Title: When did it all begin?
Post by: aquaassassin on Jun 30, 2012, 08:01:53 PM
I saw this question posted on MFF and thought it would be a good topic here..........

When did everyone begin hunting and fishing?

I started fishing in 1987 at 2 years old. My father would cast out my old Zebco 202 and hold a hand on the rod while I fought and cranked in my first Brookies. I was hooked ever since.

I started hunting with my dad in the 1992 season at age 8 with my red and black plaid jacket and pants and green Kamik rubbers with a wool orange hat, I would just tag along behind him and watch every little thing he did soaking it in like a sponge in the deer woods. I could never stand still or be quiet and still can't but if I am in the woods or on the water I can get lost in the zone and don't make a peep and have all the patience in the world. When I was 9 I harvested my first animal a snowshoe hare with an old single shot 16 ga. that had duct tape on the barrel to hold it to the stock, remember it like it was yesterday running my cousins beagles..........  good times!

My father really got me into fishing at a young age. I think I won my first junior bass tournament in 1989. Thats right I was 8. Fished several years before that too. Shame I got away from in my teen years girls and partying is what I did. I could have been the next KVD. >:( Wait a minute I probably still could be. ;D ;D

I started hunting at the age of 12. Dad would take me out out with him before that though.

Started fishing with my uncle Harold and my brother in his boat way back when 1969 , He got around on crutches , Went Turkey hunting in the fall of 1974 I
think remember that trip real well . him and me pulled his camper down to Pawlet VT.  his son in law Chris met us down there hunted all day Saturday Chris got one
just started haven Turkey hunting in the state they released 13 birds from Pennsylvania If I remember right . Anyway supper time came I brought some steaks they
were still frozen took a hatchet on a fence post cleaned the BIRD POOP off the top of the post and split the steaks apart had for supper still taste good  :P Never forget that when he told my mother what I did  :) :) :) That what I learned what hunting camp was all about , Have breakfest put your silverware on the table and flip your
plate over so the flies don't get at it come back flip over and eat again ,He always talked about the time I went turkey hunting with him , He sure could get around the woods with those aluminum crutches though . Been hooked Every since Those were the day's Started deer hunting the same fall  ;) ;D ;D ;D

Really don't remember but I know Dad and his buddies carried me on their shoulders When we went coon hunting. All my first experiences with Hunting was with a Hound of some sort. Bear, Coon or Hare. Didn't start Deer hunting until mid teens. There weren't any deer here to speak of to hunt anyway.
Fishing was either salt water Tatog ,porgy's, Bluefish or Ice cold trout streams of the white Mtn's in N.H. I would spend weeks at dad's camp with my Grandparents. I would get Nana or Gramp's to drop me off at one location and pick me up down stream at a given time. I was late a lot which is probably why I'm Early for everything now. ;D ;D

I don't remember exactly when I started fishing, but distinctly remember bullheads at the farm across the street when I was between 5 and 8.  Haven't stopped since.

I do remember going to our family's hunting camp as well as a blind in an orchard (probably before I was five), but first hunting experience in the field wasn't unit when I was 14 or so.  Guy mom was dating would take me, and I would sit in the blind with him.  He was a butcher and chef by trade, so I saw him break down and package a lot of deer in the basement of his restaurant for friends.  He used to have me come over and skin them for him so he could go down and process them in between sending meals out of the kitchen.  Funny thing though, I never got my license back then.  I never took my hunter safety course until about eight or nine years ago.  In a way, I look back and consider that fifteen years of my life wasted.  Still waiting on my first deer....

I started bow hunting at 14 I think, whenever it was legal for me. Had been shooting a bow for a few years already. I think I hunted two years with only nicking a nice 6pt. I stopped hunting and started partying for a while. In my early to mid twenties (maybe?) I dusted the old bow off and started hunting again. Didn't hunt with a gun until probably my late twenties. Still not real into it, usually just sit in a bow stand like last years ML buck at five yards. Always liked rabit hunting more than any other critter but no longer have anywhere to do it since I got escorted off the best bunny spot in the state by three different flavors of cops at once :-\. Still don't think we were trespassing, and the judge tossed the charges  ;). I've been fishing since I could hold a line.

