First one of the Spring
« on: Apr 15, 2022, 09:20:56 AM »
Headed down to Va last weekend for the opener. Was cold and the birds didn’t gobble after pitching off the roost. Got lucky Saturday and heard one bird gobble about 9 o’clock. Got luck he strutted his way right to us only time I called was to get him to stop. Picked a few morels as well later that morning. Hopefully this weekend after the warm weather he had  they are fired up more.

Hunted yesterday and my buddy got one. Was a crazy day set up on a bird right off the roost. Started working him and had a bear come in and spook him off.
Couple hours later we struck another bird and worked him for a while before he committed. Figured out why he as only using one leg and was hopping to walk.  Couldn’t believe he came in strutting like that.

Not sure what’s wrong with it wasn’t broke or had any signs of injury, other then the one spur grew sideways.

Was a big spurred bird 1.5 and the crooked spur was just over 1.5.

I have scouted a little but it has been cold and windy and a fair amount of rain. Checked a couple cams and only squirrels, deer and a fisher, but I never get turkeys on cam here in Spring.

That limper was an older tom, surprised he didn't get eaten by a predator, would be tough to fly away. if he can get a running start.
