Deerslayer...RE; 1917 REM

Well what you've got there is most likely the venerable United States Rifle, Caliber 30, M1917

For further information I suggest
M1917

I am by no means an authority on military firearms but have worked on many, many of these fine guns.

As to value...it's very subjective  and depends totally on condition, manufacture venue, originality and who's looking to buy it.

Can you post some pics?

Why are you selling it? Where did you get it from?
Ever shoot it?

Cider,
Fine work indeed and a treasure for you as well.... 7mm-08 would not be an unusual round for a wildcatter of that vintage.

Deerslayer,
If your firearm is in good condition...clean bore, good headspace etc...there's no reason it couldn't be fired. If it is unfired it would be very rare and certainly shouldn't be used at all.

Matching serial #'s are a very good thing and valued by collectors.

It's history is known and adds to the value as well...especially to you personally. Hang on to it...it's a family heirloom if nothing else.

I'm definately no expert, but I've seen  a lot of these rifles too. There's quite a few P-17 and P-14  rifles kicking around Canada in 30.06.   I always thought they were made by Enfield and Remington to make up a shortfall in Springfield production in WW1 rather than being standard issue. As well, during wartime lots of manufacturers were recruited to re-tool and make firearms for the duration, ie; the Inglis washing machine company made Browning Hi-Power 9mm pistols in WW2.  For info on Springfields, the best source I've found is something called Hatcher's Notebook.  I think he was chief armourer for the U.S. army in the old days.   It seemed to have a record of every production run, modifacation, and every accident that ever happened with one on an American military firing range. I was able to date my A-1 from the serial# using that book.  The P-17 (as we call it here) is known to be a good, accurate shooter.
