Well I certainly got lucky this time, hunting a new area. :) Hunting during the muzzleloader season allowed me to scout far and wide. I selected a few choice stand locations to allow for changing wind directions. The rut action didn't really get hot and heavy until the evening of Nov 13th as indicated by the numerous fresh tracks all over the place. A large bodied deer actually left me some tracks next to my ground stand overnight. When I sat down at 7:05am the next morning, I heard a snort behind me in the heavy brush. At 8:22am, I heard another snort but this time to my left. Just as I turned my head in that direction, the buck was already 1 step away from disappearing into the thick willows but he made the mistake of stopping for a second to take a look in my direction. His mistake.....that 7mm Rem Mag bullet made it there faster before his decision time was up. ;D Buck went no more than 40 yards before he piled up. Two hours later, my hunting partner, who was 600 yards away from me, shot a similar sized buck. (mainframe 5x5) Being old farts, we tried our hardest to drag them back to the truck that was almost 1 mile away but after our bodies gave up, it was decided to leave them overnight. We dragged them away from their gut piles and hid them under some spruce trees. Covered them with spruce boughs and snow and left our stinky/sweaty T-shirts on the carcusses to ward off the marauding coyotes. It worked! The next morning we returned with my Bravo and made a quick recovery of both bucks. Happy ending for both of us and looking ahead to next year for more scouting opportunities as I expand my knowledge of this new area. I got a good head start this season and all that walking sure paid off. 8)
BTW camera was still on DST :-[
