30.06
« on: Jun 01, 2008, 09:38:58 PM »
I just  Bought a 30.06 Springfield ( Savage bolt with scope ) been out to the range twice with it. This is my first centre fire.
So far I'm 3-4 inches lower right from the centre of the targets , in 1.5-2 inch groupings . I'm using 180gr Rem Cor locks.
Really like my new firearm . Will try my first deer hunt this fall. (Won't forget my shotguns and bird hunting , though )

30-06 is a fine cartridge. 1.5-2 inch group, at 100yds? Very respectable, especially first centerfire and with that one particular factory load.

30-0-6 is my favorite all around caliber...i can use lighter 125 gr loads for varmints, wolves and coyotes and the like, the heavier 180-220 grainers for moose and bear and caribou, and ive even used it for grizzlies without too much fear...the 165 grain rounds are perfect for long range shots on mountain goat and dall sheep...though i prefer overall the 180s. i have successfully hunted moose, caribou, elk, white/blacktail, goat, sheep, grizzly and black bear with few setbacks....youll learn to love it or hate it. good choice Monk

Hi ScottyM, I have a Model 700 Rem  06, and it's a great gun, If you have a friend that reloads you can improve your accuracy by  having him load you some ammo. reloaders can trickle the powder and and get each load right on the money and tighten up your groups. Then if you are happy with the results you can pick up a press and enjoy.
