Awesome pics. The wolf pic is great but I completely understand they aren't going to help anything with the numbers they've gotten to.

It is somewhat of a challenge to NOT run and check it more often! Hope to check it tomorrow after work and see what I got this week. It is about a 20-25 minute drive and then a 30 minute walk into first camera and then another 20 minute walk to 2nd camera.

Can we have trailcams again now in Montana? For a few years there I remember we couldn't have them out because the regs said we couldn't have them out during any hunting season and because of deer, turkey, bear, cougar, sheep, moose, etc. there was always something going so I was never able to put mine out. Has this changed or are you only able to put them out during the short periods between seasons? If we can put them out again now I want to put some out here on my place and try to catch site of some of the cougars around here.

As far as I know and how I read/understand regs " we can have them out BUT not during any hunting season" I am also going to email FWP and ask them for an interpretation.

the law reads :

Motion-Tracking Devices and/or
Camera Devices
It is illegal for a person to possess or
use in the field any electronic or camera
device whose purpose is to scout the
location of game animals or relay the
information on a game animal's location
or movement during any Commission adopted
hunting season.

The way you read them is the way I do too then. Unfortunately the only time of the year there isn't a hunting season over here(Sanders county) is during the summer and that is when I have to do a lot of traveling to get my kids over in Washington and we do a ton of fishing plus work gets really busy at that time too. I wonder what it would take to get them to change that law to be no remote check trail cams? The way I heard it was they were trying to prevent live monitoring of game so if that is true then the regular ones like you and I have should be fine, if we could get the law changed. But then again maybe there were other reasons they made it that way?
Title: Re: Montana Trail-cam
Post by: zimmer2 on Jul 02, 2012, 09:46:44 AM
I just sent the ?'s to FWP to ask if that means "any" season. You are correct in that if that really means "all" seasons we are very limited. There are special seasons before/after general seasons for bear-turkey- mt lion-ducks-upland bird ..........etc. So does the law include all of these? Right now as far as I am aware of there is not a season open. So mine are out for now until archery season opens the first part of September.

Please post back with what they tell you. I'd really like to be able to put mine out but I also don't want to get fined or anything for doing something that is supposed to be a fun way to see what animals are here on the property I live on.

My original question:
Motion-Tracking Devices and/or Camera Devices
It is illegal for a person to possess or use in the field any electronic or camera
device whose purpose is to scout the location of game animals or relay  the
information on a game animal’s location or movement during any Commissioned adopted hunting season

Does this make it illegal to have trail cams out during spring bear, spring turkey, waterfowl, mountain lion, etc. seasons for any big game animals?

Here is the respose back from FWP:

The purpose of the law is to restrict the use of a trail cam as an aid to and for the purpose of hunting. You could have it out during those seasons if you are not hunting  any of those species. However, I would suggest you be prepared to explain how and why you are not hunting should you be asked by a warden.
Title: Re: Montana Trail-cam
Post by: Cornbread on Jul 02, 2012, 11:57:02 AM
Sweet! That will be easy enough for me. I don't buy tags for anything I am not going to hunt so I can easily prove I am not hunting 90% of all the odd seasons and even some of the regular ones like bear, turkey etc.

It is HOT now but when you get here and depending where you are at  "you might be glad to have that coat" Hope yoyu ENJOY  your visit.

I was disappointed this week. With 2 cameras out for a week I only got 1 coyote and that was it! Moved both cameras so hopefully will find the elk again.

I will be in west yellowstone for the first week and a half and then up to east glacier for the last week and a half.  I see that the fires have been pretty active your way.  I check pretty much every couple of days.  Just coming out to visit and see if someday I can just pick up and move that way.  Looks like my kind of state and I just might stay.....wishful thinking!

Do not be afraid to ask if you need info. Should see some wlidlife in both parks. Elk #'s are down for sure in Yellowstone but should see some none the less. Do you fish also? Lots of trout fishing on your way between the parks.

Sure sounds like you are going to do it up right! I am not a fly fisherman so I do not use boots/waders, I guess when I do fish in the rivers and creeks I just wear my tennis shoes  :) I did look at the regs quick and did not see any thing but you can go here .http://fwp.mt.gov/doingBusiness/contactUs/ (http://fwp.mt.gov/doingBusiness/contactUs/) and either call or email and ask the FWP the question

fly fishing will be your best bet but you will surely catch fish on that tackle also, be sure and check the regs where you will be fishing as the regs change across the state and around yellowstone there are a lot more restrictions. You will catch fish either way but just be sure you are not fishing in a way you could get into trouble. You can stop at any local sporting goods store and "most" will tell you how and where to catch fish.

I really do not do a lot of summer fishing, I ice fish for the most part but will occassionly hike into a mountain lake. Good way to fish and see wildlife at the same time.

well I am sure to do a ton of hiking as well.....laughing (i am already packed) .....thanks for the info...........we do not do to much summer fishing in NY either but I am known to drop a line in a time or two during the summer but it is a little slow for trout fishing in the creeks here....I ice fish as well but didnt get out only once this past season but there is always next year.....again thanks for the info.

