I havent been so excited in all the years I've been Turkey hunting, as this one. Been scouting multiple hours a day for weeks. The moment I've been waiting for a while as a dad came today. My boys first hunt with his own gun this morning. No birds down but we had a blast. What a gift it was to just sit in the early morning woods with gobblers sounding off, as daybreak cracks on the horizon.
Plenty of action, they just wouldn't commit. We had one roosted close in a tree, bastard flew down, strutted about 80-100 yds away, then walked the other way...lol not interested in our dekes. The other gobblers farther off seemed to hookup with hens right after fly down. Sat for a few hours more, fields went empty, except for a few deer feeding. As expected, boy got fidgety.
So we Went to another spot that we watched 2 big Tom's last night. Ended up bumping them on the way in to setup spot by mistake. Little frustrating for him, he didn't understand we couldn't just chase after them, doesn't work that way...lol
I didn't want to push him hard on his first day, so we headed for home a little early.
All in all, great experience. Lots of lessons in patience today, for both of us... lol.
Actually it's probably good I didn't make it look too easy, he'll appreciate it more in the long run and understand it takes work and persistence.
We'll hit it again in the morning, adjust a little, maybe that gobbler will come our way this time.
Anybody else get a youth out today?
