Md Turkey Season

(1/2) > >>

hesseltine32:
Been a good season here in md this spring I saw a lot of birds and had a lot of close calls before filling both tags.  This year was odd the birds were pretty decoy shy but was nice to hunt as much as I did.

I killed my first last Friday then after that I spent a couple mornings before work trying to kill one with my bow on some backyard birds. It was a big flock of birds 6 gobblers, 3 jakes and 6 or so hens. They would pitch down every morning then work up and down the backyards of a row of houses.  If I could have set up in the yard and hunt it would have been a quick one but with it being so wide open I didn’t want the neighbors seeing me and loosing permission.  So I was setting up just inside the wood line. These birds just wouldn’t leave the yards when they would come through they didn’t care for the decoys much either. Friday I did have two come in to 10 yards but had a tree in the way the whole time.

This morning I set up with just a single hen decoy right on the edge of the yard. Had 4 gobblers come in and had shots at 3 of them but didn’t as the one in the back had a rope and was hoping to get him. Unfortunately he didn’t offer me a shot and they worked on past me.  Hour later I started hearing a bird gobbling up on the ridge they roost on and ditched the bow and grabbed my gun circled around him and set up. I made two calls and he came right in and I shot him at 30.

Headed to Pa to hunt for a few days on next week hopefully the luck continues up there.
