I have an H & R single shot in 17 HMR. It is incredibly accurate, you can hit a dime at 50 yards almost every time. If the wind is blowing accuracy drops off pretty quickly due to the light bullet. I took a woodchuck with mine at about 120 yards- left a nickel sized hole right between the eyes... but almost no penetration. It is about the perfect squirrel rifle. I know guys have killed coyotes with them- but in my opinion, it's too little gun. Almost no recoil, but pretty loud though.

I have a Marlin 17 with the bull barrel ,equipped with a Burris 3-9 ballistic-plex scope  , I like it.   I've shot a few coyotes with it and killed them instant but it was all head shots except one lucky running shot to the chest that also worked.    I use mine for squirrels and chucks mostly. they make 17 grain and 20 grain bullets both which are effected by the wind greatly.    On calm days the accuracy is very impressive.
On you tube there is a video comparing a 17 with a 22   , a pop can and a coin trick.
