Title: Did some research...
Post by: whitesquall on Nov 28, 2011, 05:03:34 PM
I was looking into Maine's skull & antler records and found that my grandfather on my mothers side shot, (what I think) is the 13th highest scoring Typical ever.

The information I have on it is that it was shot on November 16th, 1946, it was 10 points and scored 181 1/8th B&C.  :o

Unfortunately my grandfather past away long before I was born. Last I knew the mount of the deer was at my uncles house as well as the gun it was shot with. I'm currently trying to reach out to him and my cousins to get a picture and any other information on this deer.

Does anyone have any more information on Maine skull & antler records?

That is awesome! I was just reading about the Arthur Young buck in north american Whitetail. The antlers were around for 135 years before they were scored at 175 4/8 net and is now the No.10 largest typical whitetail taken in Penn.  :o

His name was Clarendon Pomeroy but he went by Skeet Pomeroy most of the time. The information I found on the deer had the name Skeet. He was from the Newport / Pittsfield area where my mother grew up.

Thanks Tally

here what i have, you probably already know this, 181 1/8 it only had 4 deductions and had 10 pts. it was shot in waldo county in 1946 and registered to the me skull and antler club in 1984. it says Skeet Pomeroy/L.C. Pomeroy; Burnham, ME. i have a pic of it being held by Larry pomeroy.

Sweet! Tally I owe you a beverage or 2  :D    What is the book you have with the information in it?

Larry in my Uncle, he is the one who has the mount still.

I got a hold of my cousin this afternoon and she is going to get some pictures to me when she gets a chance.

If it's not a lot of trouble I would love to see it. I haven't seen it since I was 7, so I vaguely remember it.

I love hearing the family history!  I too have some awesome history with a deer and gun.  My two Great Grandfathers on my Mother's side always hunted together.  In 1946 (I think it was), on of them shot this monster on family land that we still own...

Notice the crutch in this photo, he had two wooden legs and still hunted.

We still have the mount (it's in excellent shape).  And the best part is about 3 years ago my Uncle gave my the gun my Great Grandfather used to kill this deer.  He told me I don't care what you do with it, just don't ever sell it.  I kept it on the gun rack for a few years and it wasn't until late last season I said I was going to kill a deer with it.  I only hunt with it when I'm still hunting/tracking and on the first Sunday of New Hampshire's gun season I was able to shoot a 180 lbs 6 pointer with the gun, I was pumped!  The gun still shoots great and everyone that has handled it/shot it agrees that it is a sweet little gun (Remington Model 14, 32 caliber).

There is so much about your old photos that make them great. The massive deer, the car, the house covered in vines?, the outfit (especially the bean boots ;D ), family, and the rifle. It's great.

It's also awesome that you used the gun to take a deer, great memories.

I have the .45 cal Hawken my grandfather used to take a few bucks, as well as my fathers Winchester model 64 that has taken many many deer. I hope to one day shoot a deer with them.

that is the one at earls place!  i imagine my brotherinlaws dad will end up w/ it when earl dies and he isnt too well now. the controversy was that it had 17 pts and the b&c computer was programmed to record a maximum of 16 typical pts. this caused them to claim the 17th point as non typical which gave it a deduction to 191 6/8 from 192 7/8. that guy holding the rack btw is  DILL HOLE!

Very cool photos and monster deer. I wonder if  great granddad hunted wearing a shirt and tie or put it on for the photo.
