My 06' Buck
« on: Dec 04, 2006, 07:02:49 AM »
Finally got him yesterday...was beginning to think I was going to go without this year... hes a 7pt with a 16.5 inch inside spread 135 lbs.  He has been shot earlier this year and I cant tell how much meat is ruined, but hopfully I will be able to salvage most of it.  The old wound is very clean with no gangrene and it doesn't stink, but I guess I'll know more when I skin him.  I had to cross a creek to get him and ended up in up to my waist, cold doesn't even begin to describe it, but at the time I was so pumped I couldn't have cared less.  Got him at 75 yards in the neck and he dropped like a sack of hammers....Now I can get out the tipups and get new leader line and hooks on them.  Hopefully it wont be long before we're back out on the hardwater....Good luck with the rest of your seasons guys

Where was he hit before? i got one ten years ago that had been hit with an arrow high and I knew things weren't good when the hair was falling out as I dragged him. Ended up having to jump through a bunch of hoops with the local DEC to get a new tag.

The old wound is on the opposite side of the deer as it appears in the pic.  The wound looks to be that of an arrow, a shot that someone took almost straight down on him...it goes in high just missing the spine almost up in the neck(not effecting the backstraps or loins thank god) and comes out halfway down the ribs on the same side looks like it passed just under the skin and never hit vitals...as his lungs and heart were all flawlessly intact.  The wounds are very clean just a lot of puss cuz they were healing but they do not stink and they are not gangrenous

Nice buck man! I've had bad experiences with .280's My father shot a nice 9 pointer at like 200 yards, took out both lungs, and I swear to god the deer ran over a mile before finally piling up! Then my buddy shot a 201 lb 10 pointer last year with a .280 and they had to track it atleast a mile, and that was a good shot also. I just don't like them, I'll stick to the model six .270, or the ol' 30-30!

I have heard that about the 280 's also. You never know each deer is so different I have shot about 18 deer with my pistol its a 41 magnum i have hit deer  in the lungs in the same spot some have went twenty feet and others have went 200 yards. just amazes me how strong willed some of the deer are.