I started hunting and fishing with my buddies from the neighborhood I grew up in....most of their families were into hunting so I always heard story's of big bucks and going to hunting camps.....I stayed in my first camp at 12 years old and knew at that point I would always be a hunter...sadly I don't have many pictures of deer I have taken.....I started fishing around age 11 or 12 my friend Lloyd and I would carry our lanterns down to the racQuette river at dusk and fish for bullheads.....a few years later my grandpa would take me to Coles creek after I helped him finish chores on the farm.....he would even let me drive his new gmc truck n the way home :o. We had an agreement that I could fish as long as I wanted  but I had to return all the fish cleaned to him the next day  ;D I wish he was still alive so I could do that one more time

I'm sure I had a stickpole in my hand by age 3. I was finally able to go deer hunting with the MEN at age 5, my dad had to carry me across the beaver pond and the wool clothes were itchy.

The first deer I remember them getting was at age 6 and I spotted it from the back seat of a VW bus on the way to camp not far from home. It was an 8 pointer about 100 yds off the road in a sand pit. I said: "there's a deer and its got horns"; my dad pulled right over, his buddy Dave got out, ran up the hill, loaded and shot. The buck had ran to the far end of the pit and it was a long shot, it took a while to track but we finally found it. My grandfather and another guy were waiting at camp and wondered what happened; they were mad when they found out why. ;D To this day that woodlot near the highway doesn't hold deer, definitely was strange to see a buck there in the 70s when the numbers were way down. It was November and he must have been searching for does.

Here's a big smallie from July 1980, Lake George; I saw it swim by, ran to the next dock and made one cast with a Big O crankbait(still have it):

Have to look through my photos to find some old hunting ones.

That's a giant smallmouth. The one good thing about low deer populations is that the bucks have to travel.

Post by: jlaclair on Jul 06, 2012, 02:47:58 PM
Started fishing in 1988 at age 2 with my dad and poppy at camp and on the st. lawrence, one of the first things I remember catching on a rod was a bull frog, but brook trout were right up there, then it moved on to drifting smallies on the big river, caught my largest though (over 7lbs) on a smaller lake when I was 10...I began walking through the woods with my dad at age, he was all ways the driver "Bucky" and "Buck's Nuts" are his nicknames, the man always seems to see bucks, which seems to be my case to, if I see a deer, it usually sports some bone. Started with a bbgun shooting frogs, birds and rodents, I have learned a lot from my father and his, just tagging along. When doing drives, you seem to learn a lot more because you see more, which is great for kids because it keeps them moving and interested, thats how I will start my son soon. I only recently took up stand hunting because I mainly bow hunt now, but something about driving at camp you cant beat. Started carrying the .22 marlin and the NE 20ga when I was 10, got into Bow hunting when I was 12 and my whole family shot in a league every week. Started shooting deer around that time too, been to Canada once hunting, and have shot several deer since then... I love it, I think about it non stop all day every day, and am thankful for my father and his, and his. Its a great passion to have for body and soul. Hopefully I can get into the ECO's and see future generations with the same passion.

Quite literally as I was typing this, FedEx showed up with my sons 3rd birthday present from me, its just a toy, but I got him a bow...He will be 3 on Monday, He loves watching me shoot and watching the hunting shows...figure we will work on form and safety and in a couple years he can have the real deal, then move up from there. I am so happy and proud.

