Title: Grouse Hunting
Post by: SHaRPS on Jul 27, 2015, 09:55:07 AM
Does anyone know of a good place to go grouse/woodcock hunting in New England (guided or not)? I am from RI and wouldn't mind traveling 5-6 hours if need be. With my new GSP puppy, I would love to hunt some wild birds and not just stocked pheasant. Its one thing I regret not doing with my previous GSP. I have hunted northern NH and there were birds, but nothing spectacular. I am thinking possibly ME for a long weekend? Any help would be great.

Anyone on here heading up to the great north woods of NH for some upland bird hunting?

Almost anywhere north of Bangor, Maine is good grouse hunting.

Thanks Mainduckhunter. Its official. Cabin is rented and I am hoping the 6 hour ride will be worth it with the new GSP pup. If anyone is willing to PM me with some advice that would be more than awesome! I am sure someone else is going to be in the Pittsburg area.

You going to Pittsburg, Maine or New Hampshire?

Now that I look at a map, I'm assuming New Hampshire. Good Luck man!! You'd probably have good luck crossing the border too into Maine!!   :D

Yep, NH. I am definitely excited. I have not been up there for 10 years now so I am definitely looking forward to it. I did some homework on google maps so I think I might get lucky and find some birds. Terrain is so different up there than what I am used to in RI. We shall see I guess.

Thanks Green Mountain. I have dug up as much info as I possibly could about the area. Looked at maps and I think I have an idea of where the birds might be. I figure if I don't find any birds in 30 minutes I will move to a new spot. Hopefully I will have some pictures to post.

And here is my boy at 10 weeks, 5 months, and now 11 months old. I think he's ready to do some damage. Jaeger will be turning 1 year on our trip so I am definitely excited.

Then back at home we also did some damage. Both hunting with family and I guided a bit.

I am jealous Gasblaster. We no longer have any grouse here in RI and that species has actually been closed to hunting for a few years now. The only wild birds that we get are doves and woodcock. Speaking of woodcock, we have seen 6 in 2 trips which is more than we have seen in the last 10 years. Maybe just luck but I am thinking there is a huge movement of them right now and they are all here in RI. Got them at both ends of the state as well.

On the bright side, we did well this weekend and my yearly stash of "chicken" is secured. Just wish i had some grouse. lol

Good luck and have fun up there GMH.

I was lucky enough to get a babysitter yesterday and was able to tag this 105 lb dressed doe. Clean shot with the .50 through both lungs. She was still able to go up a steep cliff about 50 yards before expiring. Now I need to fill my buck tag.