Are you coming through this area at all? If you do you should fly fish the Thompson River,  it doesn't get the press some of our other trout fisheries do but it is an awesome fly fishing experience. It is right down the road from me by ten miles or so. When you are here open carry outside city limits is legal and we have grizzlies so at least a good can of bear spray is a good plan in some places if you don't want to pack a shotgun with slugs or a hand cannon. It isn't Alaska by any means but especially when fishing or berry picking or any other activity where bears have the same plan as us humans and I am there with my kids I open carry a .454, the local game warden carries a .475 Linebaugh on his off days fishing up here in some areas so I don't think I am being paranoid, just cautious :)

Thompson river is in NW Montana it runs from Lower Thompson lake down to the Clark Fork between Plains and Thompson Falls. It runs right under Hwy 200. There are two roads that parallel it, Thompson River Road on the West side and the Plum Creek Timber County Road on the east side. The east side has the better access points and more of them but it can be accessed from both roads: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=47.580036,-115.241413&hl=en&num=1&t=h&z=17  (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=47.580036,-115.241413&hl=en&num=1&t=h&z=17)

I will definitely be checking the area out and close by the looks of what is on the map.....you guys are giving me great areas to focus on and I appreciate it.............wish I could hit the entire state...........where are some good places to check out the hunting????? That is going to be my main focus so I can get in on a tag or two myself maybe for next year if available...............

I'm probably not the right guy to ask about hunting spots because I buy an elk tag each year but I never end up going anymore because I don't have anyone to go with and packing out an elk solo isn't exactly a ton of laughs. Deer hunting I do generally right around my house on private tree farms I have permission to hunt on so I don't drive anywhere I just walk there from my place and if I get something I drive the truck as close  as I can and haul it to that. I hunt for meat so the first legal deer I see each year in range gets my arrow(I hunt with a longbow). I live alone so that fills my meat freezer for the year although this year I may elk hunt and get a chest freezer because I ran out of space in my freezer this year for fish etc. so I may try elk hunting again if work permits. Deer in this area aren't as thick as they are up in say the Seeley Swan area but it works OK for me because I don't like having to drive to hunt.

Fishing I can help a lot with though because I fish all over down here, often several times a week from boat or shore, rivers or lakes etc. I can help with info for fishing on most lakes in NW Montana if you have questions and I know some rivers here as well.

well I really appreciate the info.......are you hunting Mule or whitetail?  Fishing I will be asking you more especially up that way for the second part of my vacation....I will be in the glacier area the second week of August.  Type of hunting for me is definately elk and or deer no bear.....makes me to nervous and I will be going alone on either one of these hunts (spouse doesnt go at all) so it will be some state land I am sure.  I will let you know what I find out.  thanks again

I hunt white tail although we have both here I try not to shoot mule deer. We have plenty I just don't like what they taste like, which is entirely personal prefernce my cousin up in Eureka is the exact opposite he only shoots mulie bucks and much prefers the taste of them to white tail, so it is entirely subjective.

Seeley Swan area has the best white tail hunting I have ever had big bucks wise although up here near the MT / Idaho border can be decent too. Most Plum Creek property(they are a timber company) is open for walk in hunting out here too so it doesn't have to be public land you hunt. We also have block management programs for hunting private lands in many areas that is worth checking out. I have a buddy down near Superior who shot a really big rifle buck last year on some block management property.

If you do decide to bear hunt you have to pass the bear identifying test deal online so they know you aren't going to shoot a grizzly on accident, although how people ever get the two confused is a mystery to me, black bears don't look or move anything like a grizzly does.

Always get your wolf tag too, you may never see one but if you do you don't want to not have a tag in hand to be able to take one should you see it. We have some wolves here around where I live but the forest here is not conducive to them being able to hunt well so there are more of them west and north of here. I am still waiting to get my first one. My kids want the skin for their room wall so I have been trying but so far haven't been able to close the deal yet.

I would love to get a wolf...that would be just awesome....seeing one would be fantastic but I would rather cu down on the population if I could...I will remember to file for my wolf definitely.  See you also new more about public hunting and that is real informative.  thanks for that info.  I am checking  into the Plum Creek thing as we speak .. thanks for all the great information.  I dont have any idea how mule tastes....hopefully not a jack ass (laughing) and whitetail tastes just fine.....Good Luck on your wolf so you can get one for your kids..   sounds like fun

Berry season they are on the move all over the forest right now looking for berries and it is dry so they are moving a lot to find good forage because the berries are scarcer this year than normal because of how hot and dry it has been. At least that is how it is over here in Sanders county right now.

The Huckleberry Festival in Trout Creek goes this weekend though if anyone is looking for some small town fun in the area :)