Bout time this thread took off! I thought it was gonna be a dud and it would of been a shame I tell ya 8). Here are a couple. I know, I know, it's blurry and it is not really me it could be Charlie Moore ::) ;D. This is me with a Hare from When I was 8. My dad is a big time rabbit hunter and loves running beagles. It is what I grew up on in my early years. I didn't get to deer hunt a ton because my father worked so many hours that time of year and football litterally controlled my life so much that I could maybe go 2 or 3 times a year anyway until I got my drivers license. Here are my first two deer when I was 16, a 146 lb. 4 pt. with the recurve and a 115 lb. 6 pt. in full velvet with the compound.......

Well i have hunted since i was 12 (small game ) and bow hunted whitetails since i turned 14. always followed my father and older brother out on watch to learn all that i could. My first deer was a doe in southern tier at the age of 18. could not tell ya anything about the size but was the most adrenaline i have ever had in the woods. HOOKED!!!
Never harvested deer with my bow until i was 20. persistent i guess. just loved to be in the woods with the challenge of a bow. still primarily hunt deer and turkey with the bow.

Here's my grandfather, he's a big reason for me getting into the outdoors. He was a self taught gunsmith and ran "Johnson's Gun Shop" out of his garage in South Glens Falls for many years; he was the guy to go to if no one else could fix it, guys came down from all over the Adirondacks. I spent a lot of time there in the shop, looking through everything, and there was lots of old stuff around. There were several old-timers that would stop by regularly and I would listen to the stories, sometimes they would bring a buck or rack by to show him; always saw lots of cool guns and knives, etc. I have the rack from his biggest buck, pretty wide 8 pointer, dressed out at 220 lbs; shot it on top of Buck Mtn. overlooking Lake George. I also have the gun he shot it with, an 1873 Winchester in 44-40; first gun he ever bought, too, paid $5 for it.

My family's roots are deep in this area, the back of the picture has this written: "age 84, at the graves of his great-great grandparents, Porter Smalley b. April 19, 1775 and Hilda Gale b. April 22, 1776." Taken at Baker Cemetary, Sandy Hill(Hudson Falls, NY)  8)

Neat JJ!! My family has been here since the 1700's as well....they owned a lodge in North River called Toags....Was the stop over for the stage and Pony Express....My great grand dad and grand father were loggers....all with horses....At times they would have 6-8 teams working in various places....We had a couple farms...where Cunninghams ski barn is and where Barton Mines Grain mill is on the Hudson....They had a total of 2000 acres in 1960 my father said....but the state bought one plot to move route 28 and the other Barton bought to move the processing plant....state took some when my grand father got sick from mustard gas poisoning......Dad quit school to try to save the farm...but alas he couldn't and gram sold it....
Gramps first guides license was numbered 003....dads was not much higher....they guided hunters every fall...mostly the O'Keefes....a family of Doctors from Glens Falls....They loved the camp and the way gramp and the boys would take care of their every need....and My grand mothers cooking.... 8) 8) 8) 8)

Great story Scott...

Wish I knew the story of my roots,(or maybe not  ::) ) but that was lost when my dads, dad died young....  All I know was that the spelling of our last name changed several times when the old timers came over on the boat...

LOL...just re read my post....the year was 1940 when dad quit school....he was born in 1924 and quit at 16...he carried lunches on the Hudson for the river drivers....and then work as one(river driver) for a few years...even though he couldn't swim a stroke... until he took my mother and his two young boys to Wards lumber in Tahawas....wish the scanner was working....all the pictures from there are cool...he worked 8 hours driving a dozer skidding...then dinner and off to load trucks by hand until 11pm....then off to sleep in the cold shack they were put up in....and back at it at 5am..to get the equipment running and warm to go to work...they would put large steel bins of coals under the dozers and trucks to keep them warm overnight....My mother thought the babies would freeze most of the time....one little box stove for heat....Dad would be up all night adding wood.....
The men and women of just a mere few years in time as the world is concerned, were tough as nails.....Just a different breed...

