Hunter dies when he shoots himself climbing into tree stand

WINTHROP, N.Y. (AP) -- A 57-year-old hunter died when he accidentally shot himself while using a tree stand, state police said.
The body of Raymond Pepin of Winthrop was discovered at 1:18 p.m. Sunday beneath the tree stand after he failed to return home for lunch, state police said.
Investigators said it appeared Pepin was standing on the tree stand's ladder and was fatally wounded when his rifle discharged as he placed it on the foot of the stand. Pepin was hit in the chest.
State police were continuing to investigate.
Winthrop is in St. Lawrence County, about 15 miles south of the Canadian border.
