.300 win mag ammo question
« on: Oct 08, 2013, 08:52:53 AM »
I am getting a .300 win mag. I was thinking about a savage. What will be the best bullets that could shoot over 400 yds?

If memory serves me right, and this is just an FYI....you will have to shoot only 300 Savage ammo through that gun which might hinder availability/convenience of that ammo unless you reload your own?

Not the case, savage makes rifles in both calibers.  .300 win. Mag and also a 300 savage. Both completely different casingS. A 300 savage is a short action round with  less power than a .308 win. Where as the 300 win. Mag is a long action magnum and  has more power than a 30/06

I own a ruger 77 in 300 wm .Its by far my favorite deer ,moose rifle. I shoot a lot of 200- 300 yard shots and the 165/168 grn bullet weight is great. However my favorite all round load is 180 grn accubond. With that being said I load all my own rounds so the loads are Taylor made for my gun.Try to stick with a good bullet like nosler accubond, trophy bonded bear claw, swift a frame, barnes when finding a good load/bullet combo.Zero the scope at 200 yds and anything from 20 yds to 250 yds is good with a 6" drop .
