Weapon for fox hunting

(1/1)

drobertsinMaryland:
Hey guys need some input.  Looking to bag a fox this year and have mounted. I asked my taxidermist if anything special needed to be done in preparation? He responded by freezing it and he would prefer it be taken with a .22 cal. in rib cage area.  My concern is that it will not have enough pop to take down a fox. I plan not to trap the fox so I may have to shot 30-40 yards. What do you all use to hunt foxes? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

luckyduck22:
definatley the 22. if you dont want to destroy it,and a 243. might also do the trick

Buck1985:
.22 mag, 22 hornet, maybe a 22-250

Thanks guys I'll give the 22 cal. a try. I hope to have some pics to share.

johndeere540:
12 gauge with number 4 or 5, 3 inch turkey load. Does a great job and out 30 yard or more you wont be able to tell they are hit. We hunt fox with dogs most of the winter and have super luck with these loads. A 22 or mag has to big of a margin off error and the fox is often wounded. the larger calibers make too big of a hole in the hide. When skun a big dog fox is seldom any larger than a 4 inch coffee can.
