What gun to use???
« on: Sep 13, 2010, 03:16:52 PM »
well im going to be bear hunting this year for my first time, i was wondering what gun/bow to use??
Remington 700- 7MM rem mag- 3-9x40 scope
Mossburg 500-  12GA-rifled barrel, 3-9x40 scope
CVA 30-06- 3-9x50 scope
or the trusty old bow
Parker Hornet 2, 68 lbs draw weight, rage broadheads
and the spot i will be hunting is a small flatt, open hard woods, out of a tree stand, thanks for any advice

I have never hunted bear before and would love to say I took one with my bow. But if it was my first time I would have to say I would take a rifle.. And a Rem 700 would be a good gun to have... ;D

I have been involved in bear hunting for 20+ years. All of the weapons you named will work but I prefer 7MM or 30-06

I would want to use a bow or a 30-06. I do agree with aquaassassin the bow would be an awesome rush.

My prefered bear weapon is a Marlin 1895GS chamber in 45-70.  Kills em' dead.  I'll post some pics when I get time.
Keep your gunpowder dry and your fishing hooks wet.

From your list I'd use the 7mm Remington Magnum.  Personally I use my .338-378 Weatherby Magnum or my 8mm Remington Magnum.

I wouldn't take the bow if it's the first time hunting bear .All of the guns you discribed are good ,although I would have to say that for me a 7mm magnum would be a bit over kill ? I have shot many bears over the years ,the largest being a record  bear both in weight ( over 450lbs ) as well as being book which I took with a 243 ! Shot placement is more important then caliber size ,and I can hear the rumblings already ........but shot placement is the best way to go .My record bear I shot in the neck ,many have died from lung shoots useing the 243 as well .Once you have a few under your belt and understand what it's all about then give the bow a try .....................my thoughts

Yep, I have, with the right shot placement you can take 1 w/any rifle except a 22, maybe!

Cool, I have the chance to buy a used 30-30, I know they are good on deer.  I want to get it for my Northern zone hunting instead of my .270.

Well where we hunt ,Manitoba , I have seen a hunter ( there is also a guide who sets up bait's in the area ) shoot a bear three times with a 300mag ?? A little 250 LBS bear ? claimed that it was still moving and he "" Didn't want to take any chances ! "" ? Seems people take Big Guns when they aren't sure that they can get the job done with something else ? Any deer rifle will take down a bear ,just put the shoot where it needs to be and it's a done deal .Never shoot a bear that I had to track ,dropped in there tracks each time with the 243.This year I'll try with the bow or Muzzle loader instead ,just for fun !

working for a guide here in maine, I've seen bear and moose run a quarter mile w/ lungs/ heart destroyed! if you don't want to drag thru. a swamp, use the 7mm in 175 grns. if hit good, chances are he's not going anywhere. its a cartridge thats very popular in this area for its versatility.

I'm with mooseslayer71, I used a Remington 700 Classic in 7mm Rem Mag with 175gr Grand Slams. It was also the most accurate load in my rifle. It worked perfectly, the rifle and bear are actually in my profile pic.

All calibers are great with good shot placement ; I have always used a 243 for years & Switched to a 7mm-08
now I now I hit them when I squeeze the trigger , The 243 goes so quick some times you don't see no reaction
but in your mind you now you hit them good ; You got to use what is comfortable for you , Remember shot placement....
