Title: 2022 season
Post by: fish/hunt4ever on Sep 11, 2022, 08:44:03 PM
Finally made it to the mountain and cut some trails out to better access some areas and help the wildlife movement. Seen the forest service marking some new timber sales, nice to see the activity before just fighting the forest fires, wish they would open some of the roads back up and stop closing things down so much. They talked about some new ATV trails that would be nice to spread people out as well. Seen the forest service on one closed road good thing the wife stayed at the truck and could move it for them so they could get out from behind the gate, or they could have gone back around and down the other road they closed, oh wait that one they tore out boulders and such to close that side of the road. Seen a bull elk and some deer nice to be seeing animals again.

How is the Elk & the Mule Deer population
Title: Re: 2022 season

On that bull that we seen that day around a 300 class bull, been forgetting to get on and post for the last bit. The elk population had been great for the last few years, but you have to stay in the areas away from the wolves, the bears are bad in some places, just widh they would get the season going for them to.put the fear of humans back into them. The mule deer are coming back but it depends on the area for how well they are doing and what you can find around for bucks, the whitetail population seems to be doing good for the most part around where I am at and hunt but they are expanding more with the decline in mule deer but hopefully the mule deer will rebound with some habitat projects they are working on and some burning of sage brush communities that are too tall and overgrown to let feed grow or animals in, and some clear cutting of the forests will help.

But he said he has seen some good ones at times just the biggest one has been crossing to the other area and not coming back to his area very often.

Went out and scouted for some Sandhill cranes seen about 500 last night so might be a good opening day next Saturday, might have some pictures of a couple down. Then off to elk camp.

They taste just like morning dove, you just do not have to have 30 of them yo feed a couple people. They are a dark meat and the wife and kids really like it, especially when mixed with sausage and stuffing and baked together.

Well tried to fill the crane tags, but no luck so far, missed a few, next will be elk hunting as the mountain got 6 to 10 inches of snow.  Packing tonight headed out after work tomorrow for a few days.

Well one week of elk hunting in the books and only 1 elk to show for it. Did take the rifle on several walks in the woods. Now to get to see about the end of the month week with my brother and his horses. Here is the daughter with her elk, we found some and had cows and calves at 20 yards just not any legal ones the wife and I could shoot and the other daughter who could shoot any was not around when the elk were there.

Well after having to go to work instead of cutting up the elk, went out and got our cranes last night.

Could have shot way more as more and more flew in, seen probably over 200 birds last night and we can only take one on each tag here.

We like them, I think of morning dove when I cut them up and cook them just a lot bigger and do not need as many to feed a few people. I know some call them ribeye of the sky. We had our neighbors over and cooked one up the way we do with stuffing and cooked sausage and mix together and then add the crane and bake for about 30 minutes and then eat. We had mashed potatoes with gravey and corn/greenbeans for the meal.

Yep told the wife if I do not get excited over seeing things or feeling bummed about a bad hit that I should probably not be doing this anymore. Pheasant season opened today so might have to dust the shotgun off again and chase some around. Need to cut up meat though and ice fishing is just around the corner.

Post by: fish/hunt4ever on Nov 26, 2022, 03:34:31 PM
Was hoping to have some pheasants pictures but I missed the one close enough to shoot then I have only seen a couple other legal ones at a distance. Then switched over to ice fishing a couple days and now snowing out so maybe one last pheasant hunt before going back to work.

Title: Re: 2022 season
Post by: fish/hunt4ever on Dec 14, 2022, 08:40:23 PM
The population is not as good as last year in the area but habe seen 11 so far in the trips I have taken, usually see one a trip and seen a couple on places I cannot hunt. The game and fish release pheasants around one of the lakes a few miles away but the pheasants I hunt are some wild ones that have been on the rebounds for several years.
