Title: Story from the way back
Post by: slt on Nov 09, 2011, 07:20:56 PM
I have decided that this deer season I am going to hunt with an old 30-30 (MGF 1899) purchased new by my great-great uncle Frank. My grandfather told this story many times and I though of it again while hunting today. I was having one of those daydram moments in the woods today thinking about the family history associated with the old Winchester I was carrying and my grandfathers story of the greatest shot he ever saw. My grandfather was in his teens so that would make it  sometime in the mid 1930's. My great-great uncle lived on the farm where I now live. My grandfather and his father had arrived for a day of hunting. As they were in the yard planning their hunt my grandfather saw a deer in the far corner of "the meadow" and pointed it out to the party. From the yard, specifically, under the big box elder tree to the far corner of the meadow is at least 350 yards and probably closer to 400....it's quite a distance. According to my grandfather, Uncle Frank stood under the box elder and using nothing but iron sights and windage took a shot at the deer which lept up in the air and crashed to the ground. My grandfather looked and Frank and stated the obvious " You hit that deer!". Frank responded like a typical Mainer " What the hell did you think I was trying to do?"  Makes me smile every time I think of it....

slt, I love the story. I also grew up with the 30/30 Win. got away from it and got into archery and scoped rifles. The last few years a few friends and I decided to go back to the lever guns. Here is a buck I took a few years back with the old 30/30 win. One of my longest shots in the timber I have ever pulled off with open sights, piled him up like a sack of you know what. Only about 150 yards.
