« on: Apr 10, 2011, 08:30:37 PM »
This is where all the pictures and measurements of your birds will go. Just a reminder you need a picture of you, bird and weapon harvest with in one pic. Along with three more pics. Those being right and left spur with a ruler behind them in the pic. The last one being a pic of the beard with a ruler behind it. Let's have some fun good luck everyone.

Well some one has to start!  My shoulder got better but the weather got worse.....  Last weekend was the opener but no luck, no birds on my place then another foot of snow on Friday.  I went out this am and had two jakes calling to me.... not a good sign..... Here are some pics of the hunt and my entry....  Maybe a trip down to the Res in a couple of weeks.

Daybreak was the lightest this am....

It was 20F and a bit of wind.... so the icefishing heater was on...

9am  can you see the bigger one where he dropped, was in full strut.. note new hole in mosquito netting...

Here is a better pic out of the blind..

Pic of me holding bird  and bow at home

My feet with bird and bow

Other offical pics of spurs both measure at 1/8" and beard at 3 1/4"  weight 15lbs........

As they say with smaller walleyes  this will be a good Eater!!!

God blessed me this morning with a great turkey hunt!  My son and I have both been sick all week and my son backed out this morning at the last minute.  My wife asked if I was taking my rain gear and I said "No, if it rains hard enough that I need it, I'll just come home.  I don't need pneumonia".

I didn't expect much as I was going into a new area that is public access and is normally hammered with people.  I found a gobbler on the roost and moved into within about 150 yards.  The lay of the land and the vegetation was perfect for the direction I was coming in.  By the time I located the bird I was past him, so I had to come in from his back side, which was good.  I'm pretty sure they get called to from the other side a lot, but not too often from the back.  I was worried others would hear the gobbling and move in on me, but it never happened.

So I set up about 150 yards away in a bit of a saddle and I had a plan for him to come in from around some brush.  As normal, the turkeys didn't do what I wanted, so when they flew down, they headed through the brush and came in behind me.  I could see them coming through the brush, but I couldn't move.  When the birds came in close, I had both of them at 10 yards, right behind me.  The tom saw my jakester deek and started putting in an inquisitive way, but they didn't run off.  I waited..........

I heard him drumming, so I knew he was strutting, but I could also tell that he had moved off a bit (but I couldn't see them because I didn't dare turn around), so I decided I needed to make a move.  I rolled to my right and turned around.  The hen was still there, in sight, and inside 20 yards.  I was BUSTED!  But she didn't fly?!?  The tom must have seen her looking at me and must have heard my clothing ruffle as I turned, because he popped up over the hill at about 30 yards.  I gave him a full load of 6's and the rest is history.   It started raining just as I got to the truck... :) :) :) :)

I don't know how tight you are on the rules and on the scoring, but I'm calling this a 16 lb bird, 7.5 inch beard, .75 inch spurs.  I guess that makes it score at 46?  Not great, but pretty good for Idaho.  My best ever scored 59.5.  I'm betting some of you eastern guys will laugh at that.

I thought a picture of a scale was required, but I noticed Corny didn't include one.  Am I wrong?

got home tonight and remeasured  spurs w a flexible ruler n they r a bit shorter than originally stated.  and beard is a sixteenth longer so i recalculated.
accurate score is as follows.

19.2 lbs

9.625

15/16   +   7/8 spurs

Your score is 19.125 + 8.75 + 9.375 + 19.125 = 56.375

Can't see the pictures, but the spurs seem especially short for such a nice bird.  What happened?  Are they broken or worn off?