Learned the way of the woods from Dad.....he always seemed have a unhurried, calm in the woods....he knew where game was to be found...where it would go when pressured....exactly where to find a trout with a trolled Hinckley and a worm.....The best spot to set a trap for big beaver, and otter.....Remember a set he picked for a fox.....he was just making conversation with me as he was setting it....said we should get 5-6 fox from this one....and we did!!  He loved to sit by the fire at night into camp and hoot to the bears....had many come in pretty close.....He would always laugh when I would get nervous....Then when one splashed into the pond we were bullhead fishing on....thought he and my brother would crawl out of the boat and try to swim to shore.....Dad seemed to forget he couldn't swim.....But he taught me to never hurry when your given time to be in the field.......why now when I do get a chance to go...it's for the day...never try to "squeeze" other things in....enjoy what you can, and don't take it for granted...... 8)

Thought of a funny story from my first year carrying a rifle for deer....My brother and three of his buddies came up to hunt back into Ross pond area....I wanted in real bad, and since it was a week day my mother of course said no....
So after she and Dad left for work, Dad called back to the house and said hey go with them.... ;D ;D ;D I had about 2 minutes to get my gear on and we were off....Now a three mile hike to get to start hunting was rough on the young guy...especially carrying the rucksack with all the beer for the "growd up" guys.... ::) ::) ::)I made the first drive with Rick....no deer seen....we made another off that hill through a swamp....no sign....so Fred says lets go make gramps drive and we'll have lunch at the old clearing where my grandpa had his camp.....Dave and Rick headed to go drive it, and Fred, Tom and I went to watch....They put me just off this steep bank next to a small brook, and said the deer will come from over that'a way....OK!! I'm ready...set up in a blown over Beech.....nice watch....except real close to the steep bank, and with the brook couldn't hear a thing....Well after about 25 minutes I thought I heard a whistle....up behind me.....looked over my right shoulder to see what it was.....Thumping noises to my left....glance back, and deer everywhere....Filing in like cattle.....Crap, I'm turned the wrong way, JEEPERS!!! Horns...big high and wide....He settled in with all the doe's and I lost him....getting turned back to the left.....There he is, head goes back down....which one was it????? Dang it!! Head pops up, (I may have said Dang it outloud)....Settled the sights on the shoulder....wham!!!  Was like a covey of partridge going out of there...Tails bouncing!!! Another shot was impossible....No idea which deer was him....So waited for Rick and Dave to come out....They were laughing so hard when they got there....I guess Rick had made this jump from one log to another, and spun back to Dave and said...ordinary man would have fallen right there....then turned to go and both feet went up over his head and flop!! on the leaves and dirt next to the log....yup, ordinary my brother says.... 8) 8)

So after looking for what seemed like forever we couldn't find blood.....Dave says go where you shot from and lead me to it....So he is walking left to right in front of me....I say stop!! Right there...HUH, he grunted....well you got close....There was a balsam right in front of where he stood...guess he was scenting the doe with his head down when I shot....he stuck all 10 points right into that big tree(thing was at least 20" across)...and raked up about 8-10 inches.....yup..I missed...again....Was a long day after that....course a little uncomfy without the tail to my shirt....I redeemed myself the next weekend and shot a spike while driving to my other brother...but never will forget the chance at my first trophy buck.... They didn't let me forget hoppy either for quite a while.... ::) ::) ::)

My Dad took me hunting with him when I was seven years old. He got me red and black plaid Woolrich coat and pants for deer season and a tan Redhead coat and briar pants for small game because I wanted to be just like Dad.  During small game season I'd walk with Dad and watch his every move since I couldn't really hunt (carry or shoot a gun).  During deer season I'd sit with Dad and he'd tell me storys about hunting and show me lots of things.  My Dad did the same with my Brother and I'm sure he will again with his Granddaughters.  I thought I was the king of the world because of these times and wouldn't trade a second of any of those times for all the money in the world, which I'm sure my Brother feels the same way.  I hunt with my Brother as much as we can and am always hunting with Dad when ever he goes.  These are memories I hold and will hold as some of my most sacred since it was time with Dad and now he's getting up in years I sadly know there will be a season when he is not with me.

