In the potential market for a semi auto small calibre varmint rifle. I have a .243 and am getting a 22-250 but both are single shot for my cva. Would like a quick second or more shot. Any suggestions? My dad thinks a RIM fire semi needs tons of constant cleaning. Thanks for the info

I think some kind of AR style rifle would be good.

Are .17's good for yotes?

.17 HMR are plenty for yotes. I kill most of mine with a rimfire tube mag semi auto marlin .22 Lr . I have never cleaned it once in 12 years and it never jams. I think it was like 100 bucks brand new.

.17 is quite a little bullet.
-
Thanks now if you could lend me 1400$ that marlin just a regular lr are .17 rimfire
-
not sure if this was a ? for me or not..... My marlin is a .22 Lr it was only 100 bucks , my buddy has a .17 HMR savage and its a pretty sweet round. I think his was like 500

The new AR platform by Remington is around A grand I think. Yes the .17 is rimfire. My son has one that's a bolt action Marlin with a heavy target barrel. The things a tack driver.
-
Ya I can't justify spending that much on a gun anytime soon, I was reading up on the .17 and it seems although they are accurate unless you hit a yote perfect is going to run a ways. Maybe just a .22 mag, not many semi though.. 10/22lr is nice too.... hmm I'm tying to stick rimfire because in southern tier/Western ny you can only use rimfire of shotgun during deer season and I would like the option of taking it any where

Why not a bolt? I've got a CZ452 in .17HMR that cost me $600 about six years ago, and that was including glass, bipod, and sling.
-
I'd definitely go with a .223 due to the inexpensive ammunition. I was given a .222 and after a couple years gave it to my uncle because it cost an arm and a leg to shoot the thing.
-
You can pick up a decent 22lr semi pretty cheap. Watch for sales at DicksSportingGoods, WallyWorld and those types of places.
-
If you're going with a .22 I'd recommend the Ruger 10/22. There are a lot of after market accessories available for this model.

I picked up my Marlin 17hmr at Oldtown Trading Post last year brand new for $250.I love it.Has the heavy barrel also.

i have a marlin bolt .22mag w/ a 4x bushnell scope. i can consistantly hit a 3in. target at 200yrds from a bench. i sighted it at 50yrds and i hold at the top of the target at 200 and its right in the pickle barrel. havent tried it on dogs but got a rabbit at 160 yrds off the hood of my truck before. paid like $90 for it . $25 for the scope and rings. very short bolt throw so its quick w/ a follow up shot. its cheap and fun to shoot at the range. if you hunt in real cold conditions semis tend to jam if not kept real clean w/ minimum oil on the bolt. for that reason a bolt, lever, or pump actions are better and rarely if ever jam.

I would not recomend a .17 for yotes. I bought one a few years ago and am pretty sure unless shooting the full metal jackets in it I would have to take up a blood trail to recover a red squirrel! ;D A .22 would probably do the job if the dog was close and hit right! Your best option may be to stick with the.243 and just start reloading to save a few dollars!

Think I'm going 22 mag bolt with a decent scope
-
How much those ruger mini run?
-
about $400 more than my marlin!
-
Ya I am a fan of my marlin lr prob stick with that
-
They are $881 and up.
I love my Ruger's
-
Ya ruger is great, just don't have the means to get one now, in the future I'll prob get a .204 or .220, I think I saw a .216 or something some where to.
-
Ruger's bring back great memories from my childhood, in all my memories I can picture the old Ruger 77 rifles with the metal bracket around the end of the stock to barrel, with the top tang safety , the red recoil pads and the god awful heavy pulling triggers, left handed bolts, parts made in NH man I love them things.
Now they have a nice breaking LC6 trigger and no metal bracket but I hate the new Safety's on some of mine 3 point system now >:(. Oh well I will never lose loyalty to them.

my buddies a big dog hunter. hes got a m77 ruger ultra light stainless synthetic in 22-250. man is that a flat shooting gun! hes got a 6-24x nikon on there. hes taken dogs at 600+ yrds. w/ that thing. not cheap money wise and a little overkill i find but i dont think they make a flatter shooting round than that 22-250 and would be worth it if you got into it in a big way.
