its defenitly been a busy one. Count me in as a north in in as a northern gun again. We need to keep the title in the north. As long as Issiah comes back we should be set. We got some dandy bucks around us this year.

I'm here BuckBlaster, I've yet to see a good one here on the farm, just a couple 1 1/2yr olds so far    I did see a nice 8 over your way last month.  I've gotta find myself a nice one to chase around, I'm getting frantic...  I'll hunt hard regardless, can't wait to get going

Don't fret Issiah I hadn't seen a deer here around the farm with head gear all summer, Dad had 2 8 pt's and a 10 pt all together while I was in Maine right out his window. I went to see my uncle this week about hunting his farm that adjoins ours and he has been seeing a nice 8 with a screwy rack that is dropped on one side along with a buck with "huge" antlers on a regular basis. Hope to get a cam over there this weekend.  Maybe there should be a far east category for us Mass. flatlanders. ;D

yes sir. im 4 miles from the river and never fish it. i fish the lake a couple times a summer but mainly stick to the hard water.
there is quite a healthy herd of deer around these parts but they smarten up quik and bury deep once the rifles start singing. i  actively partake in population reduction but i can only eat so many :D

It's good for the deer but not the best thing for stand hunting here. Last year there was so much feed that they hardly had to move around to get what they needed. I could rake a few up and send you a bag if you need them. ;)

Hehe I may have to take you up on that. The corn around here this year was crap for the most part. They are just cutting it down now and grinding it up into ensilage since its been so dry. The beans did okay in some places you can just tell by looking at the fields from the road. Now if only I had those big healthy acorns I would be set. You know like a fat kid loves cake.

wow corn gettin cut already. Should be good for your early season goose adventures  ;D If we're lucky we might get one or 2 late sept hunts over corn if they get around to cutting a field or 2. Most of ours dont get cut until about halfway through oct. sometimes even later

Hehehe this thread said BS and i didn't see too much happening, so figured I'd get the south going. NOT REALLY FROM MY TRAILCAM... Wasn't trying to lie to my teammates, just a practical joke. Funny thing is I went to check my camera today, and this bruiser was on it. I chased him all last year and only saw him once from 100 yds with my bow, and he's gotten bigger  ;D

Okay, so this one REALLY IS FROM MY CAMERA... I saved the wrong pic, there's a closer one that he looks even bigger on, I'll have to try tomorrow when I'm back up at my mother's where I save all the pictures. There is one other 10 pointer around that I've seen here and there for the last 3 years, but no trail cam pics yet.