this is a great thread! Hunting doesnt really run in my family I mean I have great uncles that hunt but never really see them or talk to them about it. I took the hunters safety course the summer before my sophmore yr in college and hunted that fall. I only hunted deer with a single shot shot gun for the first 3 yrs then I met a good buddy and he got me more into scouting, hunting in tree stands, secent control, and other aspects of hunting like waterfowl. He took me duck/goose hunting one morning while we were up at school and I got my first kill, it was a canadian goose I still can see the flame barking out of the end of the barrel. That is when I really became a hunter and things changed. That summer I took the bow safety course and I have been hunting archery for about 3-4yrs now. I owe a lot of what I know about hunting and fishing to him.

no clue how I didn't notice this thread. Nice pictures everyone, I love seeing the older/vintage photos. I got started fishing around 2-3. I remember the good ol zebco reel. throwing worms on bobbers all day waiting for it to go under. catching a sunfish then was like catching a tuna now. I remember when I was around the same age my dad used to bring me out in the woods with him and sit me on a tree. he would say look for deer to come running through in about 10 minutes. he pushed deer by me just so I would want to hunt with him when I got older. the only deer I actually remember seeing from being so young was a monster buck (who knows could have been a spike) but at the time it was a stud. around 5 my dad started to come get me everytime that he shot a deer that was local. He would have me try to track it following the blood trail even though he had found it earlier. I would still go help him do that to this day. I was finally able to hunt when I turned 10 in 2001. I couldn't wait. I didn't have a bow yet so it was only gun for me. I did go sit in stands during archery and took pictures of the deer I saw with my moms camera. my dad was pissed when one day I came back with a picture of a nice 8 that he could have shot if he went to that stand instead of another. I got my first deer in 2001, remember like it was yesterday. I was sitting at a tree with my grandfather whom I spent a lot of hours in the woods with until his death of 2009. my dad did a drive to us and I shot a 107 pound 4 pointer. from then on out it has been an addiction every year. I have been successful every year since except for the year my football team when deep in the playoffs and I only spent 3 days in the woods.

Here is a picture of my first deer at age 10
(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab73/tjjenkins52/IMG_20120907_205230.jpg)

Here is me and the old man at age 11, my 188 pound 8 pointer

As im sure most of you guys and your family is the same way, hunting is a huge part of mine. at my grandfathers house there is a wall in the basement with every deer that every one of his kids, and his grandkids have shot. we kept the tradition going after he died and the wall is pretty full. wish I had a picture of the entire wall but here is a sample, someday I will count them all and take a picture.

As I recall, I started pretty early hunting with my father & grandfather...probably and 7 or 8.  At first, I just tagged along in the car and played in the field while the pheasant hunted.  Then I got to walk behind them at a safe distance away from the guns and dogs...as I got older I became one of the dogs, that is I walked/pushed the thickets and briers while they hunted along the edges waiting for birds to flush.  I distinctly recall grouse hunting through dense pines and overgrown orchards...while Dad took the easy path outside and encouraged me too keep up with his pace.  By 13 (NY passed the law to allow 12+ to hunt), I was legally able to small game hunt with my grandma's single shot 410.  At 14, I got the family hand-me-down Bear bow and I was climbing trees and waiting for a deer to come through.  When I turned 16, I purchased my first gun...a used Browning BPS 12 gauge shotgun which I paid half and my father paid the other half...because I'm left-handed and needed a gun suited for my needs.  Friday after Thanksgiving, I harvested my first deer, a basket 7 point buck.

By 18, I purchased my first compound bow...a new PSE Thunderflite which I paid half and my father paid the other half...because I'm left-handed and the family bow was right-handed.  I harvested my second deer, a spike buck that my Dad had wounded the week before and we lost due to rain.

I've been hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and playing outdoorsman ever since!!   ;D
